Open Speculation about "Star Trek: Picard"

Whatever is going on between the Romulans and The Borg, it would be nice to have the Cardiassians under Gul Ducat involved somehow in the background trying to keep the Romulan empire as a going concern. He'd be at least an Legate (Admiral) by now.

Gul Dukat is still with the Pah-Wraiths, the same as Sisko with the Prophets inside the wormhole. Of course the show runners could have created a plot where both are released into the world again, but IMO that would've been too much of a distraction from the main plotline.

The Cardassian Supreme Leader in 'Picard' time is likely going to be the simple tailor Elim Garak. Perhaps assisted by Gul Madred as Head of the Obsidian Order.

Yeah, I find a lot of the negative comments about too much past on Picard perplexing. One, TNG is my fav. But I get YMMV so OK.

But you have to explain how he got from where he was (Captain) to where he is now (retired on a farm). AND explain why he reverses course and gets back in the game. And you have to do it in a way that is interesting enough (character wise) to get Stewart to come back.

Both the reason for leaving & the reason for coming back are gonna be tied to his past in some way. Which is going to involve people from his past. Has too.

The most impactful events & relationships for JLP, are, in my view:

1. Stargazer/Beverly.
2. Tasha's death
3. Q
4. Borg transformation
5. Guinan
6. Relationship to Klingon Empire
7. Inner Light experience
8. Vash
9. Losing his nephew
10. Nemesis cloning/Data's death

A lot of them deal with issues relating to losing someone under his command (Mr. Crusher, Tasha, Data) & dealing with the ramifications (Beverly/Wes). Or threats to/loss of someone he loves (Vash, his nephew, even that romantic interest who got transferred).

The push out of Starfleet to retire and what pulls him back are probably on that list.

The Beverley stuff, I thought could be something. Either to drive him out (Beverly dies) or bring him back. Did they marry? Divorce? Procreate? Could Wes have a child? Still, no mention of McFadden or Wheaton, so I doubt it.

Tasha's death/life/death again was covered in the series pretty thoroughly. Picard seems at peace with it. Woman could be a descendant, but I doubt it. There was a Romulan angle, though.

Q was the bookend of TNG. Thoroughly covered. Not sure Q appearing to set things off (again) would be intriguing to Stewart.

I do not think the Klingons have enough juice to push JLP out or bring him back, even if Worf is involved. Plus they were the catalyst in DISCO.

Inner Light stuff cannot realistically be a catalyst. Perhaps a survivor/descendant? Still seems a longshot.

As does anything Vash related. She ran off with Q anyway.

The Guinan stuff got probed in Generations and Time's Arrow.

Generations also covered losing his nephew. But I think the Family issue could still play a part.

Borg transformation seems likely to play a part given what we know. But I doubt it was the driving force in either direction. Certainly not in leaving.

Which leaves us with Data/Nemesis/Romulus. This is the ground that we have not seen Picard wrestle with, as it happened in Nemesis. So I think the push AND pull reside here. Or at least one.

To get Picard to quit I think would require him to think that he failed those he loved/his crew in some way. Or that Star Fleet failed him/them in some way.

And to get him to come back would require an oppotunity to make amends.

Maybe the surviving Romulans have settled on Mintaka III with the Vulcanoids there instead of Vulcan itself? Sir Patrick is seen walking around Vasquez Rocks in the trailer, which was both Mintaka III and Vulcan.

I have a feeling that a flashback to Hobus will do the previously impossible and make me wish we could have a CBSAA Exclusive fifth TNG Movie. A story about the mission that led Picard to leave Starfleet (if that's what happened) seems worthy of being its own story, instead of just a flashback.

I hope so, I think there is some great material to be explored there. It will have been 28 years since Robert and Rene died and Picard appears to be living int he family home again, seemingly alone. I'd be surprised if they didn't touch on the fact that Picard not only has no career, but also no family anymore.

Can't Gul Dukat simply be dead? It's not like Cardassians have souls...
In What You Leave Behind, Dukat was reanimated after being killed and was permanently imprisoned with the Pah Wraiths in the Fire Caves.

They go hand in hand I’d say. Having lost his faith / sense of purpose in Starfleet, he’s probably trying to find new purpose in being the last standard-bearer of the family tradition.

When referring to Hobus, they'll wave it away with "we still don't really understand what happened" rather than try to explain how a supernova did that.

And Veridian III.

Picard revisits the wreck of the Enterprise-D to recover Lore’s body, both of which Starfleet didn’t bother removing 28 years earlier.

And Veridian III.
Actually, the Veridian III scenes were filmed at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. You can visit the site of Kirk's grave if you know the way.You can skip the first 3 minutes or so of the video.
