I've just finished chapter 19 of Open Secrets, in which the Tholian Nezrene is brought on board the station, and I'm starting to lose patience with the quality of the writing. Without giving away too much, can someone tell me if I'd miss anything interesting or important if I quit now?

Yeah, it's a catch-22.
I was amazed at how everything played out by the end of the book. I'm alittle lost at the end about a certain someone not to spoil those still reading and I hope its revealed in the next book.

I greatly enjoyed "Open Secrets", and thought the writing was fine throughout. It wasn't up to "Reap the Whirlwind" levels of greatness, but did a good job keeping the Taurus Reach and the ongoing political situation interesting. As someone who loves a) politics in Star Trek and b) as much continuity as is humanely possible, the references to the Errand of Fury books and Nimbus III were particularly pleasing.
I thought that overall Open Secrets was another great entry in the Vanguard series. I will confess that it took a bit to get going, but once it did, which was actually right around where you are, it was excellent.
Every serious series is still going to have a stinker or two. I love the Repairman Jack books. I think Conspiracy and By The Sword are not as good as the other nine books in the series. I think The Tomb is a good book, but it's probably the worst initial series book of any series I've ever read. So if, in Vanguard, Open Secrets is a stinker, well, no harm there.
However, once you get to Reyes's trial and T'Prynn to Vulcan, things get going.
And like Jack and the Dresden Files, I eagerly await the next book in this series. I
hope that they don't chuf the twist, though.
My compliments to Dayton Ward, David Mack, and the gang for a great Star Trek series set in the era of the original series, and with great connections to that series.

I loved the book enough to overlook the typos and such, which many books have anyway. Just focus on the story, and it's actually nice to see some people working with a Tholian for a change.
It was nice to have co-operative Tholians like Nezrene and Tasthene. Of course, "The Sundered" featured some reasonablly co-operative and open-minded Tholians. Even Admiral Yilskene was open to the concept of Humanoids being as complex and multifaceted as his own people. It's a shame memories like theirs have seemingly been drowned out in the Lattice by more hostile ones as of the late 24th century.
I have one question: What will happen to Pennington and T'Prynn?
I won't spoil it here, but T'Prynn's ultimate fate is already known. How Pennington fulfils that part of his fate we know of...that's an interesting question.
This was the first of the "Vanguard" books that I have read, but even with no background into the characters and setting I was totally engrossed in the book. I'm not sure if I would call it the best Star Trek novel I've ever read, but I definitely left me wanting more. I need to go back to the beginning of the series and start there. As for typos, etc., there was nothing that bothered me so much that I couldn't read it. The story was just too good, and the characters too interesting, to let little faults ruin it for me!

I was referring to the court martials anyway. Wouldn't they both have to face the council?
Pennington isn't apart of Starfleet so he won't be apart of any sort of court martial, beyond possibly being some sort of witness.
T'Prynn however we know from the DS9 Relaunch that
she either isn't court martialed or if she is then is let back in later because she serves in Starfleet Intelligence with Vaughn who is (not exactly sure of the time frames) at this point either a baby or not yet born.
I thought T'Prynn was mentioned in the DS9 Relaunch series. It's been so long since I have read them I just couldn't remember where I remember seeing her pop up again later on after Vanguard.
She is mentioned in the DS9 relaunch several times (Prynn Tenmei is her namesake), and she appears in person in "The Art of the Impossible".

Elias Vaughn is born in 2274, some 8 years after the events in Open Secrets.

I posted in the spoiler thread my review of Open Secrets already. Sadly I was pretty disappointed, as this book was not really up to the standards of the first three. A lot of the problem was that so many plot threads were left for the next book, which I always feel hurts the current material unless some of those threads are answered.
