Of Gods and Men - Act 3

GothTrek

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I just watched a preview of it and it is friggin' outstanding! Definitely worth the wait and everything pays off in this final chapter. Tune in on Sunday!

Watch it twice...big fangasm (which is probably why it would never have worked as a general release).

Yow. Couple of severely unexpected tie-ins, but the whole "40 years of adventures" "and here's to 40 more" thing kicked ass. :techman:

Unfortunately, I found it embarrassing to sit through. Just everything I dislike about most fan productions in general; full of continuity porn, a everything but the kitchen sink mentality to the plot, capped off with a "kewl" space battle.

I'm glad others enjoyed this, but alas it was not for me. Give me Starship Exeter and New Voyages/Phase 2 instead.

I liked it.

As far as the "continuity porn" as you call it, this is a Trek alternate universe sans Kirk and how the Federation turned into the Galactic Order.

Wait, it's an alternate universe? Really? I did not know that. My god, your insight into my lack of comprehension has opened my eyes to the perfection that is Of Gods and Men!

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!

I for one like it, and I'm usually (if silently) critical of a lot of what I see of fan productions. Yes, there was a lot of so-called "continuity porn," but I believe that was the point of OGAM. I wouldn't expect anything less of a production designed to celebrate the totality of Star Trek.

I wanted to like, I really did, but it was just disappointing. Gary Mitchell was a bit too much, a bit too "fan porn" or whatever was said above. Charlie totally switching gears at the end of Act II was ridiculous, first he's just evil and then after a single sentence from Uhura, suddenly he realizes the error of his ways. The end battle didn't do it for me at all, Gary Graham's shape-changing thing was too deus ex machina and too heavily relied on, Stonn, even in our universe, is still smirking at his wedding ... I can go on and on and on. Bravo to them for making it, it was free so I can't really complain too much, but still ... after all of those months and months of making us wait, this is the best they could do?

I really enjoyed parts one and two, but the conclusion was a bit of a let down. The ending seemed rushed to me and the battle felt like a bunch of filler material. I like the idea of Gary Micthell being the villain, but it didn't seem well executed to me.

Not to mention what lept out to me as a big plot hole. This alt universe arose because Kirk wasn't around. Well, didn't Kirk ask for Micthell on his first command (The Enterprise)? So, if Kirk didn't exist then Mitchel wouldn't have been on the Enterprise for that mission. And the gravestone they show if for Captain Pike. Why would he have still been in command of the ship? It seems like his career would have been much the same with another Captain commanding the ship.

Overall it was a bit of a letdown. I expected a lot more after the strong opening.

It's one of the time travel "everything is different except the stuff that's the same" things. Kind of how in Yesterday's Enterprise the whole crew was the same (except Worf) even after a timeline that had been diverging for decades. So we just make the assumption that the "eddies in the space-time continuum" (and this is his couch) brought things along to the point where Mitchel and Pike went to the edge of the galaxy together.

M'self, I was more worried about where Mitch got his new sense of wardrobe. ;)

To be fair, I enjoyed it. All things considered, I would put it on par with one of the better third season TOS eps. The one thing I really *did* have problems with was the sudden change of heart on Charlie's part. Out of the blue, very boguslike.

But some bitchin space battle stuff.

I've just watched all three.

I appreciate it is a fan production, and in that regard it is very well made. But it has a strong amateur feel to it that shows through stronger than the story. But it is unfair for me to highlight that, but this isn't Hollywood.

The story itself feels like it has been over-enthusiastically written to cram as much in as possible. It screams of "Yeeeah, we've got Tuvok and Uhura, lets have this and that and a big space battle and..."

There is too little depth, yet too much complexity. I didn't find it easy viewing. It really feels like we walk straight out of one drama and right into the next. Unlike most films there isn't that flow of ups and down of feeling that normally sets pace in a film.

If there's one way I'd describe it -- it played out rather like a dream; a linear progression of strong emotions and lingering images, which superficially fill the gap between the beginning and the end.

Related to that, the is the directing, as there is a stuffy and claustraphobic atmosphere that doesn't once ease up, and on two occasions I felt the need to pause the film, take a break, and find myself some fresh air.

I will give thumbs up to the sound fx and music guys, who's work I can't fault. Graphics was fairly good too, as well as the set design, the costumes, and above average acting.

The camera work was okay at best. Set lighting was poor. So despite the great achievements and the obvious effort that's gone into this production, I think that its greatest failing is in poor directing, poor story/scriptwriting, and less than impressive set lighting.

Overall: A miss :(

A little spoiler here if you haven't seen it...

But how was Charlie able to go back to the scene in the beginning of the movie? The moment should have been eliminated from the timeline already. Haven't these people seen Back to the Future 2? He should have gone to the earliest point in which the timeline was altered, and phasered his ass then.
