O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Plus if Conan went back to 12:35 he could be raunchy again. Is the Masterbating Bear still frozen in carbonite? :( I stopped watching Conan shortly after he started at 11:35 is he getting funnier again?

Andy Richter is the Ed McMahon of our generation.

I live in China, so obviously, I don't get NBC. I do however watch TV shows from a Chinese website which basically steals the broadcast and puts it online. If is usually broadcast about two days afterwards on the Chinese websites, sometimes with subtitles. This is how I watch all the shows I like or buy pirated DVD's. Now I don't even mess with the DVD's because everything is online now.

I am not a fan of late night TV, especially not since Johnny left and died. It's basically a bunch of A lsters talking about their charming lives and the next stupid, vapid who gives a sh!t motion picture or book they are peddling. Now, if someone I happen to like is on a show, like Clint Eastwood, I'll watch.

I personally don't like Letterman, he's just seems like a jerk to me. Paul Schaffer, I'll pass. Leno is not funny, but he is genuinely a nice person and he does appreciate the people who do watch him. The deal with the audience coming up and shaking his hand before his TV show is something that he does. Letterman would hate to touch the proles. Leno is warm and friendly, Letterman standoffish and above it all.

I haven't watch Conan in years. He comes on too late for me. He did some ridiculous talking dog segment. He did have the Mex Wineburg 7 which is/was the best late night band. But it is basically the same show as Leno and Letterman. This is why people tend to like the host because it is all the same.

Someone on another board suggested that the local news comes on BEFORE the new Leno show, maybe at 10 PM Eastern time, then Leno at 11PM, then Conan at 12 PM. Why must all the TV stations have their local news at the same time?

I watched an episode of "The Jay Leno Show" and it was just butt awful. Bad. Stinks. Leno has never changed his style of humor and it just wasn't working. I watched until the first commercial and turned it off. I don't think NBC had a bad idea with a five day a week show, but the format here is so shotty and worn. NBC should of brought in someone younger and made a more youthful Ed Sullivan meets MTV meets the Video Age type of thing.

My question is, who watches these late night shows anyway? They just seemed so dated. Most Americans have 30 to 50 channels of TV, and some much much more. The cable networks are making really good shows, while the traditional networks have these silly talk shows that is basically the same crap with different hosts and guests.

My elderly parents always like Dateline NBC with Jane Pauly. I have read that news programs like 60 Minutes, 20/20 and Dateline are much cheaper to produce than conventional sitcoms and return good ratings. What happened to Howie Mandel's game show. Who the f k hired of all the people on Earth, Howie f'ing Mandel to do it, especially now that he is a walking cue ball with a whisp of chin hair. Probably the same idiot who hired Maury Povich to do "21" another commercial flop.

As for NBC, not all their shows are crap. I like Law and Order, especially SVU and the Original Series. I like the revolving cast of characters which is realistic in real life. I like the Office too. One show that I love is Parks and Recreation.

Another question would be, in these economic times, why are we still supporting this overfed, grossly underworked and incredibly paid segment of society? Leno makes something like $30 million dollars a year and he is no funnier than a drunk Shriner. Or some freak the size of a tree playing basketball, or whatever. Oprah. God I hate her. May she be hit by a bus.

Remember, this is the network that cancelled Star Trek!

First, I think that NBC will want to keep a New York-based late-night talk show, mainly to take advantage of guests in that area. When the dust settles they won't have two full hours from Los Angeles.

Given that, I think there's zero chance that Conan will voluntarily step down from The Tonight Show, move back to NYC and then take Late Night away from Jimmy Fallon.

O'Brien evidently does have some say here - if he doesn't want to be moved back to 12:05 he has the option of walking, and FOX has made clear that they want him.

FOX has also apparently talked to Leno. They almost can't lose here - one of these guys is likely to be a free agent shortly, and FOX will put him on against whoever stays at NBC.

The difference is NBC is doing all of this to keep Leno away from the other networks, they don't care if Conan goes to Fox, but they do Leno. Leno has a two year deal with NBC, NBC said they would let Conan out of his contract but didn't say anything about Leno. At this point I think it's very clue Leno is staying and Conan can move to 12:05 or leave. To me all this does is make Leno look like an asshole. If I were him I'd tell NBC no, a deal is a deal. I want my hour long show at 10pm.

I don't get why they don't just bump everything back and go back to the way things were last year? Or at least why Conan would have a problem with that? I guess that would seem like a demotion to him or something?

Money.

This whole mess is over money. Conan got The Tonight Show and Leno got fired so NBC didn't have to pay Conan more. There was something in Conan's contract that said he would host at 11:35 by date "X" or get X more money. NBC is extremely cheap and destroyed their network even more to save some money. It's all really just said.

Plus Conan's ratings are bad, and so are Leno's. NBC thinks they can get their ratings back if they move Leno back to 11:35.

Out of curioristy due to recent events, I downloaded a few episodes from the past week and he feels like a tamer version of the guy who hosted Late Night with Conan O'Brien. There's still some very good chuckles, the Friday show especially had some good lines about the whole situation. Some comedians who have appeared on the new Tonight Show have popped up on some radio shows I listen to and have commented that there's a strong corporate presence backstage on Conan's show...Personally, whatever happens, I'd like to see him end up in a situation where he can embrace his quirky side.

I read that Conan really wanted to stay and to the tonight show from NYC, but corporate dictated the move so they could "keep him in line."

I think you're forgetting how most of NBC's 10 PM dramas over the past few seasons have tanked in the ratings. Prior to this "experiment" the head of NBC was openly suggesting the network would not even program anything at 10 PM. I'm sure it seemed like a natural solution to stick Jay in there instead of giving up completely.

Now that Conan is getting beaten by Letterman repeats, NBC obviously doesn't care if he leaves or not. Also, part of me thinks this was subconsciously the network's way of making people miss 10 PM dramas on NBC, so that when they brought them back there would be all this hoopla over it and they could crawl out of their ratings hole at that hour.

Which dropping the 10pm shows is.... money.

However sticking Leno in there was only because they didn't want him on another network. They could have dropped the 10pm hour and the news would be on there like Fox does.

With the way NBC thinks you might be on to something, they are getting more press about this than they have in years. No one will give a rats ass about the 10pm hour if all NBC does is pick up shows that are complete shit like they always do. They probably should have kept Southland and Medium right about now.

I think a lot of the brass at NBC don't like Jay, and haven't for some time now.

I've heard he's quite the asshole.

I am very involved in the classic car hobby and car nuts of different brands. Leno is known in the car world for being a cheapskate and an asshole. He'll fuck someone over when it comes to buying a classic vehicle, yet the moment he owns it the vehicle somehow is worth many times more than what he paid for it.

I look forward to seeing an unwatered-down Conan O'Brien on Fox whenever his NBC contract is done.

I look forward to FOX buying out the remainder of his contract and moving him there sooner rather than later.

Leno at 11:35 and Conan at 12:05? NBC keeps trying to split the baby. But at least Leno will be gone from primetime, and the network can begin repairing its lineup by bringing in more scripted programming.

I'd like to see executive heads roll before this is all over, starting with Jeff Zucker.

Didn't FOX air Arsenio Hall at 10 p.m.? Of course, things were different back then.

My memory was that he aired at 11PM (EST), I'm pretty sure he was not in prime time.
EDIT: According to Wiki, it was syndicated so we might both be right depending on location.

What bullshit. Leno's show failed? Then take him off the air! He had his chance at the Tonight Show, it should be over. Conan is totally getting screwed. I say he takes over Letterman's show in a year or two.

so which show will actually be "the Tonight Show"??? since Conan's show would technically be the "early early early morning show" if it doesnt start till after midnight...

my opinion is nbc needs to dump at least 2 of their late night shows anyway, 2 is plenty, FOUR is absurd
