Night shift captain and crew

How does that split up over 24 hours, assuming the Enterprise works to Earth time? I know that DS9 operates over a 26 hour day based on Bajor's rotation, but that makes it more confusing.

Four shift rota I can understand. Even six, or three shift rota. But five? You work 4 hours 48 minutes a day?
They use metric time. Divides evenly by 5. ;)
- And his breakfast looks like it's from 06:00 to 07:30! Whatever is he eating to warrant such long breaks?
Maybe most of it is actually spent in meditation? I don't know about you, but I don't always spend my "meal breaks" eating if there are errands to run or I need a nap instead. Being around emotional beings all the time might cause Spock to need to freshen up his control a bit here and there.

IIRC aboard US Navy submarine there's only two shifts and their day lasts only 16 hours, you're 8 hours on and 8 hours off (rinse and repeat).

Of course, as medical officers they shouldn't have been eligible to do so. Even if they passed a test on the holodeck by ordering Geordi to his death.
Crusher passed her test the first time by immediately walking over to LaForge and injecting him with poison.

Not on my sub. We had 18 hour days with 6 on and 12 off. Supposedly now the Navy is switching to 24 hour watch rotations for subs but I'm not sure how that works.

I use my break at work to use the patient's gym, then eat on the job :)

It always makes me wonder though why things always happen on the main crew's shift and you hardly ever see them have to get Kirk or Picard out of bed (other than for Q I mean).
The events in Cause & Effect, leading up the destruction of the D occur during the night. The after hours poker game , Geordi's late night visit to sickbay, Bev's eerie bedtime echoes. Picard reading before bed. The ship is destroyed shortly after morning report at 07:00. In fact, for the final 2 loops, they call everyone in early, to get a jump on it.

Most of the abductions in Schisms occur during the night as well. In fact, some events like Genesis or Masks there's no knowing what time it is at all. They could easily be happening at odd hours. Mostly though, there's a solid reason why many things would happen during normal working hours. That's when the majority of the crew are active, & their missions are under way. They're doing their largest amount of fiddling/meddling & encountering
