George R.R. Martin. He wrote some novels that served as the basis for HBO's Game Of Thrones series.

Didn't he say something similar on the Inside Star Trek album?

That was based on his 1976 lectures, long before TMP or ST II. I don't recall him talking too much in that about new actors playing Kirk and Spock, although not long after these lectures Paramount was assuming that the first/only Trek movie might attract the calibre of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, fairly fresh from "The Sting".

I really don't like Orci or Kurtzman at all. In terms of all the films they have written they have done a poor job. What saves Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness from being forgettable entries to the franchise has to do with the acting, cinematography, visual effects, soundtrack, and sound design. Orci and Kurtzman has contributed nothing to Star Trek other than glaring plot issues and poor characterizations.

I'm glad Orci and Kurtzman are out of the picture, but I still do not have high hopes for Star Trek: Beyond as of yet. Let's just say I still do not have a lot of faith in the writing department, specifically regarding Simon Pegg.

Add to that his participation in the "burn the Hugos in order to save it" BS at this years WorldCon, and you get the jack-a-nape trifecta

Yeah, if this is a reference to his quite effective opposition to the Sad Puppies' attempt to turn the Hugos into a joke spectacle of radical right-wing nonsense, it sure isn't Martin who's being the "jack-a-nape" for my money.

I get that his non-fannishness about NuTrek is going to freak some people on this forum out but Out In the World it's not that uncommon (especially among people who write for a profession) so let's try to keep a grip.

I don't know for sure, but we are apparently still waiting on him to release his review of Star Trek: Into Darkness. He says it is 'almost finished.'

Now that's funny.

I should add, BTW, that Martin produced an incredibly in-depth, perceptive and fair-minded overview of the whole Sad Puppies debacle on his blog. Oddly fair-minded for someone who's supposed to be "a dick to anyone who disagrees with him," but such are the multifarious conundra of human existence. Very informative about the Hugos generally and his own take on the controversy specifically.

His posts about it can be found here, here, here, here, here, here (of particular interest for those who mistakenly believe he advocated that people vote "NO AWARD" across the board, which is false), and here. And also here, and here, and I'm sure there's more besides but basically those entries are the sum total of why I regard anyone who says Martin's stance on Puppygate is somehow unfair or unreasonable as being a bit nuts. He was a steady voice of sanity, reality, good will and professionalism through basically the entire episode.

Political game of thrones at the Hugos (small pun intended) at WorldCon this year. My uncle was one of the sergeant-at-arms for WorldCon and part of making sure discussions were civil.
