It never seemed to sit right with me. I think Harry should have been the one the script writers chose...
It's all about openning up new ideas for future stories.I just thought it was odd that out of the entire crew Paris was the best qualified and no one else could have done it.
That means that anyone from either crew with those skills must have been killed, there were numerous science personel on Voyager for example. Did no one except for their best pilot have any know how which could have let them play nurse?
Good looking and subservient? But Kes was the quintessential nurse!

I guess that's why too me Kes didn't seem to fit Voyager. Janeway & Be'Lanna(and Seven) didn't need a man to validate them. They were independant and self reliant. Kes couldn't seem to function unless she was attached to a man or looking up to one to give her purpose.
I would have just kept Kes in the first place.

She tapped into her mental power because two men(Tuvok & Tannis) encouraged her too. She admitted her exploring made her reckless and got her into trouble and with the Kazon it nearly got her dead.Good looking and subservient? But Kes was the quintessential nurse!

And don;t under estimate Kes. She did quite a bit of exploring on her homeworld alone; took on her 'leaders' and challenged them to find the truth of the care taker; survived a nasty Kazon leader who beat her when he was drunk; and tapped into her races mental abilities which had been dormant for generations.
I would say Kes is quite able to function without any telling her what to do. Just because she loves the Dr for his brains and Neelix for his heart doesn't mean she is weak.
i guess that was one good thing about "Fury." Providing Kes was somehow able to return to Ocampa, she would be a good leader in teaching her people the forgotten ways of pWnz0ring people with your brain

Sorry, I just don't see Kes as an example of the progressive modern woman image that Voyager was putting forth
I don't agree, it was clear by the events in "The Gift" & "Fury" that being on Voyager ruined her life because she didn't have the understanding to avoid things that would do her harm. Once again as she said: her curious nature would get her into trouble. She missed oppertunities of having a normal life and any chance at ever having a family of her own because she allowed herself to follow behind others that knew nothing of her or her kind. Her own people warned her not to leave Ocampia and look what became of her.
