Original Series Theme - My Version

His earlier works on video games (Lost World, Secret Weapons over Normandy) show a greater kinship with John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith than Bear McCreary

Yes, I know his influences. I'm not suggesting it'll be McCreary-ish in any structural sense, just a hunch about its possible militaristic roots. I'm completely guessing. Wouldn't surprise me to find out I was completely off target. In the end, he'll do whatever Abrams wants, of course! :)

I posted this on another forum and was recommended to post here - a touch obnoxious for a first post, I think, but I think you guys will enjoy it...

On a recent visit to ILM, I saw Star Trek 11 being worked on. With all the original characters being seen as young and fresh out of the academy, I wondered if it was possible to re-imagine the original series' "club lounge," dated-sounding theme for a modern palette - while remaining youthful, energized, and giving a nod to the great Star Trek music legacy.

Here's my take on it:

Star Trek Theme

Anyway, enjoy... cool forum!

That's totally awesome. You should be doing the score.

Very very very good! I would love to hear that performed by a full orchestra :techman:

And welcome on TrekBBS ;)

Yes, indeed Michael Giacchino will be scoring ST11, and while he is apparently planning on using the original theme as I did, I doubt VERY highly it will have anything like the "earnest" take on it as I did. I'd sooner be expecting a very dark, percussion(dare I say BSG?)-ish take on it. I thought about doing one of those - sort of a dark militaristic, sexy version - but one of my goals here was to make a version that felt like it was part of the legacy of themes from the movies, Voyager, and DS9. It's actually a very tricky melody to work with...

Well, after hearing your take I'm almost willing to say, "It's our loss" even though Giacchino's one of my favorite new composers. Any time you get bored, I doubt there's a member of these boards who wouldn't love to hear your take on some of the other incidental pieces scattered throughout the original series.

I'm a fan of movie music (and recently game soundtracks, too), and I've added your website to my short bookmark list to keep an eye on. I'm looking forward to following your career.

You also might want to go to this message in another thread that's been discussing your work and pick up a sombrero avatar someone made up for you. Don't ask about the sombreros ... I made that mistake and wound up wading through a single thread that had over fifty pages of posts. Just kinda smile when talk about sombreros comes up and back away without making any sudden moves.

Obnoxious ???!!?? OBNOXIOUS ?!?!?!?!?!?!!??????

Lord, what a gift !! Thank you.

Can I use it on my web page? It would add a unique touch !!

Well, you know what I mean...

Anyway, thanks and yes you can use it on your site. Just credit it somewhere.

That theme would be perfect for a new series set in a time between Kirk and Picard's era.

Ahhh. I can see it now. Star Trek: Zhang Heng, the adventures of Lt. Commander S'kai, Score by Mike Verta, Produced by TrekBBS, Directed by William Shatner . . .

Never mind.

Okay, this should upset a few of you pretty good...

A few months back, when I did the original version of this theme (Post #1), I figured it was probably not going to be representative of the actual flavor of Abrams' Trek. Well, having seen those 20 minutes of preview clips now, I'd say that's definitely the case.

Love it or hate what you've seen, last night I decided to do, basically, an opposite version of the theme from what I did before. This version sounds like Abrams footage looks, to me. If that makes sense.

So without further ado: Star Trek Theme v2 - The "Hollywood Hack" Edition I don't expect you to like it anymore than I do, but then again, I don't like the "Cosmetics counter at Macy's" look of the new Starship Apple Store, either. So here is a pre-judgmental, drum-laden take on a love ballad for a space boat.

This is incredible stuff..how are you doing this? Do you have a full orchestra at your disposal?? This is a great version and I bow to your greatness!!!!

Rob

Very nice. But I have to say it's too busy. The main theme gets lost in there too many times. It's a tad over-orchestrated for such a short piece.

Thanks :) Nah, it's just virtual, done on my home studio...

_Mike

You say its virtual? And you said earlier you record each instrument piece by piece....how many tracks are you doing? And how long does it actually take? I am really interested in the craft and your 'material' is very epic...not the old BAND IN THE BOX I am accustomed to hearing !!!

Rob

Well, strictly speaking it begins first on paper, on scorepad in pencil. I compose and orchestrate there, first, and then play each part into my sequencer (Digital Performer) which is triggering 5 Gigastudio PC's worth of samples, and a few Kontakt plug-ins running in Performer. I have a track for each instrument, each articulation. So I have Solo Flute, Flutes, Staccato Flutes, Flute Trills, etc, for each section. Quite a lot in all, especially because of the percussion section.

It takes a while to get the performances right, but I've also been doing it a long time, so I'd say in the end this piece was written and performed inside of 12 hours or so.
