Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

Yeah, I think a lot of people are missing that Nintendo clearly intends for the Switch to be the successor to both the Wii U and the 3DS.

I'm still looking forward to the Switch, but the paid online service has me really concerned. I don't play games online much, but occasionally I like to load up MK8 and hop online to race. This happens maybe once a month at best. I'm not going to shell out for an online service for some casual gaming that doesn't get used that much.

I'm not the biggest Zelda fan so i'm a little underwhelmed by the launch despite the Switch being released on my birthday. The limited range of launch titles along with the fact that Switch's equivalent of Virtual Console won't launch until later this year makes me think the Switch will make a very nice Christmas gift instead of an incredibly tepid launch item. I won't be pre-ordering, i'll wait.

I do have a question regarding the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - can that be used when playing mobile? In other words, can the controller interface with the tablet or is the pro controller exclusively for TV use only?

I've had some of the treehouse stuff on today on the other monitor while I work and a lot of the stuff aren't things that really appeal to me personally. Given the dates for the stuff that does I might sit this out a while and maybe just pick up that Zelda title on the Wii U for now.

I'm OK with the art style of that Zelda game but I'm not sure about that gauzy film that seems to be over the picture. Gives it a dreamy quality but I think it might get annoying quick. I don't know if that's done more for artistic effect or to cover up graphic shortcomings.

I'm not thrilled about the paid online either. I use it in my share of games but how they have it set up is off putting.

I'm personally fine with the online service as the paid perks don't really "sell" the service. I'm fine with having eshop access with Virtual Console purchases. Plus, the free game per month gimmick is ambiguous with respect to the one month access. Does it download and erase itself or is it access via stream only? If the latter, that undermines the portability aspect of Switch.

Yep, still no universal store!

I think it's silly that I would need to pay to visit someone else's town in a theoretical Animal Crossing.

I think the game download is a temp download, but an actual download. So you can play on the go and then at the end of the month it deletes itself. But that isn't based on anything besides logic which Nintedo doesn't always seem to go with.

Yep and it makes little sense. I like that Sony at least lets people keep the games for as long as they have the service. At least it makes the cost for it a bit more logical.

Sure, just like the Wii U. I'll take that bet. It's clear that in your eyes Nintendo could do no wrong. This was an epic failure to launch a system. I was so looking forward to it and it was a huge letdown, and Nintendo stockholders now it.

That's fair, but in my defense I legitimately liked what I saw. Yeah, Arms looks a little silly, and I'm weary of the paid online. I'm hoping that because it's a paid service, that Nintendo is putting effort into it, but I'm purely on a wait and see attitude right now. If online works great, and the games are there, this might replace the 360 as the console me and my girlfriend use to play each other online.

I wouldn't say I believe they can do no wrong though. The original Wii is actually the first Nintendo console that made me jump ship and check out the competition (in this case the 360, as I mentioned earlier). I don't regret that purchase, and I don't regret leaving the Wii behind. But I feel good about the Switch, as long as there's enough games for me to enjoy, and so far there appears to be, it will be a worthy purchase in my eyes.

This precisely sums up my position. There's too much focus on the hardware and gimmick on Nintendo's part and not enough attention paid to the games for 2017. Just look at the launch line-up. Once you're done playing Zelda, what next? You won't have Virtual Console for a few months.

Switch has until December.

Which is my problem. Does anyone play the 3DS with the 3D on? No. Nintendo made great games and that gimmick is there in the background (literally) but can be ignored in favor of great games.

Wii U failed because it had no games. Switch seems to think Zelda, Splatoon and Mario are enough for the first year, it's not. This needs to be a big huge deal and Nintendo dropped the ball.

Also 1 2 Switch should be free, I mean really. That's just common sense Nintendo lacks.

You don't need to defend that you like it, I'm glad someone does. I have a 'friend' who is like "All my friends love it!" and thought I was in the minority. But then I brought up the stock drop. I had hope Nintendo knew what they did wrong and was moving forward with the teaser.... nope. That makes me sad. But I'm glad you like.

I've been doing some more reading, watching some more YouTube videos and doing some more thinking.

I will now go as far as saying that Nintendo have totally dropped the ball. When the very first 3DS was launched, I was underwhelmed by the selection of launch titles. By comparison, the 3DS' launch is outstanding compared to the Switch.

Seriously, this is Switch for 2017 (unless there are surprises ahead):

There are some terrific game in there that I look forward to playing. But again, you are looking at 2017.

Yeah, same for me. If I ended up buying the Wii U I'll definitely end up buying the Switch. Nintendo just needs a year or two to build a compelling library. 2017 is going to be a rough year for Nintendo.

A set of joy-con($80) with a frame($30) will be $110, almost twice as much as a second controller for the PS4/XB1 or even the Switch Pro-controller...
So a console and a second controller will be between $370-$410, add in the cost of 1 or 2 launch games...
A secondary Dock for in your bedroom will be $90...
No pricing for games yet?
It looks to be more expensive than the PS4/XB1 for a gimmicky underpowered console...

Joel, we are getting more games than that. LEGO City Undercover is being ported from Wii U to all the consoles in the spring.

Rincewiend the games are $60, well at least Zelda is $60.

But both of these are things that should have been talked about during the event. Instead we get 5 minutes of ice dropping into a glass. I wonder how the Joy-con (Wiimote) will react to Nintendo dropping the ball... again.

I really don't get the prices for the things. Some fans are even buying two systems because the console itself is only like $60 if you separate the things. I mean the dock, THAT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING, is $90?!?

Yes people will buy it for Zelda and Mario, but really if I had $400 to spend I'd be getting a PS4 because it has games, it comes with games and cheaper controllers.

Wow, Skyrim didn't even merit a logo.

The Nintendo Switch! Porting games you loved since 2011!

Skyrim
LEGO Undercover
Mario Kart 8

System sellers baby!

Looked a bit around on Dutch sites, the price here is €329, which is around $350 right now, accesories are same amount but with a € for the $, so €50 for a single joycon...
And on every site the systems are sold out...
*shakes head*
