No longer deep space, renaming DS9

In the “Rebels” trilogy by Dafydd ab Hugh it was named “Emissary’s Torch” or something like that when the Bajoran’s took it over for a brief time while Sisko and the Starfleet crew went into the Gamma Quadrant for a few weeks. (I’m not near my books right now so I can’t check.)

Emissary's Sanctuary.

Eh, I always considered a Deep Space station to be a starbase that wasn't in Federation territory at the time it was established, but probably just kept the designation if that situation ever changed.

Otherwise, I'd call it Starbase Super-Omega Ultra 42.

There was a TNG episode, I think it was 'Parallels' where they referenced Deep Space Five as a strategic Federation location that was being monitored by the Cardassians. That tells me that at some point, DS5 was some out of the way whatever outside UFP, but kept the name even as it gained importance.

So, I'd just keep it as DS9.

If nothing else, it would show as a tracker for how far the Federation expands as it goes along, like, "Oh, yeah, that used to be deep space, but fuck it, now this is Deep Space 28."

What's funny is that no one ever asked the Bajorans what they thought of having one of their own stations referred to as essentially the boonies. Like, "you guys are so far out in the sticks, but we're gonna take over anyway and give your station a name that's a slap in the face with how we view you."

How is it a slap in the face to say Bajor is far from the Federation?

I'm sure plenty of radicals were furious that a Bajoran station which was supposedly only under Federation administration was immediately and exclusively given a Federation name at all, rather than a Bajoran one. But I see no logical reason why the phrase 'deep space' should be considered at all insulting by itself.

Well, we did find out what they thought of it...

BASHIR: I didn't want some cushy job or a research grant. I wanted this. The farthest reaches of the galaxy. One of the most remote outposts available. This is where the adventure is. This is where heroes are made. Right here, in the wilderness.
KIRA: This wilderness is my home.
BASHIR: Well, I, I, I didn't mean.
KIRA: The Cardassians left behind a lot of injured people, Doctor. You can make yourself useful by bringing your Federation medicine to the natives. Oh, you'll find them a friendly, simple folk.
