A transition took place from the beginning of DS9 to the end. It started out as a backwater station on the geopolitical edge of anything the Federation cared about. But with the Dominion War, the station became the front line for action. Is a station named "Deep Space" forever, even when the borders expand way beyond it?

What would you rename Deep Space 9 if it could no longer be considered a "deep space" outpost?

    Some ideas:
    - Six-Legged Space Lady
    - Prophets' Promenade
    - Quark's (if he buys the whole place out)
    - Rom's (if he buys out Quark and gets credit for the minefield)
    - Cardi-free
    - Alpha Quadrant Welcome Center
    - Starbase Still Standing
    - Bouncer for the Prophs
    - Sisko was here

I'll go with Admiral Whatley's: the Bicycle Wheel.

What's funny is that no one ever asked the Bajorans what they thought of having one of their own stations referred to as essentially the boonies. Like, "you guys are so far out in the sticks, but we're gonna take over anyway and give your station a name that's a slap in the face with how we view you."

At least we would know the station's anthem (Come to Quark's, Quark's is fun, Come right now, Don't walk, Run!)

That's definitely how imperial powers operate, and that's how a lot of Bajorans viewed the Federation, so I'm sure that kind of unilateralism and Earth-centrism didn't help matters.

But the Federation isn't an imperial power. At the least they should have had some consideration for the natives that they were trying to appease.

Whether they allow a local/native name to stand, the station would always have some sort of designation that describes where it fit into the architecture of Starfleet: it is distant, it is outside the Federation, and it is a "gate/toll booth" to another part of the galaxy. United States Indo-Pacific Command may not appeal to Koreans or Japanese, but it is useful for the US Armed Forces.

I was referring mainly to perception vs. reality, but the Federation wasn't above thinking about things in terms of territory and expansion.
TROI: Remember, they have a significantly less advanced technology than ours. They only achieved warp drive last year.
CRUSHER: And the Federation Council decided to make them a protectorate so quickly?
PICARD: In view of our losses to the Borg and the Dominion, the Council feels we need all the allies we can get these days.

In the “Rebels” trilogy by Dafydd ab Hugh it was named “Emissary’s Torch” or something like that when the Bajoran’s took it over for a brief time while Sisko and the Starfleet crew went into the Gamma Quadrant for a few weeks. (I’m not near my books right now so I can’t check.)

Star Station Bokai, as noted in Sisko's farewell video he had made as a joke, before leaving for Cardassia...
