Niners Unite...around Babylon 5!

yeah but if you watched entire episode you realized that
G'kar is not going anywhere. Only Vir did.

And Dr. Franklin addiction story...yeah very unusual and bold move from producers.

And hold tight ! You are aproaching really but really good episodes. Everything goes Level Two. I am eagerly waiting your reviews and replies about coming episodes. It is like watching entire series first time from fresh perspective. Waiting your next episode reviews and reply, see ya..

It's great to see some life in this thread again. I kinda envy people who are new to B5. I'd like to see it for the first time all over again. But rewatching it always seems to reveal something new.

Good to know you're enjoying the show, Tom.

Actually, I should begin posting in this thread again as I recently started watching where I left off a while back. I'm in the middle of season 3 now...my favorite season!

Next episode is Sic Transit Vir though...not one of my favorites.

Maybe I'll just watch Severed Dreams again. :D

Delenn rocks!

Best Episode Ever! :D

I really ought to pick up my rewatching schedule, too. So many shows to watch...so little time... :scream:

*** waves to PKTG ***

Yes, it is the best episode ever. IMO, the best episode in all of scifi.

I could watch that Big Space Battle all day.

I think each time I watch that episode, I rewind the battle from the beginning through when Delenn comes in ready to kick some ass 4 or 5 times. I love watching that whole thing!

I think if I were Sheridan, I'd have fallen in love with her the very second that jump point opened.

I can never watch that episode without watching that scene at least half a dozen times. It's simply brilliant.

Maybe that's why I can recite the dialogue in that scene by heart.

^ Teehee.

I can too.

Or, at least I can recite Delenn's lines, anyway.

She was SO not messin' around.

Just watched A Day In The Strife.

Very interesting episode. We have G'Kar leaving B5 to return to the homeworld, Vir leaving to Minbar, and Dr Franklin addicted to stims. I'm a little worried how much more we'll be seeing of G'Kar and Vir, two of my favourite characters, but I'm sure something will happen to bring them back. Also, a character going through an addiction is a very brave thing to write about and JMS is handling it very well so far.

the next episode, Passing Through Gethsemane, is one of my favorites (my very favorite, Intersections in Real Time does not come till season 4).

anyway, you are rapidly approaching the absolute crescendo in TV scifi, namely, the Point of No Return/Severed Dreams combo.

i wish i could watch it all again - for the first time :(
but it's enough to know that others are enjoying it too :)

My wife & I have been re-watching the series from its inception. We just completed "And All My Dreams Torn Asunder", the only episode directed by Goran Gajic, the husband of Mira Furlan (Delenn).

Those of you who are new to the oft-lamented 5th season... there are still gems here and there. I'm not sure which season of DS9 would be comparable. That is to say, was there a season of DS9 that you felt you'd rather just forget, but still had episodes that made it worthwhile after all?

Good to see you in here, Neroon! :)

I'm not sure if DS9 has a season 5 equivalent...partly because DS9 never had to go through what JMS had to go through...thinking they were done after season 4, and then having to figure out how to make season 5 work.

I think the closest DS9 comes is season 1, because while it contains alot of character development and setup like B5 season 1, it is not as strong (especially on second viewing) because there is none of the foreshadowning in DS9 season 1 that makes B5 season 1 so special.

I think if I were to rate the 5 seasons of B5 and the 7 seasons of DS9 together, it would come out looking like this:

1. B5 season 3
2. DS9 season 6
3. B5 season 4
4. DS9 season 7 (although pretty much a tie with #3)
5. B5 season 2
6. DS9 season 5
7. DS9 season 4
8. DS9 season 3
9. B5 season 1
10. DS9 season 2 (although pretty much a tie with #9)
11. DS9 season 1
12. B5 season 5

Of course, your mileage may vary. ;)

^^
Interesting listing the seasons like that. I'd probably list them this way:

1. DS9 season 7 (eps as great as S6 but overall less clunkers)
2. DS9 season 6 (some of the show's best eps but too many clunkers for no. 1)
3. DS9 season 5 (could be the most consisten season; "only" place three because the 'excellent's here aren't quite on the level of the 'excellent's in the last two seasons)
4. B5 season 3 (B5's most consistent and engaging season - makes you just want to keep on watching; tons of payoff as well as set up)
5. DS9 season 4 (this is when DS9 really took off for me; very consisten season with many great to excellent eps - 'The Visitor' is on one level with season 6 and 7's 'excellents')
6. B5 season 4 (less consistent than S3 - I remember it being a little weaker in the middle; I've already stated my take on the ending of the war ;))
7. B5 season 2 (clear improvement over S1 IMHO, focuses well on building from start to finish, producing a great starting point for S3)
8. DS9 season 2 (seasons 1 - 3 of DS9 IMO can't touch season 4 - 7 but season 2 is the best of the bunch - very consistent, building lots of material for the future)
9. DS9 season 3 (far more bumpy ride than season 2 but with some good to great material to make it worthwhile)
10. DS9 season 1 (a lot of it is 'meh' but it's got an amazing start and finish with good eps in between)
11. B5 season 1 (still has too much of a Trek feel to it IMHO though slowly develops its own style plus many things that seem like your typical Trek one offs DO return in a big way - starting like this was risky, I think)
12 B5 season 5 (though that's tentative since I'm not quite through - much is summed up with a feeling of a lack of direction as well as a vocal "Forget Byron!" :D; I realize the problems JMS had leading up to this but I do think there was enough material to tell more good stories i.e. there are some good to very good stories here but it's not nearly as focused as other seasons)

My mileage - please don't slam me for having three seasons of DS9 in the top three places! :D

In any case, I'm really glad I'd only ever seen B5 entirely once before AND years ago. It was almost like watching a new show which was great fun.

Just harking back to Neroon's question about a comparable season in DS9: I suppose the one that gets closest to what you describe is S3. It's just an incredibly bumpy ride but there's too much good stuff and important build up to say I'd rather forget about it.
Let's put it this way: There are seasons I wish had been shorter. The most prominent ones in my mind are seasons 3 and 6. Season 6 maybe even a little bit more because the ups an downs are REALLY tough. You've got amazing episodes and such incredibly crappy episodes in one season at a point during the show where you can't help but think: "What on earth were they thinking?!?". Or what I usually said back then: "Oh, Ira...." *slaps forehead*

You know, I was just thinking it's a shame that there's not another sci-fi show on tv as good as and in parallel to nuBSG - it would be the 90's with B5 and DS9 all over again only that I'd enjoy it much more because I've become more open minded :D

Thanks for posting that! I was hoping others would 'jump on the bandwagon' and post their rankings. I think it's interesting to see...especially since most folks posting in this thread are big fans of both shows.

It's pretty hard to rank the seasons, IMO. Especially since a couple of them are so close (I added commentary to those that are). I am still debating between season 7 of DS9 and season 4 of B5...I change my mind every fifteen minutes, they are that close! The War For Earth rocks....but then, you can't beat episodes like what we saw in the final chapter of DS9.

I'll say this also - the second half of season 5 of B5 is ALOT better than the first half. I hate Byron - in fact, for as long as I've been a B5 fan, I've never met a fan who LIKED him. And I'm not happy about the direction they took Lennier either. But the last few episodes of the show get things back on track and end the series on a high note, so at least that is a good thing.

I have one question to ask you though: is this your first time through B5 (that you really remember)? Because if it is, after you finish, watch season 1 again. I think you will decide it is much improved on second viewing...because there is alot of foreshadowing in there that you don't see the first time through.

I'll be interested to see how you rank season 1 after doing this.

I'll do my rankings after I finish the entire series.

Can, I did notice that G'Kar was still there when I watched my last two episodes. I must have missed something in A Day In The Strife. I guess it was because Na'Far wasn't accepted by the Narn as their representative that G'Kar was able to remain?

I watched 2 episodes last night.

Passing Through Gethsemane was an excellent episode. I love religious episodes with lots of symbolism along with high-concept sci-fi (mind wiping) and this episode had them both. Interesting that Brad Dourif played two very similar characters on B5 and Voyager. He does play the psychopath pretty good though. The ending had some great twists with the new monk being Brother Edward's murderer and Lyta transfering something to Kosh. Or was she possessed by Kosh all along? Or is she Kosh? Lots of questions came out of that ending. I like that they have a rogue telepath now that doesn't mind doing forced mind reading on someone.

Voices Of Authority is currently my favourite episode of season 3. The whole Nightwatch thing is frighteningly real. I remember back in season 2 when they were first introduced, I thought they were good guys. Now it's obvious they're a parallel to Nazis and the Soviets. I feel really sorry for Zack, who I liked a lot in the 2nd season, but now I feel a little annoyed with him. He should grow a backbone and speak his mind! And then there's Ivanova trying to get some more First Ones on their side. I knew the Sigma 957 aliens had to return, and I like that they're good guys (I think.) I also liked how they appeared as a Native American totem kind of thing. So the Vorlons weren't the only First Ones to visit and influence Earth? I wonder if the Minbari on the White Star saw anything different?

Thanks.

See previous post. I have no idea what this is about either....PLUS it stretched out the entire forum, causing me to have to *gasp* work. You are welcome to post discussion in this thread, but it would be much preferred if it was something...oh...say....intelligible. ;)

Very poor grade of troll we're attracting today, methinks. :p

Tom, you're in for a treat with the next few episodes. :D
