NHL Discussion - 2009-2010 Season

Hockey fans when do/should you start growing your playoff beard ( if you do at all), I'm pretty sure my Team is in.

I think technically, they're supposed to start when the playoffs do. Not that I have to worry about it, as I watch the Leafs gun for 28th place.

When you start igrowing the beard sn't half as important as when you shave it.

Do you refuse to shave until your team is eliminated, or do you shave after a big loss to 'shake things up'?

Canucks just signed a six-year contract with Ryan Kesler. Rumour is it's worth 30 million.
HUGE signing. Kesler is just entering his prime, is almost a ppg player and a defensive specialist as well. So happy we locked him up.

I don't know if anyone has looked at the standings but PHoenix is second place in the West right now. Unbelievable what they've managed to accomplish this season.

I guess it just shows that there's more to coaching than being a Hall of Fame player and holding all the major records.

I still can't believe the NHLPA is dragging their heels on the headshot rule.

It seems like they would rather protect the 5% of its membership who are goons than the other 95%. I liked seeing Hal Gill on Sportscentre this morning saying "It's Common Sense!"

If only the NHLPA thought so.

A temporary head shot rule went into effect today. No new on-ice penalties for the time being, but the league can now take disciplinary actions on head shots regardless of whether a penalty had been called.

Meanwhile in an ENTIRELY UNRELATED story...
Today, Jaro Spacek walloped human pinata David Booth in the head (Remember Booth? Injured by an unpenalized head shot from Mike Richards?). No penalty called.

Man Booth is having a tough year. 2 Head shots in one season is not good. Glad the league is doing something but it seems like a lot more could be done.

Did anyone see the Sens-Flyers game a couple of days ago? Gagne got boarded, which took him out of the play and a goal gets scored. Then he goes ape-shit on the guy who did it (I think he got a seven minute major). If you know anything about Gagne, he doesn't fight. He's pretty much the opposite of the stereotypical Flyer.

Video

Volchenkov's hit was brutal but Gagne knew it was coming. Even the announcers were taking him to task for leaving himself open. I don't blame him for losing his cool and fighting back, though.

^ So the Pens get to play their second winter classic, while most teams haven't played a single one? That's just fucking annoying. But hey, the league's gotta show off Crosby and Ovie.

Many probably won't, period. I honestly can't picture a Winter Classic featuring the Lightning or the Predators. Also, the article didn't discount the much expected Canadian Winter Classic.

It does if it wants to draw in new fans. It's no different than any other sports league.

The Winter Classic is a one day bump in NHL ratings and popularity.

It really doesn't change anything for those who watch hockey on a regular basis.
