Abrams is set to go, boldly I may add, where no man has gone before...again...

In 2009, J.J Abrams took a well known franchise - adorned by many as the greatest sci-fi series of all time - and gave it a 21st Century glean. However, in doing so, Abrams achieved something that few before him had - a film that lived up to regimental standards of its fan base whilst appeasing societies need for action, explosions and CGI-beauty. After all, what's a blockbuster without an explosion?
Better still, Abrams had resurrected a classic, embracing the rich television history of Gene Roddenberry's creation while exploring new territory through a cinematic format. Put simply, Abrams went "where no man had gone before".
With a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating, an Oscar and a very eager production company, a sequel was a matter of 'when'; and yet J.J insisted on perfection. Script after script were submitted for his approval, and each fell short of his expectations. In his own words: "I want to make sure that we're putting the story and the characters, the cast and the crew, and most importantly the audience, first before we start talking about exactly which locations we're going to be shooting at and what the wardrobe and visual effects budgets are."
And so, after months of feverish debate, ill-founded gossip and unsubstantiated rumours, Abrams has announced that filming will commence tomorrow, Thursday 12th January 2012 - trekkies rejoice!
In an interview with Collider, Abrams told how ST2 will be shot in film, because 3D isn't capable of anamorphic production, before being scaled up; that Benedict Cumberbatch was cast because of how awesome his name is; and that filming is likely to take four months.

As for the cast...well, in true Abrams style, it's sublime. Because of the sequels story, Abrams has chosen to cast from scratch - with the exception of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (Captain Kirk and Spock respectively) - using none of those featured in 2009's Star Trek. So, rather than trawling the internet for individual castings, here's a brief run down of those chosen to date:

Benedict Cumberbatch, of Sherlock fame. Believed to be cast as ST2's villain, this is the third big franchise that Cumberbatch has joined, having signed on to Peter Jackson's The Hobbit and recently appearing in Steven Spielberg's War Horse

Joseph Gatt
,best known for his role as Frost Giant Grundroth in Thor. Gatt's role is being kept quiet, but you can be sure that it's one that makes full use of his impressive stature.

This is rapidly becoming a British-only affair. Best known as 'Micky' in Doctor Who, Noel Clarke is set to play "...a family man with a wife and young daughter" - great scoop there Variety!Either way, it's a casting that has Abrams stamp all over.

Another unspecified role, Alice Eve - of She's Out of My League fame - was cast ahead of Hayley Atwell (Captain America) and Teresa Palmer (I am Number Four)...apparently. Little is known on how Abrams intents to use Eve, but at least we know there's a bit of eye candy now.

When Peter Weller was first cast, Abrams and co were remaining as tight-lipped as ever on his involvement. However, Weller's agent, Tony Eisner, revealed recently that his clients role is a "substantial one, which will see him playing a CEO". Now, a question to the Trekkies out there - is there any, well-documented CEO in the Star Trek mythology?
For the younger readers out there, Weller is most known for his performance as RoboCopin 1987's aptly named RoboCop - how about that for an interesting role?

Last, but certainly not least, we have Nazneen Contractor. Best known for her role in Television series 24, the dark haired beauty is set to play Noel Clarke's on-screen wife. Heck, it's not much, but at least we know something about this one, right?

And there we have it, your full casting list. I must say I'm pleased that Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are returning, because I feel there castings as Kirk and Spock were right on the money; as were the castings of the other, magnificent five (in Scotty, McCoy, Uhura, Checkov and Sulu). Pine has that cheeky, daredevil persona to a tee, whereas Quinto does logical like no other.
Star Trek 2 - a proper title is yet to be decided - is set for a May 2013 release, and I'm already counting down the days. After all, this is a series that gave us this wonderful quote:
"I would be delighted to offer any advice I can on understanding women. When I have some, I'll let you know" (Picard, Jean Luc; Star Trek: The Next Generation

Enjoyed the hell out of the first one, I'm all set for the sequel, even if its production kept gettin' pushed back.

I enjoyed the last one, but cautiously so. The script really was quite dumb if you thought about certain things long enough, yet it was a fun ride so I didn't care.

However, you can only pull that trick once. As Trek fans, I think we've come to demand a little more substance to our sci-fi than "Super-Action Space Adventure In The Future Of Space!"

Which is why I can't wait to see if it'll be the same thing over again, and how well it does if it is. Although, I think that since they got the introductory stuff out of the way in the first movie, the second has more potential to go above and beyond being just a reboot. At least I hope it will.

Sort of, I'll go and see it but I'm not particularly excited about it due to how I feel about XI. I do hope I'll find it more enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to it. I thought Abrams' film was the best thing to happen to the franchise in more than a decade.

I'm looking forward to it as well. Star Trek 2009 made it OK to talk Trek in my workplace. Everyone seemed to have a comment about the movie, which in turn led to discussions about the various series. It helped breath life back into a franchise I had feared to be dead.

I do hope for more plot-wise, but I am more than happy to be taken on an entertaining ride!

Sure, I'm looking forward to it. My bet is that the baddies will be Klingons (since the villain needs to also be someone who could be played by the Latino actors they were also auditioning). But Star Trek won't be the same till it's back on TV. Two hours every few years is NOT enough! :klingon:

Hmmm... I'm swings and roundabouts.

I hadn't been especially looking forward to the first one - I was too worried that there was too much opportunity for them to royally screw it up all to hell.

But then it turned out that I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I thought they did it just about as well as probably could have been done.

But then I thought that about the first Transformers movie too, and look what happened to that.

So basically I'm back where I started - hopeful but distinctly cautious.

.

I really do hate it when people call this Star Trek 2. It's not the second ST movie. That one already came and went. This is the twelfth, not the second.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings. I want to hope it'll be good, but honestly I'm kind of afraid it'll just fall into the trap of full of stupid cliches that are available for a sequel to STXI.

I enjoyed Star Trek XI, but in spite of a lot of silly plot contirvances. It really managed to be a fun ride despite all its issues, and I'm skeptical that ST XII will have corrected many of XI's flaws in any significant way. I'm also expecting yet another throwaway villain like every ST movie villain (except Chang) has been. Well, we'll see. I don't really expect some genius film that redefines the franchise, but hopefully it'll at least be fun like the first one.

This is SO full of win

If this film works the ST franchise is good for another ten years or more. If this film flops then Star Trek really will be in the Dark ages... I'm talking years, perhaps in the tens, before it is even touched again.

If JJ Abrams screws this up (and there are many ways to screw it up, or make it horrible for the sheeple or for Trekkies) then don't expect another ST movie or series in at least ten years...

Can JJ Abrams pull off the same trick twice? I hope so...

If the villain is actually going to be Khan, then no I'm not. If it's going into an entirely new direction because with the new alternate universe they CAN AND GET AWAY WITH IT, than sure. Still, I read something a few weeks ago saying that the Villain would be Khan and my heart absolutely Sank. What next? Star Trek XIV is going to bring back George and Gracie?

Personally no, its just going to be a 2 hour movie featuring a cast of characters I'm not particularly interested in. It will probably be enjoyable but its not something I'm getting that excited over.
