Of Gods and Men - Act 3

It *did* look like Angela Martel, didn't it?

Pity she had such crappy grammar. "Thou mayest join minds" is... well, wrong. THOU is a second-person singular address. She was talking to TWO people, and the proper second-person singular address -- even in "forsooth speak" -- is YOU.

And as for time paradoxes... hell, I'm still trying to figure out how Charlie going through the Guardian changed Harriman, Uhura, and Chekov. From our previous encounters with the Guardian, people on the planet are IMMUNE to the changes that have happened.

Yeah, it was necessary for the plot -- but if something necessary for the plot is WRONG, then the PLOT is wrong and should be redone.

I appreciate it is a fan production, and in that regard it is very well made. But it has a strong amateur feel to it that shows through stronger than the story. But it is unfair for me to highlight that, but this isn't Hollywood.

Director Tim Russ in particular, has gone on record saying that OGaM is not a fan film. It was made with the help of fans, sure - but with the involvement of professional actors, crew and writers. And, it's being used in a professional capacity too - to promote PlanetXpo products and even some none Star Trek related merchandise (in the form of advertising on the download page)...

Even still, it's pretty terrible. Exeter and Phase II/New Voyages have produced far superior work.

I just felt sorry for Koenig and Nicholls by the end.

I really thought they'd have nuclear wessels in the last chapter. It would have made all the difference in that space battle.

I wanted to like, I really did, but it was just disappointing. Gary Mitchell was a bit too much, a bit too "fan porn" or whatever was said above. Charlie totally switching gears at the end of Act II was ridiculous, first he's just evil and then after a single sentence from Uhura, suddenly he realizes the error of his ways. The end battle didn't do it for me at all, Gary Graham's shape-changing thing was too deus ex machina and too heavily relied on, Stonn, even in our universe, is still smirking at his wedding ... I can go on and on and on. Bravo to them for making it, it was free so I can't really complain too much, but still ... after all of those months and months of making us wait, this is the best they could do?

Well, Charlie Evans DID witness the destruction of the Federation in the OGAM timeline.

I did quite thoroughly enjoy it far more than other fan productions. I just loved the way Ketric (SP?)...

Spoilers BELOW (can't get the SPOILER tag to work):

...used a warp core breach of the star-drive section of the ship's shockwave to ram the saucer section into Alt. Mitchell's ship.

Fan-wank it may be, it was pretty fucking awesome.

Ahhhh... Trek Fans...:wtf:

Downloading it now, hope it was worth the wait.

I found the site difficult to navigate. Would someone be nice (to this web-illiterate soul) and post links to the three parts download locations/files? I HATE streaming video and prefer downloads (less choppy, buffering, annoying)

Thanks,

Q2

^ probably by typing the address of the flv into your browser? That's how its normally done.

There are several. It finds the one closest to your location. You can pull information like this from your browser's activity viewer once the flash video plugin loads. :)

Let me see...

...yes I'm looking at the url now. Copied into the browser it starts downloading the flv to default directory. It does work.

I've just watched all three.

I appreciate it is a fan production, and in that regard it is very well made. But it has a strong amateur feel to it that shows through stronger than the story. But it is unfair for me to highlight that, but this isn't Hollywood.

The story itself feels like it has been over-enthusiastically written to cram as much in as possible. It screams of "Yeeeah, we've got Tuvok and Uhura, lets have this and that and a big space battle and..."

There is too little depth, yet too much complexity. I didn't find it easy viewing. It really feels like we walk straight out of one drama and right into the next. Unlike most films there isn't that flow of ups and down of feeling that normally sets pace in a film.

If there's one way I'd describe it -- it played out rather like a dream; a linear progression of strong emotions and lingering images, which superficially fill the gap between the beginning and the end.

Related to that, the is the directing, as there is a stuffy and claustraphobic atmosphere that doesn't once ease up, and on two occasions I felt the need to pause the film, take a break, and find myself some fresh air.

I will give thumbs up to the sound fx and music guys, who's work I can't fault. Graphics was fairly good too, as well as the set design, the costumes, and above average acting.

The camera work was okay at best. Set lighting was poor. So despite the great achievements and the obvious effort that's gone into this production, I think that its greatest failing is in poor directing, poor story/scriptwriting, and less than impressive set lighting.

Overall: A miss :(

Very good assessment - I agree with just about all of it. Trying to cram in a little less and focusing more on character and plot would have helped greatly. The key plot point - *SPOILER*

Charlie Evans conversion, is addressed with a single line? They had to focus more on what happened there, and how the relationships affected his decisions. On the upside, Chase Masterson looked hot, and the chick at navigation was hot as well! Kudos to all those that put in the time and effort to entertain us, but Cawley's bunch do a much better job of storytelling. Hey - try, try again!

I still can't get it to work. It says "Selecting optimal video for your connection" and then the controls pop up...and promptly disappear again. This happens over and over and over. Checking the Activity window (I'm using Safari) reveals that the flv file was Not Found.

Trying to watch all three acts won't work either - the third act still can't be found.

The only way is to manually download the third act. Is that how you all did it?

Oh well. I managed to d/l Part 3 (finally!). I liked it a lot - probably my favorite of all three. Although those scenes with Uhura and Charlie at the end were cringe-worthy.

Loved the bloopers though. Especially where Garrett Wang surrepetitiously plants a piece of candy on the control panel, Crystal Allen finds it and eats it, then frantically jabs at the other controls to see which of them might also be candy. :guffaw:

Not to mention what lept out to me as a big plot hole. This alt universe arose because Kirk wasn't around. Well, didn't Kirk ask for Micthell on his first command (The Enterprise)? So, if Kirk didn't exist then Mitchel wouldn't have been on the Enterprise for that mission. And the gravestone they show if for Captain Pike. Why would he have still been in command of the ship? It seems like his career would have been much the same with another Captain commanding the ship.

Assuming Kirk never existed in the alternate timeline, there could be reasons why Pike might have served with Gary. Pike might have also asked for him as well, or perhaps Gary just happened to be assigned there anyway.

Addendum: Anyone catch the BSG (original series) references? Two of them, actually; 1) Herb Jefferson Jr., and 2) The Klingon BOPs fire with the Cylon weapons sound. :)
