NHL Discussion - 2009-2010 Season

And the Panthers' fire sale begins: Pens acquire Jordan Leopold for a 2nd Round pick.

EDIT--
As does the Oilers' fire sale: Grebeshkov to Preds for a 2nd Round pick.

It's going to be hard to say goodbye to Olympic hockey.

Hockey seemed so much better when Bettman didn't have a hand in it.

Watching Colorado- Detroit right now. 2 observations: It sounds like a Red Wings home game there are so many Red Wings fans in the stands.

The Avalanche fans in the house haven't forgotten Bertuzzi's ultimate act of chicken-shittedness, booing every time he touches the puck. The announcers don't even have to call his name.

Aside from my earlier suggestion for next season, how have the Red Wings completely collapsed this season? What happened to them?

I really can't figure out why Bertuzzi is still so infamous in a league which regularly sees equivalent incidents (heck, Patrice Cormier is mentioned above as if he were just another name in a trade, and not a screaming thug whose moment of infamy is easily worse than Bertuzzi's).

Not, mind you, that I intend this as a defense of Bertuzzi.

^ Detroit was playing in Colorado, that's why he got booed everytime he was on the ice. It's not like that everywhere he plays.

Yeah, I thought of that as I was writing - it is worse in Colorado. But it does come up whenever Bertuzzi is mentioned in any context; when he was traded to Calgary, commentators were wondering if Flames fans would put up with him because of "that punch."

They were better off worrying about his tendency to phone it in, frankly.

"A lateral, back pressure or blind-side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or is the principal point of contact is not permitted. A violation of the above will result in a minor or major penalty and shall be reviewed for possible supplemental discipline."
-- Rule proposal by NHL GMs

Also, no suspension to Cooke for the hit that possibly ended Savard's season. (And possibly the Bruins' season as well.)

They couldn't suspend him seeing as they didn't suspend Richards for the exact same hit earlier in the season. Plus there wasn't a rule explicitly saying shoulder to head hits when a player is in a prone position like that are illegal. So technically, he was in the clear. Of course that doesn't make it right, I know how Cooke plays, and that was cheap and dirty as hell.

Cheap, yes. It was more reckless than out-right dirty. Cooke hit shoulder on shoulder, just after Savard released the puck. Cooke's shoulder got deflected upward into Savard's head only after the initial contact.

There's another Pens vs. Bruins game coming up soon. This decision is going to make that a very nasty affair.

Did you guys see Ovie's hit on Campbell? He got kicked out of the game and got a two-game suspension as well. Campbell's season is over though... broken clavicle and broken ribs.

Anyone got an opinion? I'd state mine, but seeing how I think Ovie is a dirty player my opinion might not be all that objective.

The suspension is a joke. It won't affect the Capitals diddly-squat, and certainly won't do anything to convince Boudreau to rein in Ovechkin.

Had Cooke been suspended, then it might have affected the Penguins' battle for the top spot in their division. Had Downie been suspended, then it might have affected the Lightnings' battle for a playoff spot.

What does suspending Ovechkin for two games mean? At best it gives Crosby and Stamkos a slight edge in the Richard trophy race. Whoopdie-doo.

Giving him two games at the start of the Playoffs would have had some teeth.

I'm in total agreement.

How does letting gutless pukes like Cooke and Downie off scot free and suspending one of your marquee players help the game?

^ Well according to the rules at the time of the Cooke hit, what that gutless coward did was actually legal. It's also probably what prompted the NHL to finally crack down on hits to the head. Well, in theory at least.

Cooke's a well known filth monger. He'll get his the next time he plays Boston. He'd better keep his head on a swivel, and not be a gutless puke if someone wants to fight him.

I still think that if you cause an injury that keeps a player out of action, your suspension is as long as the player is unable to play. That will cut down on some of the bullshit.

The bonus in this plan is that Bertuzzi would still be in street clothes.

I'm stunned that hits to the head haven't been banned before this season. I'm no fan of the Caps, but they are clearly the best in the East.

Bruce Boudreau's POV: Ovechkin's innocent. "The boards caused the damage".

I'm speechless. No joke I can possibly make can rival the mind-boggling stupidity of that argument. Kudos, Bruce.

I was disappointed by Jason Spezza's comments on the incoming headshot prevention measures, claiming that NHLPA needs time to go through the rules to make sure about wordings and so forth.

Seriously? It's not like Bettman and his crew are trying to slide in some kind of subliminal message or some underhanded measure in advance of the next labor negotiation. This is a rule to help players, why are players dragging their heels on it?

Hockey fans when do/should you start growing your playoff beard ( if you do at all), I'm pretty sure my Team is in.
