IRL girls (and gay men) never think I'm gay, despite having a large number of traits stereotypically (fairly or unfairly) associated with being gay. Liking clothes & dressing nicely, going shopping, being a bit prissy/fussy in a variety of ways, being slightly bitchy, etc, etc. I think it's because I'm a pretty incorrigible flirt, so that cancels the above out in their mental pattern recognition processes.

That and the fact that (clothes-aside) I don't look effeminate. Occasionally I know straight guys who weren't sure about my orientation at first, but they rapidly figure out I'm straight after they get to know me.

Given the way you act? What, do you make out with women everywhere you go or something? How are people supposed to automatically know that you're straight when they first meet you?

After I helped organize a wedding ceremony at the 2003 Worldcon for four gay couples, one of the couples went over to Church Street and came back with a t-shirt for me that says:

I'M NOT GAY

I'm openly straight, though I have been hit on by a lot of guys, unfortunately. I think it's because I have a 'soft face', due to my mixed race heritage. About 15 years ago a guy actually yelled from across the street if I wanted a BJ.
