Hey, I kind of like Grey 17 is Missing. :p

Yeah, April 25 sounds good, but that's getting awfully close to finals for me. We'll have to see when I get closer to that date.

Well, I like the B-Plot...

Yeah, pretty much. Although the A-Plot, despite being mostly pointless, has a little bit of charm since I've seen so many horror movies, and plus, I'll watch anything with Garibaldi at the center of attention. He's the best human character on Babylon 5, no contest.

Well, finals are the first week in May. It's just that a lot of those finals are huge papers that I'll be writing the week or two or three (or more) before. And I have a film to do sound editing/design on.

Crazy? Absofraginglutely. But that's just the way it is. *Shrugs*

May makes sense. they moved daylight savings up by a month - just making sure other fundamental things in the world hadn't changed as well.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

Well, I've started watching Babylon 5 again, from the beginning, according to the Lurker Guide's best possible episode order. If you all remember, with the exception of a few episodes, I absolutely hated the pilot and first season of Babylon 5. The acting, the sets, the nature of the episodes--nothing really gelled with me until I saw Babylon Squared and Chrysalis. After seeing the entire series through, however, new things have already begun coming to light and the brilliant foreshadowing layered throughout has really transformed my experience. I never thought I'd say it before, but on second viewing, I really like the first season of Babylon 5. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less, since I felt the same way about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

So, without further ado, a look back at Babylon 5...

"The Gathering" (TNT Version)
This is probably as unpolished as Babylon 5 gets, and yet on second viewing, there are so many things in it that I love. Londo, whom I initially found to be a buffoon and a waste of screen time, is a great character. Seeing G'Kar in full form as the villain of the piece is a shock and wonderful, with full knowledge of his impending transformation. It's equally interesting to get a look at Lyta Alexander here, before her experience with the Vorlons later in the series. And Michael O'Hare is excellent as Sinclair. His acting is a little suspect until we get to the scene in which he describes the Battle of the Line--but after that, he absolutely takes off with the role. I'm glad we got him for 24 episodes before Sheridan. They're two very different characters, and they're both great. Dr. Kyle's last lines ("Nothing is the same anymore"), which are of course echoed by Sinclair in the finale of this season are a little overdone, but in the context with what comes after, not as cheesy as I had initially thought.

Grade: B-

"Midnight on the Firing Line"
Ivanova is a welcome addition to the series, and I'm starting to like Claudia Christian's acting a lot more re-watching everything from the beginning. The talk of the election, which in another series would be dropped in and never referenced again, puts a dark shadow over what will come next. The same goes to Londo's dream, which is mentioned in the very first episode, but not realized until War Without End two and a half years later. The raiders and the easy solution to the Narn-Centauri conflict seemed like a lame resolution the first time I saw it, but now I realize that it was just a stop-gap of things to come.

Grade: A-

"Soul Hunter"
Knowing Sinclair's fate, this episode is a lot stronger. The actor playing the Soul Hunter didn't grab me at first viewing, but on second viewing, he's perfect for the part. Further foreshadowing about Sinclair's missing 24 hours and his destiny. If there's anything wrong with this episode, it's the criminal way in which special effects have been cropped near the end, totally ruining the composition. And that Bug Alien looks pretty cheesy. Glad they got rid of it after this year.

Grade: B+

"Born into Purple"
Adira is basically a love-interest of the week, at least, that's what it seems when you first see this episode. Most of the other characters in it are pretty stock, but Clive Revill brings a nice performance to a mostly thankless role. However, upon second viewing, when you realize the destinies of Adira, G'Kar, and Londo, everything is greatly improved.

Grade: B

I'm doing sound recording on a documentary film in Seattle, Washington Saturday-Wednesday, so I don't know if I'll be able to watch any more episodes until then. I should also note that I've been watching these all with a friend, and he's been enjoying them, though I have to turn to him and tell him that "this seems lame, but five years down the road it will be really important." I remember when you all told me that, and I was skeptical. The learner has become the teacher I guess. :D

Welcome to the club, Hirogen Alpha! That's why so many of us envy the people seeing the show for the first and even second time. The sense of discovery is so much fun.

Do be sure to post any fun reactions of your friend's, okay?

Good luck with your documentary.

True enough! But then, 'your' episodes are always good, IMO. You are a good character. :D

As far as this one goes, I just can't get past the Chuckie thing.

The part that I usually refer to as "Neroon grows a brain"?

The rest of it is so incredibly dire, though, that it can be difficult to remember the good stuff. "Grey 17" is a very bipolar episode. :D

It might be about time I rewatched the series myself. All I need is enough spare time...

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

A little quiet here. Too quite. Time for Hiro's Babylon 5 reviews to continue!

...In chronological order as per the Lurker’s Guide master list of episode (with one or two changes I have or will note, for example, I’m saving In the Beginning until near the end of the series). This is the second time I’ve seen the series through. As always, I’m watching it with a friend. He’s new to Babylon 5. Slowly, he’s getting into it, but I can see the same trepidation in his eyes that I had a year or so ago. But enough about me.

“Infection”
This is the episode that convinced me to keep watching Babylon 5, which is kind of ironic, since I think it’s one of the worst (if not the worst) of the entire season. I think the reason it made me stay on, in the beginning, was because of the two scenes in the end that foreshadow darker things to come. First, there’s a mention of Sinclair’s psychological state. He’s spent the pilot and the first four episodes running around and acting like Captain James T. Kirk. Garibaldi finally has the sense to tell him how outrageous this kind of behavior is. Sinclair is definitely suffering from some kind of PTSD, as will be revealed soon in greater detail. The other scene that I like is the one where Franklin is ordered to give up the alien artifacts to Earth Force’s bioweapons division, and he mentions a growing anti-alien presence on Earth. While this is probably mostly to foreshadow the events of “The War Prayer,” it also has the added bonus of indicating greater things to come. Still, in the final analysis, this is Babylon 5 unrefined—which isn’t surprising, considering this was the first regular episode to be produced.

Grade D+

“Parliament of Dreams”
Catherine Sakai is a character that I’ve always inexplicably liked for some reason. I know some people complain about the actress, but I’ve always found her to be beautiful and convincing. It’s a shame she’s only in a few episodes in only the first season. This episode is pretty good, though a few moments are forced. And I can’t help but find the assassin sent after G’Kar to be extremely similar to the interrogator from “Intersections in Real Time.” A lot of the dialogue here will be repeated in that episode—even the actor playing the assassin reminds me of the interrogator from the latter, superior (IMO) episode. Nevertheless, G’Kar’s plot plays out, juggling tension, comic relief, and the introduction of Na’Toth, pretty well.

Grade: B+

“Mind War”
Bester is a great character, and his introduction is excellent. Jason Ironside has a few interesting things at the end of the episode that I can’t remember playing out later. First, Talia is given telekinetic abilities. I can’t for the life of me remember that coming up again. Am I in for a surprise do to a sketchy memory? Secondly, Ironside tells Sinclair that he’ll see him in a million years. Does that mean Sinclair is going to the Vorlon homeworld after the destruction of Earth as seen in “Deconstruction of Falling Stars?” I wish we saw where his journey ended, after what “War Without End” only offers a glimpse of. Maybe his story will be continued/concluded in the Lost Tales? Finally, Sakai’s B-plot is interesting. I’m certainly glad they brought back the character, and so soon. No girlfriend of the week for Sinclair (or most of the characters on Babylon 5, thankfully)—for once I can (mostly) believe relationships on a sci-fi television series. Are those the First Ones she runs into at the planet she is surveying? I remember them being the Shadows on my first viewing, but seeing them now they are clearly of different design. G’Kar does say they are billions of years old. I’d give this one an A+, except for one little nitpick. Bester’s associate gets annihilated, but he is somehow spared to be a special guest star another day. Please. Reminds me off all the times Kirk and red shirt would beam down to a planet, both would be shot, and guess who would be the one to survive? Still, I’m a big fan of this episode, and the Psi Corp, so maybe my grade is a little more than it deserves. But what the hey.

Grade: A

I have to agree with the grade. If this one had been shown first, I'm not sure I'd've kept with it.

Let us know any fun things your friend says, okay? I'm enjoying reading how you're noticing things on your second trip through the series.

Re: First time impressions from the Babylon 5 virgin

"The War Prayer"
I liked a lot of things about this episode. The growing anti-alien movement continues in ways that I didn't even remember. Londo has a poignant, if slightly cliched B-Plot about love. This episode is far from perfect, though. I didn't remember it at all, but I knew Ivanova's ex-boyfriend was up to no good the moment he stepped onto the station. And he accepts Sinclair and Ivanova awfully quickly. Still, the cogs are in motion.

Grade: B-

"And A Sky Full of Stars"
This episode has a great reveal of Sinclair's backstory, almost elevating it to an A. Unfortunately, the two villians are way over the top. I'm also confused about the ending, where the Minbari tells Delenn that Sinclair will have to die if he finds out what happened to him. They know he's Valen at this point (or at least, has his spirit), so why would they want to kill him. Aren't they trying to protect him at all costs?
