Noob to star trek and forum

Good evening every one!

I am very new to the forum, so forgive me if I am posting in the wrong area.
As well as being new to the forum, I am quite new to star trek. Almost a year ago me and my boyfriend got very ill and bed ridden, and binged watched Voyager (lack of Netflix shows) and fell in love.

After Voyager we watched Next generation. (Then tried origional series, but struggled). Tried DS9, partner likes it, but I find it slow and boring (sorry if that offends any one) and now on Enterprise. We are finding Enterprise, uhm, very strange so far. (We are now in xindi space).
To the point, me and my partner have endless questions. But I think for now (and if it's ok) I will ask a light question, that is confusing us.

Question: After watching Discovery (and understanding Discovery is meant to be before original series?) The federation goes to war with the Klingon Empire. However we were under the impression the first war was with the the Romulans? Are we completely wrong or are we missing some thing? A quick Google search suggests the federation went to war with the Romulans (and thus that created the federation).

Quick note guys. We are currently watching Enterprise, if my question gives spoilers to Enterprise, please just tell me to shut up

The war with the Romulans was never depicted on screen, in the chronology it's shortly after Enterprise ended, but well before Discovery, which is set 100 years after Enterprise.

And no you're not wrong. The was a very big war with the Romulans. That takes place several years after the Enterprise. And not to spoil anything, but some of the story events you'll see in season 4, are sort of 'lead-up' to the war -- like think in terms of 1930s Europe. (In fact the plan was for season 5 to jump ahead a few years to the start of the war. They had a new ship and everything ready.)

Discovery takes place about a century after Enterprise and a few years before the Original Series. The war with the Klingons is much smaller and thus less historically noteworthy.

While I am here CorporalClegg you mentioned literary. Is star trek literature worth a read? And if so where should one start?

It's a mixed bag - in that sort of fast-food, easily consumable way. (Many books can be read C2C in a single night.)

I was really into it when I was younger, but just don't have time [existentially speaking] for it now. Some of it's really good, some of it's not so much. If you're an avid reader then I say go for it, but maybe wait until you've digested a bit more of the TV stuff first. For one thing, the books are littered with references and call-backs, not to mention spoilers. But if you stay strictly to the Enterprise relaunch after you're done with the show, you should be okay.

I have heard that allot. My partner enjoys it, but I find it to political? And just far to situational and boring.
We will be going back to it after Enterprise.
(Also Ferengi are gross, and I am not to sure I can stomach the Ferengi in DS9)

We have 2 Trek authors that are regular members and active contributors to this discussion board.

I like how you like Andorians but only now are watching the series that features them the most. Enterprise is at the bottom of my list of Trek series, so the Andorians are a big redeeming point for me for that series. I really would like to see more.

The Klingons destroyed a third of Starfleet, conquered Starbase one and came close to conquering Earth too. It was a huge deal and only "less historically noteworthy" because it was added into the continuity 50 years later and thus doesn't have any reference in prior works as the Romulan Wars do, which go all the way back to "Balance of Terror"

DS9 gets really really good season 4 onwards.

As for the novels theres sooooo many of them, some are middling, sone are fantastic. but you might like to start with the voyager relaunch series starting with Homecoming.

My rule of thumb is that as soon as Sisko shaves his head and grows a goatee, and Worf shows up, then DS9 for me becomes the best Trek series.

The Andorians first appeared in TOS, but then were forgotten for the whole TNG/DS9/VOY era, apparently because one of the producers thought the antennae were goofy-looking.

You can also glimpse them occasionally in the TOS movies.
