On season 4 of Buffy...should I be watching Angel?

One difference between Spike and Angel is that Spike is able to see evil Spike as a different person from 'Souled Spike' and thus even though he does feel guilt for Evil Spike's actions he doesn't feel the need to be redeemed, as he's never used his free will to do anything evil.

The battle can't be finally won and all evil eliminated forever, and that's what Angel finally accepted when he signed away the prophecy. Even though he saved a whole lot of lives in all his minor victories. It's just bizarre that the prophecy works that way, that it can just be turned off. It's kind of interesting that the vision given to him by Cordelia led him to lose the prophecy, like TPTB intentionally led him to disavow the reward they promised him.

Who's to say he actually did sign it away, ie in that it worked. All that matters is that Angel was willing to do so, and the Black Thorne believed too he was willing to give it up. Whether it actually does or not is a fairly moot point. If the Powers That Be wanted to reward him and make him human I'm pretty sure they could and I doubt some ink on a piece of paper would stop them.

Also I always thought, if Angel wanted to be human he could always just go find a Mohra demon and get its blood on him again :)

Not Fade Away is easily my favourite ep of Angel and only beaten by about 2 Buffy episodes. Also did you notice the poem Spike reads is one he was writing in 1880 before he was sired? That was a great ending to his character.

I didn't make that connection, but I thought it was perfect that he just goes to a bar to read poetry. Kind of like, it's what he really wanted to do all this time but didn't want to be vulnerable.

Also Wesley's death scene was perfect.

Another possibly loaded question, is Supernatural worth watching? Looks like going on 11 seasons so it'd certainly occupy my Netflix viewing for a while. I started Alias and I like it but it's so dense it's something I'll probably get through slow.

@JD

I mean, I'm curious if they still would have killed Wesley & Fred if they didn't know the show was ending.

I think that the only change would have been Wesley not dying, had they gone to a 6th season.

Yeah, Wesley probably would have survived, but I think Fred still would have died and turned into Illyria.

I think the Illyria thing was independent of the show's fate. Honestly, I think it was more of a way of making Acker relevant again.

Fred was wonderful during the Plrtz Glrb eps up through "Fredless." But then the writers basically light-switched the character into Willow-lite. And she become irritatingly dull.

OTOH, Illyria was probably the best character JOSSCO ever invented.

Yup, the comics make them separate characters again in their own way, but give both something to do.

Amy must have been getting pretty damn bored of playing Fred by that point, Illyria was the polar opposite of her and you can tell she enjoyed having the freedom to play that.

Pity we didn't get a season 6 on air to see more of that.

Oh HELL yes! It's the most fun you'll have with demon hunters since Buffy and Angel.

Supernatural is often great, but occasionally meh. I still watch every new season as it comes out on Netflix, and I still enjoy it, but it should have ended a long time ago.

It's now in its 11th season, and as far as I know isn't planned to end any time soon.

Still, if you need a new show to watch, it's definitely worth checking out. The seasons are long, and there are a lot of "monster of the week" episodes, but they usually do a good job connecting to the overall themes of each season.

It's often compared to The X-Files in terms of format and story structure, only instead of two FBI agents investigating the paranormal, it's two brothers hunting demons.

Factoid- They got the call Angel had been cancelled during the filming of Underneath, the 'rescue-Lindsey-from-the-basement' episode, by which time Illyria was already around. So yeah

I've caught a few episodes of Supernatural, mostly the metatextual ones by Ben Edlund and a couple of the Felicia Day episodes. And it can be a fun show, definitely. But I just never found the two leads that engaging. I didn't like them enough as actors or characters to be interested in following their journey. So I guess it depends on your tastes.

^My wife likes them because she has a younger sister, and she says Sam and Dean are one of the most realistic and engaging sibling relationships she's seen on TV.

Me, I just like their propensity for casting hot chicks as demons. :D

Season 11 has been better than most of the previous few years, going back to the heights of season 4 and 5.
