Notably missing characters that would be cool in the next movie.

That also brings up something else too. Most of Star Fleets cadet core is gone now. All lost at Vulcan. Those that perhaps would have been alive would certainly not survive the planets destruction. However at the end of the movie the auditorium is full? I would think recruitment would go down if nearly all the cadets lives were lost? Anyway.

Readin' the movie novelization, it specifies that only fourth-year cadets were called into service for the Vulcan alert.

So, think of it as a senior class trip, while the freshman, sophomores & juniors had to stay on campus.

:bolian:

And like most senior class trips, it ended in disaster...

:shifty:

nuSpock: As per new Starfleet Regulations, we are required to have a Tactical/Security Officer on the bridge. Thus, I would like to introduce you all to Ms. Janice Rand

That would be cool. I don't like the "Yeoman" thing. You can't make clerical work look cool and would give us an ACTION GIRL in the movie.

This is how I feel. I don't object to her being the captain's yeoman though (i.e. not an officer) since she can do that and still be security-trained, plus she can double as his personal security guard to 'protect' him from alien sluts in space bikinis. At least as his personal assistant it gives her a reason to be with him when the action goes down so she can get stuck in.

That would be a nice reversal from her being a damsel-in-fucking-distress every goddamn episode. That's pretty much why she was so annoying. Every monster, godlike entity, or evilKirk who came aboard the ship would either attack her or try to jump her. Or both. She seemed completly incapable to defend herself and wandered blindly into danger. Having her save Kirk's ass for once would be a nice change of pace.

Carol Marcus - well, she was in a draft of the first film.

Winona (technically missing outside the prologue) and George Kirk Jr.

Leslie - the coolest redshirt ever.

While not at all specified in the movie, perhaps it was only the cadets present in the hall at that time when the Admiral ordered their emergency activation and thusly the only ones of sufficient education to be any use on board a starship?

Remember when the Narada attacked San Francisco Bay, there were still cadets on the Academy campus.

that is how i saw it.
the cadets lost were those about to graduate anyway.

and enterprise being the biggest ship might have gotten more.

starfleet just saved earth so recruitment actually might just go up.

as for like to see..

kor,
a pre doomsday machine decker.
decker and kirk were very obviously friends and wouldnt have been suprised if decker had been another mentor to kirk.

gary mitchell..

Toss in a cameo by Matt Decker and his son Will while we're at it. We never saw them together in the classic timeline so why not show 'em again but this time flesh out their family relationship a little more?

Would it be out of line to point out that Matt and Will being father and son is not canon?

Not in the strictest sense. But some of the 1979-80 press materials for TMP as well as the basic attitude of the franchise's masters over the ensuing years say they are father and son and an early draft of TMP's script had Kirk or Will Decker mention the relationship.

More Lt. DeSalle("Squire of Gothos," "Arena," "This Side of Paradise," "Catspaw")while we're at it. He actually got more screentime than Kevin Riley did and I always disliked how they never revisited the character after the first episode of the second season.

Kevin Riley
Mr Kyle
Number One
Yeoman Rand
Yeoman Colt
Lee Kelso
Dr M'Benga
Hadley
Janice Rand
Christine Chapel
Harry Mudd
M'ress
Arex (done with CGI, of course)
Will and Matt Decker
Professor Daystrom
Garth Of Izar

I can keep coming up with TOS characters all day.

Also, I hope Greenwood comes back as Pike in the next one. He was cool. He doesn't have to become Sean Kenney in a wheelchair in this timeline, either. Even cooler.

From a story telling standpoint, there was no reason to have Chekov, Sulu, or even Scotty in there. Uhura was given a more substantial role, but I saw no reason why she should have the same name as the original character.
They were just there because JJ felt Star Trek HAD to have the "whole group." IMHO, without the same actors, there isn't any real reason to have them, unless they were genuinely germain to the plot.

Actually, when you put it that way, I agree with you. When I first heard the early rumours that this was going to Kirk and Spock's origin story, I thought it would be exactly that. The story of Kirk and Spock's first mission. That may actually have been a more interesting story as opposed to all the TOS gang meeting up all at once. Just watch TOS, they don't all meet at the same time. Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and Sulu did. Then McCoy and Uhura arrive later on, and finally Chekov at a later point.
If you are referring to the order in which they were introduced in TOS, that has nothing to do with anyone "arriving". In-universe, it only makes sense that they were all there on the ship on their five year mission, we just didn't happen to see Chekov for the first year, because for some reason he hadn't been assigned to his bridge post yet. And I don't think we ever actually had a canon story about how and when any of them met...

We did see Pike in a wheelchair at the end of the movie but that may have only been temporary? There are many characters that where in the series that weren't in the movie but. I'm thinking Rand might be a pretty good choice. She kind of represented the fresh face of Star Fleet (new crewman fresh ideas). In this timeline though all the crewman are 'new' to a degree so it would be hard to find a fresher face. Still Rand was a pretty big part of the series as a secondary character so she makes pretty good sense to me.

all those characters would be great in the next movie:techman:

I would love to see Matt Decker like some other people on this thread. Also I think Xon would be a welcome addition to the supporting cast, he could be on the bridge at one of the stations behind the command chair. He could be a executive science officer or a reserve for Spock. I think it would be nice to have Kevin Riley and definitely Kyle the transporter chief, they could easily throw a reference to him in the next movie. Perhaps we could see Governor Kodos as a possible villain. P.S. Harry Mudd would be an absolute no no for me, he was a clown of a villain, not worthy of being a true opponent of the Enterprise crew, he was just an excuse for some comedy.

In-universe, it only makes sense that they were all there on the ship on their five year mission,

How so? We do know there were a number of personel transfers throughout the series. Off the top of my head, in I, Mudd "Norman" claims to have transferred onto the ship within the past couple of weeks and no one questions that. And of course Dr. Piper was transferred off at some point after Where No Man Has Gone Before.

Anyway, there is no reason to assume everyone was assigned to the Enterprise right at the start of the five year mission. McCoy obviously wasn't there WNMHGB. And while we have to accept that Chekov was on board for Space Seed, he obviously wasn't there during Mudd's Women, since again in I, Mudd he has no idea who Harry Mudd is.

That's a good idea about Xon. I think it would be cool if they finally had him appear in canonical Trek. Orci and Kurtzman are fans, so hopefully an idea like that would be on their radar. Also, Robert April. I know in the new timeline, Pike is the first NCC1701 captain, but they can do whatever they want, its a clean slate. April could be still around, commanding another ship.
