Hey, maybe we'll end up with a sequel to The Late Shift.
First, I think that NBC will want to keep a New York-based late-night talk show, mainly to take advantage of guests in that area. When the dust settles they won't have two full hours from Los Angeles.Plus if Conan went back to 12:35 he could be raunchy again...
O'Brien evidently does have some say here - if he doesn't want to be moved back to 12:05 he has the option of walking, and FOX has made clear that they want him.
FOX has also apparently talked to Leno. They almost can't lose here - one of these guys is likely to be a free agent shortly, and FOX will put him on against whoever stays at NBC.
I don't get why they don't just bump everything back and go back to the way things were last year? Or at least why Conan would have a problem with that? I guess that would seem like a demotion to him or something?
Out of curioristy due to recent events, I downloaded a few episodes from the past week and he feels like a tamer version of the guy who hosted Late Night with Conan O'Brien. There's still some very good chuckles, the Friday show especially had some good lines about the whole situation. Some comedians who have appeared on the new Tonight Show have popped up on some radio shows I listen to and have commented that there's a strong corporate presence backstage on Conan's show...Personally, whatever happens, I'd like to see him end up in a situation where he can embrace his quirky side.Plus if Conan went back to 12:35 he could be raunchy again. Is the Masterbating Bear still frozen in carbonite?I stopped watching Conan shortly after he started at 11:35 is he getting funnier again?

Money.
This whole mess is over money. Conan got The Tonight Show and Leno got fired so NBC didn't have to pay Conan more. There was something in Conan's contract that said he would host at 11:35 by date "X" or get X more money.

I think you're forgetting how most of NBC's 10 PM dramas over the past few seasons have tanked in the ratings. Prior to this "experiment" the head of NBC was openly suggesting the network would not even program anything at 10 PM. I'm sure it seemed like a natural solution to stick Jay in there instead of giving up completely.
Now that Conan is getting beaten by Letterman repeats, NBC obviously doesn't care if he leaves or not. Also, part of me thinks this was subconsciously the network's way of making people miss 10 PM dramas on NBC, so that when they brought them back there would be all this hoopla over it and they could crawl out of their ratings hole at that hour.
I think a lot of the brass at NBC don't like Jay, and haven't for some time now.
I've heard he's quite the asshole.
I look forward to seeing an unwatered-down Conan O'Brien on Fox whenever his NBC contract is done.
Didn't FOX air Arsenio Hall at 10 p.m.? Of course, things were different back then.
