Of the 4 Spider-Man films made so far, what 2 are your favorite and why

Re: Of the 4 Spider-Man films made so far, what 2 are your favorite and

Well, I loved the Raimi films (I even kinda liked the third one), but I think I may love the new one too. I don't understand fans who think that two versions of a character or franchise have to be pitted against each other in a fight to the death, that loving one requires loathing the other. Having different takes on a beloved concept is a good thing, because it lets you experience it in new ways and discover new facets of it.

For those people who've seen Spider-Man 4, how does it stack against the other 3 films.

Much better. I could easily imagine Tobey sitting there watching the movie, thinking "Oh, so that's how Spidey is supposed to be acted!" while Kirsten is sitting there thinking "Unicorns and puppies are fun," still not understanding what the word "acting" even means.

Emma Stone acts circles around Kirsten Dunst.

There is some small amount of sympathy for the bad guy this time around. They give him a reason for being a bad guy, not just "Well, the script says I have to be bad, so mwahahaha!"

So yes, #4 is my favorite so far, followed very distantly by #1, since the question is which 2 are my favorites. And that second choice is only thanks to the Uncle.

Though, I am tempted to list either of the TV movies in its place.

Of the 4 films, the first two Raimi films remain my favorites. Why?

-Spider-Man: Up until that point I had never seen anything like that film. I thought it captured Spider-Man's suit, the characters, his universe almost perfectly. Sure there were changes as there will be in a live-action adaptation of any comic book material, but I thought the Raimi films got so much right. I got caught up in Peter's yearning for Mary Jane, that one great youthful crush, and how he ultimately had to reject her in order to protect her. And Uncle Ben's death moved me in a way that Amazing Spider-Man's Uncle Ben death scene didn't and it really hammered home the idea of great power and great responsibility. And I really liked Willem Dafoe as the Goblin. I think he got the madness right, and added just a hint of concern for Harry beneath it. Aunt May and JJJ were also solid.

-Spider-Man 2: I don't like this one as much as the first and I never quite got the critical praise. However I think it storywise it was a very organic follow on to the first film and I thought Alfred Molina made for a good Doc Ock, even though his ultimate plan didn't make much sense, and I still don't get how you can douse a sun in a harbor. But the action pieces were big and well done and for the most part I enjoyed where the film took all of the characters. Unfortunately some of the campiness of Spider-Man 3 first reared its head in this film, with the overlong "Raindrops" sequence.

As for Amazing Spider-Man, I liked it, but didn't love it. I'll go see sequels but I wasn't bowled over by either Garfield or Stone. However it is my third favorite film.

Distant fourth is Spider-Man 3. Let's start with the positives, I did like the black suit. I also liked some of the bad Peter bits and him as Spider-Man in the black suit. I thought Sandman was perfectly cast. But that's about it. I didn't like the too coincidental way the symbiote just dropped out of the sky near Spider-Man, I thought the bad Peter bit went on too long, Gwen Stacy was wasted, Topher Grace shouldn't have been in this film (and the idea of creating a dark reflection of Peter just didn't work in part because his Eddie Brock was so poorly developed), Venom was wasted, hated the Sandman killing Uncle Ben retcon, also didn't like Peter just letting Sandman go at the end.

I liked the first one, and saw the second one, but I don't really remember much of it. Never saw the third, but my son is now 10 and getting into superhero movies, so I'll go see the new one with him.
If it were just up to me though, I'd wait until it comes out on DVD and get it at Redbox.

Re: Of the 4 Spider-Man films made so far, what 2 are your favorite and

I thought the first Raimi movie was great; what made it for me was the dynamic direction and editing I expected from Raimi after films like Darkman and Army of Darkness. Spider-man 2 and 3 really seemed like they were directed by a different man. 2 at least had the Doc Ock arms sequence, but 3 had nothing of Raimi's style in it. I don't think it was Raimi's choice either given that Drag Me to Hell went right back to Raimi's style. Despite the first Spidey film's success, it seems like Raimi was being held back starting with 2.

I expect my favorite two will be the first Raimi film and this new one, but I haven't seen the new one yet.

The new one's the best of the bunch, and I quite liked the second one - even if they did shut down a runaway reactor by chucking it in the water...the other two - nah...
