Sure, Bond the series has long been jumping on different bandwagons, but there was a time when it was a trend setter, rather than a follower. When it had the Flintstones devoting a feature-length cartoon inspired by Bond, when tv shows like Man from UNCLE and Get Smart and comics like Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. among others came to life eating his dust.
But today more than ever, there really isn't anything fresh about Daniel Craig Bond, except it being a new coat of paint on an old country house. When the Matrix and John Wyck are true trendsetters and your primo franchise is not, Eon has a problem.

It’s called Spymania and that died out with the 60s. The fact that it’s persisted since the 70s in spite of no longer being as big of a deal as it was in the 60s is not bad. How many other franchise films have as many titles as Bond? Probably Godzilla, but beyond that it’s very scant. You could say the MCU, but that’s a collection of different title characters rather than a singular one like Bond.

Whenthe Matrix and John Wyck are truetrendsetters and your primo franchise is not, Eon has a problem.

People have been saying this for 50 years now whenever there was a big new action franchise taking the spotlight from Bond.

Smokey and the Bandit, Indiana Jones, Rambo, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Mission: Impossible, Jason Bourne, Marvel, etc.

Vin Diesel set up xXX as the new Bond of the 21st century, claiming that James Bond was outdated by 2002 because young audiences couldn’t relate to a man in a suit. DIE ANOTHER DAY then blew xXx out of the water. And to have it be THAT Bond film outgross your effort is pretty embarrassing.

So this narrative you’re trying to paint as something unique for Craig’s run is not novel.

I can still remember when True Lies showed that Bond was outdated and on the way out...a year later Goldeneye arrived.

The other thing to factor in is that most of those other franchises are finite because they all rely on a star rather than a character. When they tried to make a Bourne film without Matt Damon it flopped, and however successful the Mission Impossible franchise is, the chances are it'll end when Cruise can't hack the exertion anymore.

The John Wick films rely on Reeves so again, once he hangs up his guns it'll end (yes I know there's a wider universe there with the Continental series but that's not the same thing). And the Matrix? The original film was seminal I suppose but it's been diminishing returns ever since, and the only reason it's come back now? Because they've got Reeves back. (see also Indy)

Of course there are exceptions but, aside from reinventing itself for the times, the best thing the Bond franchise ever did was convince people that someone else could play 007, which elevates the franchise to a unique club (Dr Who, Batman, Sherlock Holmes etc) and mostly that comes down to one man, if Sir Roger Moore hadn't hit the ground running in LALD would the franchise have lasted? We'll never know I guess but it seems doubtful.

People say that the Bond actors owe it all to Connery, but they really owe it to Moore for making it possible to even escape Connery’s shadow. Whoever will be the next 007 will undoubtedly need to be different enough from Craig to be able to be seen a different light, the same way Craig was seen differently from Brosnan.

Yup, the same is true for Patrick Troughton and Doctor Who. William Hartwell deserves all the credit for establishing the iconic character but without Troughton, we would not still be getting new Doctors today.

I will finally get around to rating this since i saw it last week.
10. I know few will agree. My list of favorite bond movies is almost always not on par with anyone else.
My top five in no particular order:
LIving Daylights, FYEO, OHMSS, FRWL, and now No Time to Die.

Even without, or despite, all the callbacks in the film to OHMSS (and oddly, to FYEO), it would have stood on its own. An aging bond no longer able to supersede the world around him, one he's saved a few times but may be having trouble relating to now culminates in drama on the small scale. In the end he's making sure his lover and child survive. Sailing into Cuba on a private sailboat, the breakdown of the old land rover, grovelling to Lucifer i mean Lyutsifer to buy a little time, and oh fuck if a few awesome minutes of Paloma. We need more Paloma. Fuck the reboots, give us a Paloma and Nomi franchise.

Where was I. Beautiful cinematography. I would have probably given it a 8 just for bringing back the Aston Vantage, my favorite Bond Car. Was a beautiful ending hearing Satch singing at the end, even if I went to see it with a date who snored through the whole thing and kept kicking the chair in front of her (first dates can be memorable, but so can last ones).

my petty complaint: Mallory seemed smarter than to make a programmable bioweapon that could be reprogrammed while maintaining it was designed to be safe. Still everyone has their flaws, and maybe after having so many Mi6 employees go rogue in the series it seemed safer to rely on.. wait on an Mi6 scientist who went rogue. Still, don't think Judy Dench's M would have done it in either of her continuities.

You'd think so, but the problem is they spread exponentially. Everything he touches is infected with them. They'd make their way to Lea Seydoux and his daughter quickly enough, even if they kill the ones he is carrying.

Too bad they can't be knocked out with an emp blast. Like from the watch he's wearing.

Someone on twitter posed the question if nanobites could be destroyed by an emp blast (he was good enough to follow the question with “don’t spoil it - if you know why I’m asking, you know”) but the answers were inconclusive

In this specific case they must be hardened against them. It doesn't affect Bonds "smart blood" nanites either, and he triggers the watch a couple times after he's injected with them.

Robots need a power source. Unless they have some kind of magic thermovoltaic system they eventually stop working. In any case the liver and other filtering organs would eventually do their job and get rid of them. Of course few livers have been through as much trauma and hard work as James Bond’s

Fictional robots, fictional universe. In this case, they're getting their power source and avoiding the body's filtration system somehow (it appears they actually live on the skin/other objects and only "infect" those with the matching DNA profiles). They just don't bother to say how.

It’s ironic that the film ends with Craig Bond practicing the most overt social distancing by ordering the Royal Navy to bomb the facility.

I remember when SPECTRE raided the MI6 lab and grabbed the bio weapon I whispered to my mom “I think this is how COVID started”.

Ahh, petit colon, petit colon...vraiment, la seule retorque est qu'il faut tout simplement accepter le manque d'effort dans la scenarisation des Bond malgre leur faiblesse progressive au travers des annees.

Et qu'on peut refuser tous les arguments par Diesel et Cohen a regard la connection de Bond et du jeune public, parce que seul l'argent compte malgre que les 2 sont au plus mediocres. Compris!

Tellement lassant...mais jamais tu n'offriras un seul argument prouvant la force et superiorite des scripts contrairement a tout ce que je dis, parce que bien sur c'est au-dela ton etoffe.

Your argument is that Bond hasn’t been the trendsetter it used to be since the 60s. I don’t think anyone is disputing that.

The '60s trend of cheap "Eurospy" Bond knockoffs was rather amusing. Some of them were actually pretty entertaining.

I tried watching Matt Helm. It’s kind of amazing Dino got bigger paychecks off of that than what Connery was getting from Bond.
