Arizona actually managed to defeat the Niners on Sunday.

Of course, unless you're a Cardinals fan, this will not qualify as any sort of accomplishment.

Still, it's the kind of game they found ways to lose for years. Encouraging that they put the clamps on and held the ball until it was far too late for San Fran to do a thing. :techman:

I watched that game. Arizona should have blown them out. Two major penalties inside the Niners ten yard line turned 14 points into 3.

Edge looked pretty good.

The names I am hearing most often for Brady's replacement are Chris Simms and Daunte Culpepper. Do the Pats fans here have a preference for either of them?

Simms would be alright, I guess. The Pats have the Jets, Miami, a bye, and SanFran up on the schedule, so my guess is that it's still Cassell's job to lose. Gotta have someone with some experience in case he doesn't cut it, though. The rest of the team is good enough, the hope is that Matt can play a good game, and lean on the coaches and team to get through it.

Obviously, the SuperBowl dreams are looking dead (or on life support) at the moment, but if Cassell can step up, the rest of the pieces of a SuperBowl contender are still there...

I've also read that the Pats are looking at Tim Rattay. Wasn't he drafted ahead of Brady, way back when?

As to the Pats' SB championship chances, yeah they are definitely dimmer. But take heart by remembering how the Giants back under Parcells won one with Jeff Hostettler as their QB at the end of the season as well as in the SUper Bowl that year.

It's not impossible, as the rest of the team is still good enough, will just have to wait and see. Still think they are just looking at these other names as backups, and it's Cassel's team to lose...

Simms wasn't bad the year he started in Tampa. I don't know what to say about Rattay as he had nothing around him.

Culpepper was never the same after his knee got busted.

Matt Cassel knows this offense inside and out. He'll be the go to guy unless Simms just comes in and blows him away.

I was the only guy to pick Chicago over Indianapolis in the Pick 'Em. Don't count these guys out. Their defense is scary good again.

^ Yeah, he's been in the system for years. Anyone they bring in would need time to learn the playbook and would severely limits the offense.

Here's a nicely evil thought... what if Brady's injury had happened earlier, so that the Pats had a chance to sign Chad Pennington?

Oh I think Pennington would have been more fun, considering the lovely relationship between Jets and the Pats. Pennignton's got an incredible "football mind" that learns quickly, to the point he's destined to be coach someday.

perhaps. I think that at the moment, they're better off just sticking with Cassel and seeing what they've got. If Belichick kept him on the roster, he's gotta see some sort of potential, or he'd have been replaced.

He knows the playbook best, and has the comfort level with the rest of the team. Add in that the schedule for this year isn't all that strong, (and that they have an early bye week), it's probably best to let Cassel play for the next 3-4 games and see how that goes. Can make more decisions after the 49ers game in week 5.

Still need another backup QB, though. If Simms is past his injury problems, I don't see why he couldn't be a capable backup for the time being as he learns the playbook. If it's determined that at some point, he gives them a better shot than Cassel, make the swap.

I don`t know about Culpepper. He is retired and I heard he retired because he was pissed off with the team owners for not giving him a chance to compete for a starting job in the preseason.

I haven't heard anyting about Culpepper... Tim Rattay and Chris Simms are the only names on the table that I have heard of.

I always liked Pennington and it's too bad he was run out of town. I'm glad he played well yesterday.

He is an intelligent and efficient, but not spectacular, player who has won playoff games before. He's got coach written all over him.

Well, it's now official. Brady is on the IR, and is done for the 08 season. In Matt We Trust? Patriot Nation shall have to see...

I watched that game. Arizona should have blown them out.

Cool. Out here in Tobyhanna PA we're forced to endure the Steagles. Ugh.

I saw highlights at NFL.com, and Niners fans have nothing about which to complain. The turnovers were caused not by SF's incompetence, but a Cardinals defense flying around and making plays.

I have the Sunday Ticket. I watch whatever I want.

;)

Right, Arizona's defense played well. It's the lack of discipline on offense that kept the game close. Two really stupid penalties (the chop block and the late hit at the goal line) allowed the 49ers to have some hope until the end.

Wait, I thought you said you don't allow the niners into your home. Now I think I really wish I was there. ;)

Anyway, decent start to the season. So many blow outs, Chicago beating Indy, and Brady is out for the season. I didn't know the hate was so strong with people that you would celebrate the fact that brady is gone for the season. That's kind of sad commentary, but of course that's just an opinion.

I couldn't watch the niners, but I really wish they would have won that game. This does seem like it's going to be a long year. I think I need to keep in mind that this was only week 1 because last night with all these news stories, I was thinking how big of a deal this was. The NFL is so unpredictable, but I guess this is why we watch it.

Well, there were extenuating circumstances.

First, I knew the Niners would lose. That's always fun to watch.

Second, I love watching Kurt Warner play. He'll always have a special place in my heart. *sniff*

Third, the Cowboys/Browns game turned out to be no good.

And fourth, I had to watch my fellow Aggie JT make his NFL starting debut. UC Davis Football Rules!

;)

Broncos are looking good, but I think the Raiders could make the second string from the State School for the Blind and Lame look good.

Eddie Royal, the Broncos rookie receiver has more yards and catches than the entire Raiders receiving corps.
