How much he is "valued" by Paramount has absolutely nothing to do with it if, in retirement, he read the JJ film's script and wanted to do it. Which is what happened.
Actually, no, they sat down with him before they wrote the script.
He took the job because he liked the story that was pitched to him. Subtle difference.
