Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

The head of the SIS (MI6) for which Bond works is, in real life 'C'; the minister responsible for MI6 is the Foreign Secretary.
'M' is the head of the Secret Service in the Bond franchise and it's a reference to the persons name, not an abbreviation for the title.

Right, exactly. That's what Fleming was alluding to. The fact that the film-makers don't spell it out doesn't mean they don't get it - all they have to do is pick up the still in print novels. In fact, Bernard Lee's character was indeed Miles Messervy. There's no concrete reason to assume the replacement actor, Robert Brown, was a different person. A change in actor doesn't always mean a change in character (Leiter, Moneypenny - hell Bond himself).

And until the true name of Judi Dench's "M" is revealed to be Chesty LaRue, I would assume the producers are carrying on the tradition (as evidences in the GoldenEye draft).

^ IIRC, the head of Mi5 or SIS in Fleming's day was Mainwaring-Carstairs (or something similar), who signed interdepartmental memos 'C'. Fleming just chose the other initial.

ETA: I think Dame Judi would quite like it if her character's name was Chesty LaRue. :D

In case anyone still cares and it hasn't been posted yet, the trailer's available in HD on Xbox Live, so now you can watch it on your big screen TV.

And the Robert Brown "M" from Octopussy through Licence to Kill was Admiral Hargreaves of the Royal Navy who was actually in The Spy Who Loved Me as Hargreaves but had not yet joined MI-6.

Very much possible. But still, 'M' would be a designation like '007' rather than an abbreviation for 'minister' (since the minister responsible for the secret services is the Foreign Secretary). In essence 'M' is just the Bond-pendant to the real-life 'C'.

Finally got round to watching the trailer (yeah, I know, I'm crap ) - love it!

Did a double-take at the end though because the first time I heard it, Nero's voice sounded like Patrick Stewart! :wtf:

Don't think I'm going to have any problem with Simon Pegg as Scotty - he has the young Scotty's enthusiasm for the ship, but I'm not sure about Karl Urban as McCoy, that might take some time to get used to.

I think the hard 'R' sound he used in "over" may have something to do with it -- the Yorkshire accent also uses it, and though Stewart's stage accent softens that somewhat he didn't eliminate it completely. Bana (at least here) and Stewart also speak in a similar register.

I've seen a lot of people say they're good with Urban as McCoy but express reservations about Pegg's (more authentic) accent and the fact that he's known more as a comic actor, but it's far from a universal sentiment on either. Opinions vary, you could say. :D

Been a while since I visited and I'm ashamed to admit I missed the premiere of the trailer. Just watched it and as one of the oldsters around here who grew up watchig TOS when it first ran on NBC I must say I can't wait till May.

I don't give a darn about precious Trek canon or whether the E was built on ground or in space...all I care about is we have new Trek at last. It's so ridiculous to hear all these complaints about a trailer when the movie won't be out for almost 6 months. Get a grip people...have fun while you can. At the same time remember sometimes wanting is more pleasurable a thing as having. It is not logical but it is often true. Judging from the 60 seconds I've seen so far I think having will definitely be a blast. I can't wait to get into space again.

Peace and long life to all.

According to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the comic not the horrible movie), the designation M has it origins in the first person to hold the position of head of SIS/MI-6-- Professor James Moriarty.

And "Jimmy" is a crazed sex-pest killer (hum.. not far from the truth..)

The less we mention LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN the better...okay? That movie sucked harder than outtakes from HELLBOY involving Ron Perlman getting his penis stuck in his costume's front zipper.

Then there's that quaint little retirement village as well.

I still get the shivers when Urban says "Space is disease and danger wraped in darkness and silence" :D

I think that's a line I'm going to love when I see the movie but in the trailer it comes too suddenly and it's finished before I've figured out where I am!

yeah, he looks and sounds kinda menacing.

and then I thought about how DeForest Kelley used to play all these heavies before McCoy came around.

I'm liking this trailor... especially the Spock stuff.

How can I save the trailer in my harddisk?
Right click and select "save as" on one of these links:

Yeah, it's in the movie.

Oh, and here's a phaser:

Maybe. Looks different from the one in the security dude's hand when Spock is choking Kirk on the bridge. Romulan weapon, perhaps?

thanks for the dl links :techman:

People,

I'm probably one of the last fans to see the trailer -- just watched it three times --and my first impression when I began watching it was, "Is this a commercial before the trailer?" Thought it was some kind of Extreme Sports ad, until the sandy-haired kid speaks the famous name.

My first impression of Pine's voice: Not too heroic sounding, so I hope his voice grows on me. I did like the one line Quinto utters. I think he is probably the best-cast of all the characters.

I'm wondering about how good a choice Simon Pegg is as Scotty -- sounds a little goofy to me, but then again, this is the same guy who was in Sean of the Dead.

My other main impression is I see what Abrams meant about making this flick like Star Wars. Seems like there'll be lots of ships exploding in this one.

There are lots of scenes that are tantalizing, showing us brief glimpses of the story in a way that does make me at least want to find out what's really going on.

As other posters have pointed out, the die-hard ST fans still have the original show to watch. I have a hopeful feeling this movie will be well-received.
