NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

I'm likely the only Broncos fan to feel this way, but I'm not happy that McD has been released. I still felt like he could have done good things for Denver and I wanted to see him get at least a third year to get his system up and running.

Yeah, who would've thought that trading away extremely talented young players and bringing in over-the-hill veterans and cripples would have a detrimental effect on the quality of football played? Dude deserved more time. :p

In any event, I think the colossal disaster of McDaniels' tenure guarantees that the Broncos will never, ever again hire a guy who wants full coach / GM powers.

I think Tim Tebow was his undoing. Why draft another young QB when you have a capable starter in Kyle Orton?

Conversely, why draft a QB (or any player) at #1 and then have him sit on the bench? Why draft a guy first that you don't intend to play? Did they have no needs in their secondary or offensive line?

You can point to a lot of things that brought down McDaniels. His reign in Denver was really, really awful. The way he botched the 2009 draft will go down as one of the most hilariously screwed-up drafts in history.

With the Moreno pick, the Broncos could have had Brian Orakpo. With the Ayers pick, the Broncos could have had Clay Matthews. With the Alphonso Smith pick, the Broncos could have kept their damn first-round pick the following year. (And grabbed Earl Thomas. Jesus Christ.). And there's no way that Richard Quinn was worth the last second-round pick, or the two middle-third-round picks the Broncos traded. (And don't forget that this year, he took Demaryius Thomas over Dez Bryant and then Tim Tebow's Jersey Sales three picks later.)

Look at it this way: If it weren't for McDaniels, the Broncos would have Cutler / Marshall / Hillis, and instead they have Orton / Lloyd / Moreno.

Conversely, why draft a QB (or any player) at #1 and then have him sit on the bench? Why draft a guy first that you don't intend to play?

That's a questionable line of thinking; sitting on the bench for a few years while learning how to be an NFL quarterback turned Aaron Rodgers into the first Jeff Tedford quarterback who didn't suck out loud as a pro.

Like I said, it was way too soon for him. The Broncos were hoping to catch a little Bill Belichick magic and they overreached on a guy who didn't have anywhere near the coaching experience he should have gotten before trying to take on a head coaching position.

Oh, I don't think there's any debate on that. He may -- may -- have been mature enough to be a head coach, but allowing him absolute control over personnel decisions and letting him run the entire show was about as smart as giving a 2-year-old the keys to a Ferrari.

He'll latch on as an offensive coordinator somewhere about a day after the season ends, though. (Or he'll join Lane Kiffin at USC for the ultimate troll staff in history.)

I agree. I've never really liked the idea of a head coach having absolute control over personnel decisions anyway. I'd prefer that they just focus on coaching.

I think it will be Patriots SAINTS...a bit of a competition between the Patriots and the COLTS on who can get by a stiff brees...
I don't think the Saints are going back to the Super Bowl this year. Brees is looking a little winded out there.

:shifty:

I think Mark Schlereth said it best when dealing with GM/Coach Mike Shannahan... His contract was up after the first Superbowl year, and after yet another surgery Shannahan offered him a 1 year 'minimum wage' contract stating that he couldn't pass a physical with another team.
When they were in the playoffs the next year Shannahan came to him and told him that Schlereth was the best in the league at this position and he couldn't count on Schlereth's back-up (who made more than him) to make the plays.

He had a hard time being motivated by the coach that basically told him he was a washed up has-been who was speaking as the GM.

Bradford (among others) might disagree. I think generally you go for development projects further down the board. The guy you take first you would expect to have an immediate impact, especially at the rate rookies in the NFL are getting paid.

JMHO

Did the Broncos just pick up Tebow to block another team from doing so? They obviously have 100% faith in Orton considering Tebow has only thrown 1 pass (for a touchdown) the whole season, even when they've been down by 40+ points.

Both approaches have worked and flamed out miserably. The high-rise salaries have practically demanded rookie QB's start almost right away ... which in one sense would seem counterproductive given the complexity of the position. It's true that getting them out there right away has worked out famously well for guys like Peyton Manning, and more recently Bradford and Matt Ryan. It's also worked well to site the QB if you have a decent veteran starter such as it did at first for the Bengals with Carson Palmer (who now seems to have the yips after his injury a couple of years ago). Then again you've had some well-known busts like Akili Smith, Heath Shuler, and the infamous Jamarcus Russell.

It ought to be interesting to see what changes in this regard, if anything, once the salary structure for rookies is changed. Timby and others can speak far more intelligently than I can on that matter.

You have to remember that Denver didn't really develop that faith in Orton until well into the offseason/ preseason. I think Tebow was brought in for the same reason that they traded out for Quinn: At that time, they didn't feel that Orton provided them with any sort of long-term solution and were bringing in new guys to pressure him/ replace him.

^^ This.

However, the story goes that McDaniels was sold on Tebow after a private meeting with him leading some to speculate that Tebow has a strange power and instead of Denver picking him, he picked Denver because we're a mile closer to god... but that's just a theory...

You're the only one I know, or at least the only one I know who will admit it.

Now that McD is gone, I'm changing my stance on Tebow and saying that the remainder of this season should be Tebow-Time. Tebow lost his biggest supporter in McD. As much as I like and support Orton, Tebow needs to play this season just so he can show what he has to contribute to his team. I'm gonna be pissed if the new guy shows up and just straight up chucks him out for being an unworkable pet project.

I don't question Tebow's athletic ability and work ethic, but I think McHoodie believed he could turn Tebow into the next Tom Brady.

Really. I mean there weren't even any home games blacked out yet.

Bowlen should have hired a GM first, then a coach. I'll guarantee he does it this way this time.

^I like Alphonso Smith, he's funny.

Can anyone acknowledge or dispel the rumor that Peyton Hillis was traded because he hit on McDaniels' wife (not knowing she was his wife)?

Well this comes under the heading of if it's not one goddamned thing it's another. Matt Cassel finally starts playing up to his potential and today, he has an emergency appendectomy. Biggest game of the year coming up for the Chiefs and we are losing our starting QB.

The irony here is that a couple of months ago I would have considered this to be good news. He finally plays good and now he's out. Goddammit!

He'll be back before the end of the season, don't worry. Ben Roethlisberger had an appendectomy in the middle of a season and only missed one game, IIRC.

Eh, I think Thigpen's better anyway. But it'll certainly make things more interesting. I just hope the Chiefs gets some discipline and watch the penalties.
