Our Man Bashir; any fans?

Absolutely.

Actually...it's too bad Eon didn't like the emulation of the Bond films. They REALLY should have shown a lot more of this holo-program.

What I wouldn't give to see the program in Season 7. You wouldn't believe how much I've wondered what sort of character Ezri would play....

(Shame--the only reference in that season was when Leeta dissed it. Sheesh--Julian, I can see why you left her....)

But anyhow...it was an excellent emulation of the Bond franchise--from "Bashir--Julian Bashir", to the Beautiful Russian Agent, to Dr. Noah (who's dressed like Dr. No), to the over-the-top world-destruction scheme a la "The Spy Who Loved Me", to Bashir/Bond's charm turning the female henchman against the villain.

There's also a referece to The Avengers (using a champagne bottle cork to knock out Falcon).

I've got to say, as much as I enjoyed Julian Bashir as a secret agent with Garak as his side-kick (and the fact that Alexander Siddig got to make out with his real love at the time, Nana Visitor as Kira and Kernel Comona-whatever), I absolutely LOVED Avery Brook's Hippocratos Noah. If ever there was a time to be over the top and hammy, that was it, and Avery Brooks did it to perfection. Actually, I think all the actors must have had a blast getting to try something different and play these campy, 60's-era characters. Holodeck episodes on Trek have always had the potential to fall horribly flat (see everything "Fair Haven"-related on Voyager), but this one was great!

Excellent episode. One of my favorites, especially the way Julian stops the program by killing everyone on Earth, sort of. And when he shot Garak. Man, Garak had some great lines.

"If I were you I'd grab a bottle of champagne and shoot me."

"I think I joined the wrong intelligence service!"

I liked it, mainly for Garak's role in it.

I wonder if MGM threatened to sue Paramount, given how opposed they are to Bond homages or spoofs. I'd bet they'd kill for it now, given the limbo the series is in.

I enjoyed 'Our Man Bashir', but I disagree that it would have been nice to see more of the James Bond parody. I think that was fun for one episode, and they did it perfectly, if they went back and did another one it wouldnt have been nearly as good. The main drama of the episode came from the interaction with Garak and Bashir about whether it was time to simply save themselves and let everyone else die. The episode became a story questioning such over-the-top heroics, contrasting Julian's fantasy of spying and Garak's actual experience of it. This isnt something that could have been easily replicated without simply doing the same kind of thing, I think it was nice where they did that one fun/silly show and then moved on. Less is more.

Perhaps...but I'd have loved some more references later on--such as Julian and Ezri coming down from the holosuite, him in the tux, her in a sparkling evening dress, and they discuss the "mission" briefly at the bar (vodka marinis--shaken, not stirred ).

mmm, sparkling dress...

BTW--and this is just for insight--how many of you all have listened to the soundtrack of the pre-credits sequence of Diamonds Are Forever, and were struck with how well the music for the first minute-and-half fits with the pre-credits sequence of "Our Man Bashir"?

(Think: A Bashir Gunbarrel, followed by a quiet shot of the glass wall, just before Falcon smashes through, and so on):

I also am saddened by the lack of Ezri in a fancy dress, and an S7 Bond parody venture would've been a good way to have it happen. Oh well.

But this one is great fun, and one of my favorites. The premise itself is much more bearable too since it's an unusual situation and not just the TNG favorite of "The holodeck is gonna kill everybody! Again!" Any episode where Garak has a large part is a blast, though.

Perhaps with some elements of The Avengers, Ezri as a female agent who assists Bond/Bashir amid a charming, witty interaction....

I'm not a fan. It's a waste of an episode slot. The episode has no meaning, and much of the acting is horrendous, especially from Brooks. I don't know why meaningless episodes such as this are often popular. Would it not be better instead to have made an episode that has something to say?
