Niners: Are You Looking Forward to Star Trek: 2 (or XII)?

I'm not looking forward to it.

This first one was a mess, ruined by constant camera-shaking. It had no plot yet legion of plotholes (or perhaps plot absurdities is a better way to put it), a caricature of a villain, and was completely mindless.

I will also never understand why most Niners hate the episode "Valiant," yet ST09 is extremely popular, even though what little plot that does have is just a rehashed (albeit far more incoherent) version of "Valiant's" plot.

I expect more of the same from the next one.

No, I'm not unfortunately due to my great disappointment with how JJ handled the Trek lore. I may be in the minority, but it is my opinion.

Sure, I'm looking forward to it. My bet is that the baddies will be Klingons (since the villain needs to also be someone who could be played by the Latino actors they were also auditioning).

Why do they need Latino actors to play Klingons?

You don't, particularly. And my guess is that Cumberbatch is playing a Klingon, so that's actually the opposite of what I was saying. But they were auditioning Latino actors, and Latinos could play Klingons, sooo...

Many of the other possibilities don't work. Khan does, but Cummerbatch can't play Khan, for reasons of political correctness. Rommies maybe, but another Rommie-centric movie doesn't seem likely. Gary Seven is out, Lord Garth - probably not. Tholians, tribbles and giant space amoebas don't require humans to play them. So by process of elimination, all that's left is the ole turtleheads.

I've been thinking about this recently, and why not go a little more modern in this universe and have a real first contact with the Cardassians. It just seems like a lot of story potential there with various past wars (Not saying that would happen in this universe but it could) and it's a race that really should be given the big screen format and they could be new enough to be fresh and interesting. I think for me though, it's that whole thing of we never got a proper first contact with them and they have always been an interesting race that I would love to see them in a movie as a way to go into an unexpected direction since, like I said earlier, they can and get away with it.

Personally, it's the other way around. I love Valiant and...get some enjoyment out of STXI despite the ridiculousness of it. To me, Valiant shows what would really happen if you put an advanced combat ship in the hands of a bunch of teenagers and 20somethings. The result is wildly different, so that could influence liking one and not the other.

I will enjoy the movie for what it is, a summer blockbuster filled with exciting action sequences and special effects. As to whether it will be an acceptable Star Trek movie, I have serious reservations that JJ can even pull that off.

I've sort of seen the first film; I fast forwarded to see the excellent special effects, but the dialogue left me unimpressed.

Its not cinematic, that's why. First contact with the Cardassians just wouldn't be a cinematic storyline. That's the problem with Trek as a movie-only franchise, it isn't really capable of fulfilling most of what we want to see.

No. If this movie works, the franchise is good for exactly one more sequel. That sequel will then be in the same make-or-break position. The days where they can make a crappy movie and still have a sequel as a given are not coming back.

Well, what is cinematic, more Klingons? You don't know if you don't try. I mean if you're trying to bring Star Trek to the masses and you're looking for something cinematic, I think they've probably failed already. Having the same ol same ol ain't going to cut it.

Actually, more likely is one more sequel and a "reboot" Just like the Spider-Man series.

We will have a reboot of a reboot because that is what Hollywood does - recycle, reboot, sequel.

I look forward to it as alternate-universe disposable entertainment. But it will never replace canon or the importance of the original ST universe to me.

And I won't pay a dime to see it in the theatre. That is what Netflix is for.
