A few threads here got me thinking - with the revivication of Star Trek successfully well under way ( arguments about that statement will be for another thread) - who would I imagine to be the perfect director to tackle the next installment?
Abrams has clearly polarized the fanbase, and while I think he did an admirable job with the actors/characters, there are surely other departments which could stand some improvement. I think one of his strengths is an ability to quickly and very efficiently sketch a character and within a few scenes, make them likeable. That's got a lot to do with the writer's and actors as well, of course, but ultimately a good director will be the person chiefly shaping the performances and deciding how a scene should work and to what end in the overall film ( This is the caveat I suppose, in that we seldom know who contributed what to each moment - but let's assume, for the sake of this discussion, that the person who gets the credit actually deserves it ).
The nature of the franchise requires not just a person who can handle drama, but also have a light comedic touch. To have an eye for performance and an ear for dialogue. Be able to shepherd (along with the producer) a well-structured and strong script. Have an eye for action set pieces and an ability to block action so that while it feels raw and chaotic, still have it be coherent to the viewer. Have good enough taste to surround himself with quality people in the production design or else be able to get quality work if he's not.
So who would your 'Dream Director' be? It'd be great to hear who, and if possible, why?
nb: naturally, all the standard assumptions will apply - that he/she will have final cut ( along with final say in all other departments pre and post)
