NFL 2019 Season

Based on what I've been seeing flipping the channel yesterday, a lot of players across the entire league seem to be regressing. Runners can't run their routes, receivers can't catch and are dropping balls left and right, linemen are getting pancaked and letting their QB's fall in seconds, with more holding flags being thrown per game than I can count. Joe Flacco got sacked SIX times yesterday, and Miami continued their hot mess into oblivion against Dallas.

Seriously, I've seen NCAA Division III players move with more motivation to not suck than some of these million-dollar buffoons. We're wrapping up week three now, and a lot of these incidents appear to be more than just simple rookie jitters, which should be getting under control by now. What is happening?!?

<Sarcasm>Can't wait for the Redskins tonight</Sarcasm>.

 That would be kind of funny. Nothing like showing the entire country the true definition of "Epic Fail" on MNF. At least it wouldn't be considered an official loss...

Players skipping preseason and the lighter workload in training camp and practice is damaging the game.

Players getting their brains pounded into Jell-O is damaging "the game."

I tend to think that not being prepared for full contact in the games is likely leading to more injuries and QB’s getting hit more.

These are grown men, if they want to get their brains pounded into Jell-O, that is up to them. This isn’t the past anymore. Every person that goes onto the field knows the risks involved.

Yes, yes. I’m going to Hell. I’ll be fine as long as they don’t put me in the XFL section.

They've known for some time, to be fair. It's only just recently that the League, under the careful custodianship of Mr. Goodell, has actually admitted there really IS a problem. Now, in response, we have over-reactive zebras who make more error penalty calls than ever for helmet-on-helmet hits that don't actually happen.

Yeah, unlike in earlier days, the players know what's going to happen to them from the pounding and concussions.

The issue is that football is hugely popular among disproportionately large minority and poor populations, particularly in the south, and playing it is often culturally ingrained into them as the only possible way to escape poverty. Except 250-some people actually ever get drafted in any given year, and most of them have a sinecure education at best, which will do nothing for them after the vast majority wash out in training camp. Those who do stick will, statistically speaking, only do so for a couple of years, and at that point there's already a high likelihood of them having developed brain damage.

It's a broken system and a broken game, designed to chew people up and spit them out and recycle them with with new blood.

They get paid lots of money to have their heads pounded to jello. Ultimately, it's their decision. I suppose you could look at it as progress from the Roman era days of death and lions eating people for sport. The NFL will change eventually because of some players leaving early and the ultimate pervasive power of civil lawsuits from former players. Fifty years from now fans will be looking at the NFL (which will be simply a form of tag football by then) with dismay longing for the old days when players were simply ejected for actually tackling.

The NCAA being broken doesn’t make the game itself broken. Holding the NCAA accountable for making sure these kids are getting proper educations (and paid) should be the goal. Because the game isn’t going away.

If you ask me, even knowing what I know now, I would far rather put on a helmet and get on a football field than stand in a batters box and have someone throw one hundred mile per hour missiles at me. I saw Dickie Thon get hit in the face with a fastball, no thanks.

Statistically speaking, football players get their noggins knocked, in both practice and actual gameplay, like a zillion percent more than baseball players get socked in the face with a fastball.

I know that. Still doesn’t change the effect seeing Thon hit in the face had on me.

Doesn't Foles have a contract with Jacksonville with, like $Texas in guaranteed money?

Yep. But if Minshew is the real deal, Jacksonville might be able to dangle Foles to someone for a couple of mid-round picks.

And Trubisky is just a mess thus far...

Can you imagine if the Bears had decided to not trade with SF and instead planned on taking the "gunslinger project"?
