NX Refit

This shot looks absolutely stunning! No idea if you’re still tweaking the hull material, but the way it is now with that metallic sheen looks strikingly perfect.

Thanks Michael :) .The material right now is along the sort of lines I want, but it's still got some issues like picking up strong highlights on the edge of some panels. It's also completely procedural, so for a final version of this material I'll be wanting to add some customisation to various parts once the model is complete.

I really like where this is going. :D Those nacelle domes are sweet, love the plasma effect there. :mallory::techman:

Well thankyou very much! But I think that if anything on this ends up being better executed than the original, it'll be down to my PC that's 20 years newer and more capable than the one that built the original, and also the months that I can afford myself in building this thing. :)
Sure, there’s that. But also, shape-wise you just make it look way more interesting. It’s at the same time more elegant / flowing / organic and sharp-edged / utilitarian / believable. So that’s quite a feat. Can’t wait for what you’re doing with the details on the secondary hull.

The original NX has some very complex shapes, particularly on the catamaran hulls. Maybe what makes this version have a different vibe is that it's overall a much simpler shape, but still detailed on the smaller scale: For example, when viewed from the side or above, the outer lines to each catamaran consist of one or two curves. So whatever other details and features are hung off of it, the fundamental shape remains something that the eye easily can pick up on:

To be clear, I absolutely love the NX design language (its pretty much my favourite at this point), I just want to do my own take on things too :)

Thanks! The underside is going very quickly now (much quicker than it took to do the nacelle.) So I should be onto the secondary hull sometime next week.

Personally i like those darker rings, adds a certain contrast and breaks up the surface of the saucer into distinct parts which to me makes it more interesting without them being overdone or too much, they're just right. :mallory:
Also your renders have been ultra sharp and ultra realistic, no idea what makes them look that way but it's so very good. :techman::mallory:

Thanks, I try to do my best on rendering and post, because it's the area I am least confident in. That last image, in particular - I looked at it a while later and realized that it had really low levels of lighting contrast compared to what I had thought it had. It's been suggested to me that I plug in different HDRIs as I work, that way I never lose objectivity. I'm going to try and work like this, going forward.

Ship with a HDRI, plus one spotlight:

I would say that you can be a bit more confident in what you're doing with rendering and post, I think everyone will agree with me on that. :D
That spotlight is a nice way to highlight details. :mallory:

I haven't updated this project in a couple of weeks because whilst I've been doing a lot of modelling, it's mostly been replacing the secondary hull's low-poly mesh with a high-poly version, which doesn't look all that different at a distance despite the big time sink. Now that I've finished it though, I can start the plating. So far, the front of the secondary hull has got its hull panels, and I'll possibly tackle the cutout next week:

That's off to a great start, just take your time btw. :D :mallory: :techman:
Good advice, that I unfortunately don't always follow! Case in point, I was getting a bit ahead of myself earlier in the week, and came up with a hull plating pattern on the aft of the secondary hull that wasn't really consistent with the front half:

So that ended up getting junked, and I made this on the second attempt:

So that leaves the cutout and the boxy power transfer conduits connecting to the bottom of the nacelle pylons as the last major elements left to model. After that, I'd like to get the internal window boxes placed, so there's something more interesting than white circles in the portholes.
