Pan Am...did anyone watch?

American Horror Story is fun, too. 
But I wouldn't call it "good" like Pan Am is good.

So, don't know if anyone watched Sunday's episode, but it was pretty good overall. That is, right up until the end where they had the plane land during a crosswind. I don't know what happened, and I still don't. The whole CGI sequence looked to be accelerated, with the plane coming down way too fast, stopping quickly, and then turning into a different direction. Made my heart sink.
And probably won't get time to. Pan Am is consistently dropping in the ratings.
I've liked every episode so far. I'm very sorry to hear it's not doing well.
If there had been an accident the pilot would have been crucified and rightly so - that was a bad call.
The episode did touch on things that that people here commented on about after the first ep - the comparitive youth of the pilot but no doubt at the time there was probably some agrievement with the up and comers playing second fiddle to the WWII vets who in probably weren't much older.
Another strong episode, good development for Ted (the actor is quite good). Wish the ratings were better. 
My interpretation is that the pilot guessed he would be skillful enough to compensate for the crosswind at the last minute and bring the plane in for a safe landing. The plan was going badly off course then suddenly veered on course and touched down lightly as though the landing had been routine. It's ambiguous whether he was right or lucky.

That landing should have been waved off in that weather, and today it probably would have been without a second thought. I do hope they won't make too much a habit of the "hotshot pilot" motif as it robs authenticity from the show, though in this case it did serve the story.
Still, it was fun to watch - the approach to the old Kai Tak was CRAZY, involving a low approach and sharp turn over residential high rises (really, REALLY low!) before a landing on an artifical peninsula that dumps straight into the bay. Watching this episode really brought back how freaked out I was during my one landing there. Observe:

Oh, it wasn't so much an in-universe concern, but rather from a technical standpoint, though I guess they do intersect in a way. The FX for that scene were just laughably bad. I knew from the start that accuracy wouldn't be a cornerstone, but come on, it's as if they just gave up. Like they ran out of time to do the scene properly and sped it up.
Adding insult to injury is when the other pilot was complaining that he could have done it. Ouch. Not the proudest moment of the show.
But otherwise, I do hope Pan-Am continues. I do enjoy watching it.
Wow, did they use that as reference for the sequence, because that looks exactly like what happened on the show!
And yeah, the FX was bad, but yknow what, I just ignore bad FX on TV. I appreciate when they make the attempt to have a show that even needs FX instead of just doing another cop show or another sitcom, and I know they don't have movie budgets. If it's as good as Lost, then fine. (As bad as it sometimes got on V, tho - ugh! - even I have my limits.)
Can remember my grandparents talking about their flight into Hong Kong coming down between the buildings.
Good thing for the flight crew of the Clipper "Majestic" there weren't the buildings around went up in later years.
Yeah, you're probably right. I shouldn't focus on it so much. Because aside from that, it was great. Favourite new series this season.

Ooo, maybe they're getting a full season pickup! I hope so, this is the one new show that I think deserves a chance to find its footing. Maybe Once Upon a Time can start funneling viewers over. Despite the widely divergent topics, the two shows have a similar sort of vibe to them.
have to admit I found last nights a bit tedious and skipped most of it - whathername going over New York about the ring just didn't interest me.
Ever the set dressers need to be a bit more research or in 1963 aircraft were very tidy even after long haul flights. These days the plane is mess after everyone gets off (though admittely a long haul you could have 3 times as many people as fitted aboard a 707) but the Clipper is all nice and neat before and no cleaners coming on board
Also watching Once Upon A Time.
This was the weakest episode so far for me, but nothing to make the show drop off my radar (ha ha).
But Once Upon a Time? It could be Shakespeare for the modern age and I wouldn't care; I'm booked solid TYVM.

Re: clean planes, there are more than a few discrepencies. The most glaring seems to be that on the 707s, the lounge was at the very front of the plane and not sandwiched in between the two cabins, where any hillbilly in coach could use it. I'm guessing that they did this specifcally to open up the plane and allow more dynamic scenes for the crew and passengers no matter where they were seated on the plane.
Also, the whole plane should have had a haze in it from everyone smoking, and the stewardesses would have been handing out cigarettes before and during the flight... I wonder if the air crew got smoke breaks as well?

I would think that they'd end the first year of the show (I hope they get picked up for a full season!) with Kennedy's assassination in November... They're somewhere in spring-summer of '63 right now so they're on track for it. Also:

And morbid as it is, it's also a great way to dramatically remove a character or two if they end up not working out or not wanting to continue with the show.

Ohh, I hope so too! I hope they know some of us are watching!
I do feel it's one of the stronger new series. And Mark, that's quite interesting. Considering they've already touched on Kennedy in the Berlin episode, maybe they'll follow it up, considering at least one of them is a big fan of him. As for the crash, didn't we see a scene with one of the pilots on trial related to a crash? I can't quite remember if that was relating to a past event that had already happened or not. Could it be related to that, you think?
