Of God's and Men ??

Saw a clip on you tube, is this any good? seemed like a Mirror Universe story?
Perhaps this should be moved to the Movies thread.?

I have it on DVD. It is an alternate reality type of movie. It isn't too bad. It technically is a fan film although some big name Trek actors are in it.

I didn't care for it.

And this thread would be more at home in the Fan Productions forum.

The big reveal of how things got the way they were in the alt timeline left me confused

I mean should't Gary Mitchell be able to enslave the galaxy without any military power. He seemed pretty depowered in this timeline.

I really don't get that battle bit at the end, and why couldn't they get Gary Lockwood or Robert Walker?? I would have preferred either to Garret Wong. Did you notice Nichelle got the lyrics wrong?

It assembles a nice cast of B-listers from various Trek series, but it's not very well made. I've never even been able to finish it. Fannish is a good way to describe it.

It was okay in terms of acting and production values. IMO it still doesn't come close to the quality of Exeter and New Voyages/Phase II.

I loved it. It's my favourite fan film by quite a margin. A sweet little epilogue to TOS. I went in with zero expectations after the awful trailer and LOVED it.

I have mixed feelings about that fan film. I felt the big problem was with the editing. It felt too long in parts. Uhura's narration at the beginning was way too long and unessessary. I would take that out completely, as it is just depressing. Everything that needs to be said about Kirk is said on the bridge.

I do think that this is a good fan film, but there are a few things that could be done to improve it for a future edition. If anything, I think they should revisit this film and do a better cut. Definitely trim down Ethan Phillips scene at the beginning. I would also replace some of the FX, which look a bit dated now.

Hey, James Cawley is no B lister! Anyway, here's my page on it with my views: http://startrekreviewed.blogspot.com/2009/06/24.html . As far as I know, it's the only Fan Film with Russian subtitles.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that James Cawley is a B-lister. I enjoyed Cawley's role in the film as Kirk's nephew. As I had mentioned in the previous post, I thought Uhura's narration at the start was a bit pointless, because everything that needed to be said about Kirk's passing was said by the actors on the bridge. It was heartfelt, and not as depressing as Uhura's overly long narration.

Cut out that narration, and put in some classic Trek music over the Enterprise Museum reveal, and I think you would have a far more exciting intro. I'm a firm believer of "less is more", and the film tends too suffer from to much exposition at the start.

It should have been better. It wasn't. Surprisingly, I was mostly disappointed with the acting of the Trek regulars.

Too bad, because I thought the film had so much promise when I first heard about it. Imagine a studio quality Trek living again on the 'net.

The major letdown for me was the writing. It still surprises me that the original actors agreed to appear, and that Russ signed off on the script as director. I found the script very weak.

I still think that there is a good film hiding in there. It just needs a better edit. Some of the weaker acting moments could probably be cut right out of the film without anyone noticing they were gone. The script is a bit hard to follow in parts, but with a new edit, they might be able to make the story easier to follow.

One of the things that made "classic" Trek great was that the stories were easy to follow and understand. That is what makes them timeless. For me, this is where "Gods and Men" really begins to fall apart. I get the feeling watching it that, aside from what we see in the bloopers, they were hesitant to cut anything out of the film. It feels like they did what they could to pad it into a "feature film", when it really should have been a 60 minute episode.
