NHL Discussion - 2009-2010 Season

^ Well... it's possible they just wanted to shake things up. I personally think Phaneuf has always been a bit overrated, so I really don't think they made a bad deal. Besides, I'll be quite happy if they keep sucking. ;)

^ Yeah but the way they've been playing lately, they won't stay in the position for long. Before the trades anyway, who knows how they'll play now.

But there are always going to be slumps. Hell, we're not even at the olympic break yet and there is still quite a ways to go. It just seems to me they are giving up the season, and it feels a bit too early to do so.

True, but it's pretty clear that even if the Flames make the playoffs, they're not going to go deep. Might as well try to shake things up—either they gel and go somewhere, or they tank and Calgary does better in the draft. Makes sense to me.

As for the Leafs? The jury is out. :p  :guffaw: :sigh: :scream::wah:

Westboro Baptist Church has officially gone too far with their protest Sunday at the Stars- Coyotes game.

They were protesting sports in general,b ut if they wanted to get specific, Marty Turco's goaltending has been pretty bad lately.

Ken Hitchcock is out in Columbus.

He won't have to wait long for another job. He gave Columbus a hockey identity, but with Mason coming back to earth and defensive struggles, his time was limited.

I shall express my profound disappointment to this turn of events with a song of lament:

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye!

It's about f'ing time. He's really made a mess of the team this year. The guy has been poison to the franchise's young talent (see: Filatov, Nikita), and he hasn't given any young player not named Mason a fair shot this season (see: Brassard, Derick).

In Mason's case, he got way too much of a chance, costing the team its season. Though that was probably management/ownership's fault as much as Hitch's. He really was built-up as the #2 star and savior of the franchise, and god only knows where he goes from here.

It seems a bunch of teams want Kovalchuk (duh), but he's too expensive for most of them (again duh). Supposedly Atlanta offered him a $80m, 10-year contract. If you consider both Sedins are costing Vancouver a little over $12m a year, that seems too much to me personally.

Filatov's problem wasn't Hitchcock. It was Filatov, pure and simple. No matter how talented the kid may be, he had no business making the demands he did. I'm not saying Hitch handled things the best way, but at least in that instance it wasn't his fault.

I don't blame Hitch for all of Filatov's problems, no, but Hitch is certainly not blameless in driving him away in the first place.

So it seems the Trashers offered Kovalchuk a 12-year $101m and a 7-year $70m deal and he rejected them both. WTF? Does he really think he's worth THAT much? Or maybe he actually wants to leave Atlanta, but he doesn't wanna come out and say it. Either way, as long Gillis doesn't go after him I don't really care where he ends up.

Kovalchuk to the Devils for Oduya, Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and a 1st round pick.

While the Devils certainly needed some scoring, I wonder if he'll be that great a fit for the Devils' system, personally.

Looks like the Caps have to get through Montreal, the Senators, and St. Louis this week and they tie the NHL record for longest winning streak. That will make the Olympic break really tough as we have to wait two weeks before we see if they will break the record.

As long as there's some good hockey at the Olympics this year, I don't mind the break at all.

I just hope that Giguere continues to play they way he has for the Leafs and they manage to climb out of the bottom five. I don't want Boston getting a lottery shot thanks to the Kessel trade.

So much for that.

Try again next season.

They really should consider 20-minute overtime periods four on four, especially after three sudden death overtime periods in the playoffs.
