Notably missing characters that would be cool in the next movie.

I suppose they could toss both Xon and M'Ress into a sequel as fanwank fodder for the diehard Trekkers in the audience who'd get the references. To know who Xon was you need to be familiar with the failed PHASE II concept from 1976-78...something even many self-professed Trekkers aren't.

From a story telling standpoint, there was no reason to have Chekov, Sulu, or even Scotty in there. Uhura was given a more substantial role, but I saw no reason why she should have the same name as the original character.
They were just there because JJ felt Star Trek HAD to have the "whole group." IMHO, without the same actors, there isn't any real reason to have them, unless they were genuinely germain to the plot.

Actually, when you put it that way, I agree with you. When I first heard the early rumours that this was going to Kirk and Spock's origin story, I thought it would be exactly that. The story of Kirk and Spock's first mission. That may actually have been a more interesting story as opposed to all the TOS gang meeting up all at once. Just watch TOS, they don't all meet at the same time. Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and Sulu did. Then McCoy and Uhura arrive later on, and finally Chekov at a later point.

I can see what both of you are saying. There is no real reason to have the *whole* gang back together by the end of the movie. And there's plenty of reasons why *not* to have them on the same bridge at the same time. (Plausibility for one. Chronology for another.)

But they fucking had to be, or else we'd all be going nuts right now. "Will they have Chekov in the sequel?" "Why was there no Scotty?" "Is John Cho going to play Sulu?" "Why did they replace our beloved characters?!!"

If Chekov and/or Sulu were no longer in the movie and they were replaced by... let's say a sexy female helmsman and a bizarre looking alien navigator, there would be a ginormous outcry on this very forum. "They must have thought no one would care." "Theses two are replacement scrappies of the lowest order." "Their absence proves just how little respect thses writers have for canon." "The actors who originated these roles must feel disregarded and betrayed."

Actually, if the "bizarre looking alien navigator" had been Lt. Arex, than the fanboys would have loved it.

Completely wierd that they didn't spot this one!

Personally, I would have been perfectly happy if Chekov had been absent or if only the older characters (Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Rand) had featured, although I'd have been crying foul if the others didn't feature in the sequel.

I understand their desire to include the major characters when they weren't sure that there would be a sequel but Chekov's presence goes beyond convolution - he is essentially a different person with the same name.

I'd have preferred Rand instead of Chekov - she can be equally as comical, she knows how to use transporters - or rather how to kill people using the transporters - and it would have at least given us a second high profile female crewman whose working relationship with Kirk could have been built upon in the sequel.

As long as she comes in as his yeoman, it should be as easy to introduce Rand in the sequel as it would have been to introduce Chekov as the fresh-faced navigator so I'm still hopeful.

Kyle AND Mr. Leslie would be cool. Leslie was in classic TOS episodes dating all the way back to 1965 and the second pilot. And kept on showing up all the way through Season 3. Almost no other background character on the old Enterprise could say that.

That's a good idea about Xon. I think it would be cool if they finally had him appear in canonical Trek. Orci and Kurtzman are fans, so hopefully an idea like that would be on their radar. Also, Robert April. I know in the new timeline, Pike is the first NCC1701 captain, but they can do whatever they want, its a clean slate. April could be still around, commanding another ship.

With Vulcan gone, the idea of a Vulcan who feels he has to let out his emotions to live among Humans has real potential. Might as well call him Xon...

And since the timeline's been changed ANYWAYS, have Spock and Xon be rivals and sometime-enemies squaring off for Kirk's loyalty and attention or something.

Too-shay. (I've spelled it out phonetically because I don't know how to put the line of the 'e'.)

On Lt. Arex, I liked the design of the character, except for the third leg. Four legs are at least a biological possibility, and (after seeing some of the hexapods in Avatar) I think they can be done in a believable way. But a three legged animal is unheard of in nature.

One of my favorite scenes in the comic League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, happens during the Martian Tripod invasion of Britain. Mr. Hyde (who in this story is a monstrous, super-strong, evil version of the Incredible Hulk) brings this fact to light while talking to an alien Tripod. "You wanna know why God never made three legged beastie?" he asks just before destroying one of the tripod's "feet". It promptly stumbles around off balance and falls over like a wounded giraffe.

If not four legs, then maybe give Arex a tail. A long, thick one that may be confused as a third leg by other characters based on the way he uses it.

I can't believe we're almost 6 pages in, and no one's said it:

Khaaaaaaaaaan! Hey, it could happen. What about a mirror universe Khan?

We've gone six pages without mentioning Khan because there are already a couple squillion threads on that subject.

nuSpock: As per new Starfleet Regulations, we are required to have a Tactical/Security Officer on the bridge. Thus, I would like to introduce you all to Ms. Janice Rand

That would be cool. I don't like the "Yeoman" thing. You can't make clerical work look cool and would give us an ACTION GIRL in the movie.

That's be nice, but what about Cupcake?

HARRY MUDD.

I'm sure someone's already said it...with the right actor...say, Oliver Platt...he could be a welcome addition to the next movie, even if he's only a secondary character and comic relief.

Definitely more females and not just for eye candy. Janice Rand and Christine Chapel for a start.

Bring back Commodore Mendez or Stocker as bureaucratic whipping-fodder for Kirk and Spock to deal with in at least one scene.

Oliver Platt as Mudd is an inspired idea. yeah, they need more chicks to balance out the cast. Chapel is a must for the next one. Probably Rand, too if they can find something interesting for her to do. Was watching WNMHGB last week and thought it might make a good story basis for the next movie, thereby allowing Mitchell and Dehner to appear. As much as some of you will hit me over the head, a reference to an aged T'Pol wouldn't be bad as a loose tie to Ent.

Cupcake needs some kind of chance at 'redemption' in the next film. How about we get to see him deck a Klingon to save Kirk's hide? :p

And if he gets taken out in the process, then we could have a Janice Rand take over as head of security?
