Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

Nintendo can't even make a port of a game come out at launch? I mean really Nintendo.

You're right. Every game should come out on the same day so that people can spend a few thousand dollars at once.

Maybe they want to spread things out a bit after launch. Maybe they wanted to focus resources on other (new) games instead.

Really, at this point it seems like you're complaining for the sake of complaining.

I'm sorry, I would like more than one launch title. How dare I demand that we get more than one launch title and of a port at that!

Nintendo shares are now down nearly 6%.

Overall, I think it was a decent presentation. The first half dragged a bit because of the focus on the hardware and them showing off the motion control stuff trying to call back to the Wii. I think that was a mistake.

But it picked up once they got into showing off the games. They could (probably should) have shown more. Expand that trailer right at the end (not the Zelda one, the multi-game trailer) more and tell us what those games are so we don't have to go searching for which ones were shown.

There are at least 5 games I saw that I would get for the Switch, though only a couple of them have dates/timeframes for launch.

The only game that interested me was Super Mario Odyssey. Everything else was either a Wii U port (including Zelda) or an Indie game that will come to the PS4 and PC anyway. I've been holding off on a PS4 because the Switch really excited me, but I think I'll buy a PS4 now and wait a year or two for the Switch to build up a halfway decent library. It's the Wii U all over again.

It was meant to increase sells for the masses, not just Nintendo fanboys/girls. There was no shock and awe like their needed to be, It looked like a fancy Wii with the amount of arm waving there was.

But worse, I love Nintendo and I think it will be their downfall. And after watching it part of me hopes they do go third party.

Anybody get a pre-order in yet?

Wal-Mart and Best Buy are taking them now, and I got mine in for Best Buy :)

Obviously not preordering the Wii U 2 but smart move. Walmart seems to be canceling and moving dates around and sending odd emails.

I know you weren't impressed, but I bet this thing has a decent library in one years time.

Sure, just like the Wii U. I'll take that bet. It's clear that in your eyes Nintendo could do no wrong. This was an epic failure to launch a system. I was so looking forward to it and it was a huge letdown, and Nintendo stockholders now it.

Mario and Splatoon will probably be the only Nintendo titles exclusive for the Switch between now and March 3, 2018. That is a mess. You get Zelda, that's also on a Wii U, A Mario Kart port, Splatoon 2 and Mario in a year. (If they are not delayed.) Until the summer the only games for it are on the Wii U too! Might be fine for other systems but Nintendo really needs to prove themselves to show fans, and more importantly developers that they still have it. After last night I don't think they do. Maybe if they just spent a little more time showing off ice cubes in a glass. It's clear Nintendo gave up on the Wii U a long time ago so what exactly have they been working on the last couple years?

The idea and look is great, but Nintendo needs to move on from the stupid wiggle waggle controllers and focus on games first.

I'm wondering why people are supposed to be excited about a port of a six-year-old game coming to the system.

Zelda will move consoles but damn, it's always a bad sign when you're touting ports as launch titles. You use ports to fill out a library, not generate buzz.

Pricing for extra controllers:

THE CONTROLLERS
The detachable Joy-Con controllers have a pretty silly name, and hopefully we’ll just start calling them Switch Controllers before too long. For now, though, Joy-Con it is. (Per Nintendo, the plural of Joy-Con appears to be “Joy-Con.”)

You can also use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, which will go for $69.99. You can buy a second set of Joy-Con for $79.99. Individual Joy-Con go for $49.99. They ain’t cheap.

WTF...
The prices are high compared to the PS4 and the XB1...
It's nice they get a Shin Megumi Tensei game, those are great RPGs...

^ Given the amount of tech inside the JoyCons for all that motion control and force feedback stuff they were talking about last night, I'm not overly surprised.

Also, general FYI - there's a Fire Emblem focused Nintendo Direct planned for next week on the 18th.

Mario Kart 8 isn't that old, didn't it come out in 2013?

But still. What has nintendo been developing for the last few years as they ignored the Wii U? People are like "There are rumours of Pikmin 4 and Animal Crossing and this and that. I think it will be a good year". And I'm like "I think you are crazy." Nintendo will probably only release a few games this year, no way AC and Pikmin 4 come out before summer of 2018. Because if they were Nintendo should have shown a teaser trailer of them.

Some how in an hour Nintendo killed all buzz the Switch had going for it.

There isn't tech in the other controllers? It's $80 PLUS $30 more for a charging station thing. And the base holder is $90 if you need an extra? Is Nintendo smoking crack?! It's a piece of plastic that doesn't do anything.

This graf sums up my feelings:

What worries me is that that the pressure these teams will be operating under is intense. Nintendo wants Switch to synthesize its handheld and home console offerings. It also wants it to bring its casual and hardcore customers together. And, going by the pricing, it wants it all to happen now and make huge piles of money on the double - or else. I worry that it's too much for this machine to bear, and that it won't be given a chance to develop its own personality, or play to its strengths. More than that, I worry that the threadbare slate and eye-watering pricing will be off-putting, even - especially - to the diehard Nintendo fans who've bought half of these games before. Their loyalty, it seems, will be squeezed for every last drop, and in doing so it will be sorely tested.

Switch seems like it will be a fine console, but they're invoking market leader pricing in a segment where they simply... aren't. And trying to relive the Wii's success does not bode well that Nintendo has figured out a path to the future.

If the message is "convergence of home and handheld consoles," well, that's cute, but that just simplifies your business. What does it give to your customers? With so many options for video games these days, why buy a Switch over a PS4, Xbone, or a tablet? Nintendo didn't offer a compelling answer to this question.

I do hope that the console does well, sells plenty of units, and builds a strong library. The Vita eventually did well enough for me to justify buying one, and I don't regret that at all. But I hope it doesn't take the Switch quite so long to find its footing, otherwise Nintendo's days as a hardware manufacturer will soon be at an end.
