Not only is Family Guy terrible but it's extremely offensive...

I love how people say that FG is pointless, plotless, unfunny and inane...but they liked the first 3 years!

What??

The show hasn't changed one bit. You've just gotten bored with it.

Or have you forgotten such early-season gems as 'insane Margo Kidder' or 'Peter Falls on the sidewalk and says "ow" for 45 seconds?' I must be missing the brilliance behind that one that you all seem to be remembering.

The show has always been about inane "un-funny" as being the joke. It's fine to not like it, but I'm amused that everyoe USED to like it, but somehow doesn't any more.

Agreed. I remember when many here were overly excited about FG's return and all they did was bash Simpsons saying FG was superior. Now all of a sudden FG sucks.:guffaw:

I like Family Guy but its later series years (post cancellation) do not quite match the first three years. Some of problems I see:

- There is a lack of heart to the show: the frequent episodes detailing the abuse towards Meg. Even Lois gets in her digs too. This tone did not really exist in the show's first three years. And it is now hateful. This is not funny. Yes, originally Meg could be the annoying whiney character, but she was a component of the show's story and humor. Now she is merely a prop that Peter and the others abuse.

- Stewie's morphing from devious future world mastermind to petulant metrosexual.

- Seth's showing his political colors in FG. And he is not usually funny or entertaining when he does. These comedies work best when nothing is sacred - a la South Park. Seth can get a little preachy at times.

And ironically, I do not mind the cut-aways and pop culture jokes - they are part of FG's style. I think it was a good thing that FG got a second chance.

Agreed 100%.

Meg isn't the greatest character even, and while I don't mind occasional jokes about the family not liking her, they just take it way overboard in the newer episodes. Stewie not trying to take over the world anymore is pretty disapointing, and Seth really does take the political jokes too far. I voted for Obama, but seeing Nazis wearing McCain Palin buttons was a little too extreme.

QFT!

Family Guy always sucked. That show was never funny.

And this is the problem. You guys expected the show to remain stagnant? The Simpsons, Flintstones, Beavis and Butthead etc. all went through changes during their runs. The art changed a little and characters attitudes changed a little. I watch the earlier FG and to me they are just not as funny. Stewie still has a devious take over the world mind, they just dont showcase it as much. Yes Meg has become more of a punching bag and brian is more pathetic at times. The thing is this is a satire and we shouldnt expect much consistency throughout the episodes.(ie. Everyone knowing or not knowing Stewie can talk)

I still like it, I still watch it, I still think it's funny (albeit in an extremely tasteless, offensive and juvenile manner). Yes, the writers have taken an approach akin to chucking every joke they come up with at the wall and seeing if it sticks, but that's always been their style, hasn't it?

Obviously there's a market for this program based on the ratings and box set sales, so there's a significant chunk of people out there who enjoy the random, and yes, very offensive humour of FG.

If the OP hates FG, fine, but why do I see these threads nearly every other month? I absolutely loathe reality television programs in just about every form, but I don't go around starting threads on how horrible and vacuous they are.

Oh and I'm not a mindless FG-defender, in a review thread of a recent episode in this forum I was pretty harsh, calling the episode "horrible" and stating that "I didn't laugh once. Not even a smile."

Funny enough, I'm at work right now and we have a Fox television fibre feed (for TV stations) showing...Family Guy! I Think I'll punch it up on the big monitor right now...
Well said.

I really don't see how people can take what's done on a cartoon so seriously. It's sad when fiction is taken as reality. I think it may explain the limited sense of humor.

As I said, exodus, would you laugh at jokes made about the actual Holocaust? There are nice cheeky references that are done by other shows that are in -- well funny tastes (but just as tactless, still funny because it is relevant).

I don't take cartoons seriously. I absolutely ADORE and love cartoons. That's all I ever really watch for the most part. Kim Possible, X-Men (we get re-runs here of that), My Life as a Teenage Robot, Fairly Oddparents, South Park, Invader Zim, Venture Brothers, Danny Phantom I watch a lot of cartoons.

Why do I watch Family Guy? I really don't. I watch the Simpsons but keep the television on for the most part as background noise when I'm doing stuff. If the plot looks interesting, I might check it out but rarely I do that even now. I had high hopes for the Road to Germany (the last two Roads were done okay).

Family Guy to me is a worse version of Marry with Children...

BTW we don't usually start one on Family Guy, it's usually the Simpsons. Family Guy has gotten a LOT worse since it's return and I don't know what the cause of this is. Either Fox is too afraid to corral McFarlane or Fox just doesn't give a crap about what it airs anymore.

It isn't taking things seriously, it's making fun of tragic events that are often understated or glossed over in society.
The Family Guy is FOX' highest rated show on Sunday, why should they worry?

Married w/ Children was another high rated show on FOX. It made Christina Applegate a sex symbol and house hold name & made Katie Segal a star, why would they worry?

Both these shows have a large mass public appeal, you just don't get it because your sense of humor isn't as broad and take cartoon based concepts very seriously, as shown by your other rant about the Transformers movie.

If it bothers you enough to post & rant about then, then you really are taking them too seriously. Honestly, grown adults don't sit around complaining about cartoons. Most have moved on to complaining about their rent or morgage.

I voted for Obama, but seeing Nazis wearing McCain Palin buttons was a little too extreme.

A little? I think it was a lot. I voted Obama, too. I think it was a highly childish, immature, over-the-top swipe that made him look like an idiot.

The fact that he got you to notice it and talk about it is exactly what makes the show still popular.

Even celebs rely on the Enquirer sometimes to keep them in the spot light.

Plus, FOX just signed him to a huge money making contract.
That idiot is a well paid man, isn't that the American dream?

Married With Children was a very smart and clever show that holds up today. Just because the characters are idiots doesn't mean the show is idiotic.

Meh, I found it pretty funny at first, but even rewatching old episodes that were my favs...ugh, they're just so pedestrian. It was never near the quality of Simpsons or SP, even at its peak. What little I saw of the post cancellation crap fell so flat I was amazed. Season 4 was terrible, and American Dad was just as flatly unfunny too. There were maybe 2 or 3 laughs in the whole damn 1st season (of AD).

American Dad has gotten better in quality and has carried along well. There are some episodes that have been outright horrible but there has been some that's been absolutely wonderful.

Yeah, Family Guy isn't as good as it used to be and I don't make a point of watching every week like I used to, but when I do catch an episode now and then there's usually a few laughs to be had.

Then again, I have a high tolerance for offensive humour. Family Guy has never done a joke I thought crossed the line. Which probably meaens I don't have a line
