No Man's Sky

I've had that one on my list for awhile now. So, it's good? It does look really interesting. Almost Trek-like.

It is good but not finished, so be prepared for things to radically change (generally for the better) with each release. It's not a game about beautiful vistas the way NMS is, but instead about careful (and often dangerous) exploration, especially outside of your ship.

That's good. I've often found that the hype surrounding NMS was in its beauty, rather than its content. Sounds like it would be right up my alley. I'll pick it up eventually.

Anyone know what Elite Dangerous is like? I'm half tempted to get that.

It's more hardcore than NMS, but less so than something like EVE Online. If you like being set out with a little ship and having to figure out how to make money so you can get bigger and better ships, that's what E:D is about. There's also an ongoing storyline but I never paid much attention to that.

@Ronald Held how are you enjoying No Man's Sky these days?

I'm honestly curious because most people fell off of playing it in the long run.
It has not the same impact as when I started, but it is still interesting to land on an unknown planet for the first time. I am spending more time on my base, than before. I cannot say when I would give it a long break.

Kinda (nope)

anecdotally, not a lot of people care enough to check out even significantly sized updates to NMS at this point

cool that they're adding things, too bad most of the installed base has deprecated and will never see it

Finally did the patching. Many interfaces have changed too much. Lost all of my base managers. The system I was exploring lost the planet names, but kept the flora and fauna until I landed on a planet and had to start on it from scratch. Rolled back the game and started in a new system. Hired three managers and may start on the nearest planet to the space station.
Not impressed by this update, as I am not taking the Atlas or galactic center path.

I finally picked this up when it was on sale. Played for a couple hours. Pretty chill game, albeit with a terrible UI.

I picked it up, played it for an hour. Got bored of trying to beat hypothermia by running back to the ship as I attempted to find and mine what I needed to repair my ship. Average time until hypothermia sets in? 2 minutes exposure. Time to nearest supply of what I desperately needed? 5 minutes, on open plain. That was the dayside. Nighttime gave me less than 1 minute before becoming a frozen corpsicle. The crappy UI made it difficult at times, too. So, I decided it wasn't my cup of tea. Got a refund through Steam. I guess I'm not a No Man's Sky person. :(

Yeah, one thing the game really sucks at is putting you on training wheels to start with--like any modern game worth a shit does. I guess you can't really buy it at the discounted price again, but if you ever do grab it in the future, see if you can reroll to a less shitty planet if you start out on a bad one.

My first planet was hot but not devastatingly so. I had to keep my heat protection up but it lasted quite a while, like probably 10 minutes at a stretch before recharging. And if I took shelter in caves, I didn't need the protection. I thought that was a nice touch.

But if you start off on a terribly hostile planet, you are just screwed because a) you don't know what you're doing yet and b) even if you did, you don't have the equipment to cope with it yet, either.

My second planet doesn't seem to have a hostile environment, but it is crawling with acid-spitting spider-crab assholes.

Bottom line, this game should never have been priced at more than $30. Its quality is not worthy of a $60 price tag and whoever decided it was should be fired.
