Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

I agree with your shaking canonista fist:
K
  • TOS and the TOS Movies are ~300 years in the future. (Unfortunately, TWOK and Space Seed both conflict with this assumption with the "two centuries" remarks in both suggesting it is ~230 years in the future...<shakes canonista fist, again.>)
  • :vulcan:
The moment they say 200 years is in the 21 c Kahn timeline

Kirk and Sam were basically Military brats growing up and ended up following in Dad's footsteps. I bet George being sent place to place didn't help his marriage to Winona.
It's also probably the reason Sam left Starfleet and settled on safe and peaceful Deneva, "one of the most beautiful in the galaxy", so he could be with Aurelan and raise their three sons. Shame he didn't get transferred to Earth colony two research station like he wanted. :shifty::)

I'll say this seeing this Young Kirk has me wonder what he was like even during his Starfleet Academy days. I mean this doesn't seem like the same Kirk who would allow Finnegan to bully him around. Also it also makes me hope they do a SNW novel about his even earlier days on the Farragut.

One might even say that being bullied cause Kirk to have to make some changes. Possibly even grow a little bit to deal with it.

Or he just got out of his misspent youth in his 20s and figured out what he wanted in life.

And many people just don't "let" someone bully them. They're just bullied and deal with it as best they can, and Kirk seems like the kind of Cadet who'd despise every minute of it but wouldn't launch into a bare knuckles fistfight with Finnegan because he'd come up with more clever and cleaner ways of outwitting Finnegan that wouldn't reflect poorly on his own behavioral record, resorting to physical reprisal only if he felt he had no other choice.

I got the impression Kirk didn't let Finnegan bully him per se; they fought each other all the time, it was just that Finnegan always won those fights. And that's actually not out of character for Kirk because there were a couple of times he fought a Starfleet captain with more hand-to-hand experience, and lost. One example of this was when he fought Captain Ron Tracy in TOS S2 The Omega Glory.

I believe Kirk once said that if he even laid a finger on Finnegan in retaliation, he (Kirk) would be kicked out of the Academy.

Which kinda begs the question, are cadets really supposed to put up with this shit? Kirk just has to let Finnegan bully him, day after day, and not be able to do anything about it? That's a recipe for disaster right there.

Nope - that was never stated by Kirk in TOS S1 Shore Leave, not once.

However, the version of Finnegan Kirk remembered and the Planet created said:

FINNEGAN: Won't you ever learn, Jim boy? You never could take me, you know.

I like the way Wesley's Kirk is written, much moreso than the way they generally write Nu Pike.

I felt like this scene was throwing shade at Nu Pike's empty flowery dialogue, when Kirk goes straight to the point.

I'm not keen on Wesley's performance, but they've written an effective Captain here.

Captain Stubing proved if you have the Doc and Isaac to keep things running smoothly you can helm a career that lasts close to a decade and be lauded for how good you were.

Mount is easily the best casting of the Nu Trek era. He was fantastic on Hell on Wheels. He's the reason the Pike spinoff even exists.

However, he is better than the mediocre material that they tend to give him. Boyscout Pike was necessary for Discovery when he was commanding an unconventional crew of misfits and emotionally unstable individuals.

On SNW, he could be a far more compelling lead if they allow him to do scenes with more dramatic weight on a regular basis. He's been far too passive for S2.

Either way, I like the way Nu Kirk is written. This scene for example. He doesn't take a laid back approach with Laan. He confronts her. He's direct with her about the situation. Even walking up to her and trying to grab the device out of her hands.

Tbh this was one of the dumbest scenes in streaming Trek.

Have the strange woman with the alien device in your quarter, without security officers, without check-up, then pick a confrontation while alone with her and try to grab her future alien device.

The literal definition of giving someone the Idiot Ball to make a plot happen.
