NFL 2014-2015 Season Discussion

My picks for today?

Patriots and Seattle.

I'll be rooting for the Colts and Green Bay though.

This part I see a lot, and hate it. It's the same game, with the same rules. Don't suddenly play by "playoff football" rulebook instead of the regular season one.
Sort of related, but I hate when people say stuff "it's the playoffs, there's no tomorrow, you got to go for it on fourth down here!" as if somehow punting would work better in the regular season or something. Ties in the NFL are a negligible factor, it's not soccer. If something gives you the best chances of winning in the playoffs, it gives you the best chance of winning in the regular season as well.

It at least makes a little more sense there, though. In general NFL coaches are too conservative, and play it safe too often. Rare are the ones that really push the envelope, because they're worried about losing their jobs if they go for it, don't make it, and then the talk about it being stupid starts to play out. Only the crazy ones, or ones with job security (or both) really push it that often. Belichick's 4th and 2 against the Colts back in 2006 was a good example. Didn't make it, but reasoning was solid. And a less secure coach gets fired over it. Or Grady Little sending Pedro back out in 2003; he DID get fired for that.

In the playoffs, it's all sudden death. If you're down points and time is short, easier to justify going for it vice playing it safe, less people will have your head. In fact, playing it safe is just as likely to hurt your job prospects, so might as well try and have your guys make a play. Same deal in hockey, suddenly the 4th line doesn't get a lot of ice time in the playoffs, and in basketball you shorten the bench there too to get your starters more time, even if they'll be tired. If you don't win, plenty of time to rest them in the off-season. Baseball will send out a pitcher on short rest to get a couple key innings, worked out ok for the Giants this year. You'd get murdered if you tried to send out Bumgarner on short rest in a game in June...

At least with this, it's a strategy thing that's changing, and rightfully so given the circumstances. What I was complaining about was the rules themselves changing.

There's a difference with pitchers where the concerns are usually related to injuries and you have to take the long view. All coaches should go for it more often on fourth down. It doesn't really make sense not to take the same risks in the regular season. In fact, you should probably take more risks in the regular season since the costs of it backfiring are less than a loss in the playoffs.

Man, the wheels are coming off in Seattle. They'd better get their shit together...

Russell Wilson's line in the first half:

1-8, 14 Yards, 3 interceptions.

We did it!!! This is just... Oh yeah!!! I was prepared for us to lose, but that win... geez, that was stunning! I just hope Richard Sherman's going to be okay. He was holding his right arm in so much pain...

Wow, the film must be reversed - he was holding his left arm on my TV. If he would have taken his helmet off, we could see if his hair was parted on the wrong side.

What a game....what a game...I really thought it was over going in to the 4th quarter.

The look on the Packers players faces with 2:00 left in the game. They knew it was over.

I think my favorite thing was the fake field goal that led to a touchdown. It really sparked the team, I think.

I loved Russell Wilson being so humble afterwards too. Both Russell and Kearse showing their emotions after the win.

I really hope Wilson does get a HUGE contract after this season. He deserves it...post season appearances in all three seasons being quarterback, TWO Super Bowl appearances. They've had big pay outs to keep the LOB, Beastmode's on lock for one more season, now they just need to keep DangerRuss.

I sure hope Sherman's OK too, seeing him tough out that injury to keep playing was inspiring. Earl Thomas and his shoulder too.

Glad they have two weeks to rest and recover and prepare.

Amen, I was vibrating after that one, I may still need a pacemaker, lol.

Russell and Kearse showing their emotions after the win

From worst 56 minutes of his career to the amazing ending. True champion., and such a humble guy.

Oops... I think I'm suffering from cold medicine. My mistake. :alienblush:

But I hope he's going to be okay.
As for Russell and Jermaine... they're such good guys! And when Russell mentioned his late dad in the postgame press conference, it's no wonder he was crying.

I don't care for the idea of the Seahawks in the Super Bowl again. But seeing the Packers embarrassed like that makes it all worth it.

I like the Packers. That said, I was glad we won against them today. I'm still in shock. I'm part of the 12s that remembers the days of Coach Knox and when it seemed like we couldn't get to the playoffs...

Literally all the important things in the Seattle-Green Bay game happened when I stepped out for a few seconds.

I remember when more recent Seahawks teams (with John Kitna at QB) were everyone's sleeper team to reach the Super Bowl and ended up missing the playoffs by a game. It's amazing what they've been able to build up there.

Yeah, you said it. Kitna was good... Hasselbeck was good too... Russell is... wow...

Yeah, that was just... stunning. I still can't quite believe it.

And let's not fail to give credit to the 'Hawks coaching staff. For instance, that fake FG wasn't some desperation move. According to this piece at SeattleTimes.com, that play had been created and heavily practiced just in the last few days because the Seahawks coaching staff noticed tendencies in GB's play that made them vulnerable to a fake.

The decision to install the play came midweek from special-teams coordinator Brian Schneider after seeing tendencies from the Packers’ field-goal cover unit. The Seahawks worked on it for the first time Thursday.
Ryan did plenty of lobbying for the play.
“I didn’t get within five feet of Pete (Carroll) or Brian without mentioning it to them,” he said. “Coach Carroll came up to me several times this week and said, ‘You know we are going to run this play, so be ready,’ ” Gilliam said.
And that was when the tide began to turn Seattle's way. The momentum shifted and Green Bay never knew what hit them.
