Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

Re: Just saw the new trailors...

Those bar-code scanners, for example, reek of 23rd Century kitsch! Why are they there? Probably because they look cool! Why do they look like the two most popular bar code scanners on the market? Probably because the set designer thought we don't pay attention to stuff like that when we go shopping!
More likely, it's that the set-dresser would never be caught dead in such a "low-brow" establishment that something like that would be used... and he thinks anyone who would is so far beneath him that we're all incapable of recognizing it anyway... durrrrrrrrr.....

It's insulting on two levels, in other words. The guy should never be allowed to work on this sort of thing again.

C'mon... you wanna use commercially-available details as "found items?" AT LEAST REPAINT THE DAMNED THINGS... or turn 'em upside down... or SOMETHING. SHEESH!

TOS used salt shakers for medical equipment, TWOK used tape-cassette trays for wall paneling, I'm sure the list of found-objects goes on and on. I don't get why some are bent out of shape about this.
Most people had never seen salt shakers like the ones seen in TOS. Most people still haven't.

Lots of people... myself included... have USED the bar-code scanner seen all over that bridge set.

If McCoy's instruments looked like THIS, it would never have floated, would it?

Re: Just saw the new trailors...

Well, the really big problem with the barcode scanners is that they aren't a part of the background scenery and they certainly don't 'blend' with the other elements.

They stick up there like big impossible-to-reach joysticks right in YOUR FACE. The fact that they're a recognizable commercial product is just the icing on the crap cake.

Re: It's been one week since I looked at you

You know, there's an entire thread dedicated to talking about the trailer that you could have posted this in...

Re: It's been one week since I looked at you

I'll just move it over there, why don't I?

3... 2... 1...

Once again, guys, this is JJ...everything JJ does is full of symbolic imagery. The barcode scanners are a way of dating the production. Everybody knows what they are, so this will pinpoint, in later years, when this production was made, what technology was like, etc.

Well, what does that actually mean? It's a way of telling us that JJ thinks that the TOS "look" is remarkably dated too, and guess what - it is. So is TMP, and every other Trek production ever made. He's just pointing out the obvious. Lords of Kobol, they even pointed out stuff like that in DS9, when they talked about what women were wearing in the 23rd century, what tricorders were like, the color scheme, the hairstyles, etc. This is simply another way of doing that.

Speaking of visual symbolism...anybody else notice the color of the car that goes over the cliff...Yeah, the car is the first redshirt in the film.

Well, the first redshirt in the trailer. For all we know that scene could take place in the middle of the movie.

Trailer things no one is talking about

1.) Why doesn''t Vulcan have its traditional red sky?

2) the building on Vulcan looks like a matte painting from ENT's 4th season, certainly not bad but not the quality we'd expect.

3) Cross looks just like Mark Lenard. Lenard has a distinct voice, but I still think of Sarek hearing Cross.

3) Do Vulcans no wear heavy sweaters?

4) Did they finally put seat belts on the bridge?

5) Is that the time ship shooting rapid fire phasers?

I'm near-certain that 1, 2, 3 (but not the second 3) and 4 have all been discussed at some point in the pinned trailer discussion thread. Why don't I move this over there, so that the Vulcan heavy sweaters and possible rapid-fire timeship phasers can be added to the mix and the rest raised again? Hang on...

Re: So I saw the trailer....

What a useful topic  - especially since you even admit that the not-star trek argument has been said plenty of times before.

Re: So I saw the trailer....

Well to be honest (this has been said plenty of times before) it feels nothing like Star Trek except for the Vulcans. However, It does it look very entertaining in the same sense that Transformers was. Confusedmatthew sums up my views very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsdmBFvdS-g

EM. For me, just about every moment of it evokes a memory of Classic Trek in one way or another. It's flashier but I sense core values are present within the pomp.

Like the part where mini-Kirk is racing the car over the cliff and the robot police stops him? Besides that though, it looks trekish but it will be more focused on action instead of social commentary or morals. Either way I'm excited.
