NFL Football - 2008-09 Season Discussion

I think I saw them say that there were five games that were won on the last play of hte game: four in the literal last seconds and one in overtime. Wow.....WOW!!!
A lot of excitiong finishes, but there were quite a few blowouts as well. All in all, a pretty good day for watching football.

Kind of feel bad for Detroit- had the refs not made some bad calls, they would have beat the Vikes. It was an ugly game regardless. When the crowd at the Metrodome started chanting "Fire Childress", the fans at the bar I was at joined in. Vikings fans tend to be a bit fickle, but considering how they played, I can't blame them for getting ornery.

Glad to see my Packers break their 3 game losing streak. It certainly helped that Seattle had Charlie Frye (didn't even know he was still around) as their QB, but a win's a win, I guess.

Now, just to make me feel worse, Romo suffered a broken Finger on his first play in overtime. :( (We really need a crying smilie.) He could be out for up to 4 weeks. It never rains, it pours.

See.... I don't get why a broken pinky would sideline him that long. I've heard of other QB's still playing decently with a broken finger before. Even tonight, Mort was saying that Drew Bledsoe once had a broken finger - I'm pretty sure on his throwing hand - and still played, winnign 3 out of 4.

Kurt Warner tried to play with a broken finger, and it nearly ruined him.

Also, the infamous Stanford loss by USC came when JD Booty threw four interceptions in the second half. He broke his finger in the second quarter.

If it's badly broken, it may need pins/surgery to heal.

Okay, that one I grant you for sure. It was pretty bad. I'm not accusing Romo of being a wuss or the Cowboys of being over protective. But still... I'd like to know the extent of the injury, especially if it's on his pink. Who knows? Maybe they'd have to give the ball to Barber more for a change. There offense seems more productive when he's more involved.

Is it possible that some quarterbacks are more dependent on the pinky than others—that the throwing motion somehow more fully involves it?

I tend to think that a gunslinger like Favre, who's really not known for his accuracy, might better play through such an injury than a Kurt Warner or Chad Pennington, QBs more respected for their accuracy and refinement.

I would imagine that based on the pinky's location on ball, it might have more of an effect on where it goes. It's not on the end where it might be able to go ignored, but right smack in the middle of the ball. Just a guess though.

trent difler tonight said it depends on the style of throwing motion and the way romo passes it would have a severe effect on it unless he let it heal.

Well, that's enough for me. I'm aware of how the pinky can in essence guis the ball, but even so I had to wonder just how much of an effect it'd have. Then again, it's also not as if the Boys are in dire need of their top line talent to get a win just to make the playoffs.

Well, it's been a screwy season so far, so I ought not to be TOO surprised that the Browns are beating the Giants tonight. Even so, I really didn't see Cleveland having any shot at all.

:guffaw: What a dick move! Up by 19 points with 8 minutes to go, and instead of the point after, they go for 2 point conversion. That's not a need, that's rubbing salt in the wound, and I love it!

I gotta say, though, that was a beautiful interception. It was right where it should have been, the Brown just had a great play on it.

I think that's part of it- some QBs rely on their pinkie more than others when throwing the ball. It also might matter what area of the pinkie was broken: I'd guess that if the break was near the hand, it'd be more difficult to control the ball.

As far as MNF goes, I didn't see that coming at all. I was glad to see the Giants lose, but they looked really flat- almost like they were looking past this game. Either that or there's even more parity in the NFL than I imagined.

Every single season there is a game or two like this. One where a prohibitive favorite loses to a team that has no business beating them in the first place. Of course, the Browns were highly thought of cmign into the season, but injuries kind of wrecked that.

So the Lions trade Roy Williams to the Cowboys for three draft picks. They also place QB Jon Kitna on IR.

Looks like they're calling this year quits already. They're 0-5, so it's not surprising.

However, I will not be rooting very heavily against the Cowboys the rest of the way, so Detroit gets a higher draft pick from them.

My first thought when I heard this news of the trade: "Wonder which wide receiver they're taking THIS time?" Then I remembered that they fired Millen already, so maybe ....

I laugh at Jerry Jones and the issues that Adam Jones has now brought to Dallas. Couldn't be more glad to not have him in Nashville.

At 5-0, we aren't missing him.
