So I guess then you multiply the multiplier times the first weekend's take and get the projected total?

I use multiplier as the final take divided by opening weekend.

Atleast its not got Maid in Manhatten to compete with I don't think it will get as much as everyone is predicting as its still a Trek film and as we know these films have certain stigmas.
Your average film goer is more likely going to see Wolverine so that films numbers are nothing to go by.
I hope im wrong and it gets atleast 80million.

A 2.3-2.5 multiplier is definitely in the cards, and I think it'll be bigger the lower the opening weekend is.

I'm going to say it opens at $68 million.

So in your opinion would it be better for the total box office in the long run for the movie to open at 65 million instead of say 80 million? Why would the multiplier be higher if it has a lower opening weekend? Wouldn't that mean there is less good word of mouth because less people have seen it?

I'm assuming that the film's final gross doesn't depend a whole lot on the opening weekend -- it's just a matter of whether the word of mouth starts spreading before, during or after the opening weekend. I could, of course, be way off base.

Am surprised that so many people are going for $80-100 million+ predictions. I do think Trek will make close to or over $300 million worldwide and that will be a success but I don't see it being this mega hit that some critics and fans think.

I'd vote 50 -75, thinking maybe something closer to 75.

But honestly, right now I don't care at all.
All I care for, is that it is a good, entertaining Trek movie. Once this hope and desire has been fulfilled maybe then I'll start worrying about box office numbers.

I'm thinking 75-100 million and I'm using your reasoning to reach that conclusion. You're right, this movie has been saturating the ad market, I mean they have a NASCAR with a Trek XI paint shop and it races. With an idiot driver, but it races, so lots of fans see it. I mean, come on, that's ad campaigning!

If it does 75-100 million opening weekend, I will be thrilled. If it does more than that, I will be absolutely ecstatic.

I don't really care if Trek can't open as big as Wolverine, especially given the fact I'm pretty sure after seeing that piece of crap, Trek will make more in the end.

I do kind of need to see it beat Fast and Furious though. Just to feel better about society.

Not a big deal. My personal opinion is the less stuff stickied to the top of a forum the better. I don't like clutter. Plus most people skip right over stickies anyway.

My guess for box office will be 65 million.
