I would be surprised if Phoebe would do it. Sure, it's a famous role, and she would've breaking s barrier. However, she would be tied up just as things are launching for her. She's doing movies and she's writing her own work. Would she give up that control? How much money would it take?

That's one of the reasons I find Whittaker believable. She's in much the same place as Tennant was in 2005; a reasonably well-known face but not a Star who might balk at the idea of spending three years in Cardiff.
Yeah. Everyone else on that list in an actor. Phoebe is a writer as well. I just can't see her wanting to put that all on hold--especially given the street cree she has with Fleabag. (Seriously, in LA, every writer I know ADORES Fleabag. And rightly so.) Why give that up?

Yup, that's exactly why I don't expect her to take the role as much as I would love to see her take on it.
I won't lie: I'm very much looking forward to that part. Don't get me wrong, I want Waller-Bridge or Whittaker for their talent and their potential for the role, but I relish the opportunity to watch people whinge about a female Doctor.
I'd be happy with a woman Doctor. One thing I wonder is if the new agreement with China could dissuade them from this approach? I heard that can affect things such as portraying gay characters. Would they have a problem with a female action lead? I'm not sure. Even if they do, would that be enough to prevent it? I don't know, just thinking out loud here.

It won't be Phoebe Waller Bridge - she issued a flat-out denial a couple of weeks ago.
Right now the top odds on Oddschecker are Whittaker, Marshall, and Mylan, while the rumours I heard were for Mylan and James Norton. Take your pick...
(I have equal reasons for being for and against a femae Doctor, but won't know whether to cheer or burn until we actually see an episode with one and find out whether they've written/directed/played her just as the Doctor in a Dr Who story, or as some sort of standard-bearing lecture)

Fair point @Lonemagpie and hopefully if it is a woman it's the former (though can't see there wouldn't be a hint of the latter)
oddly my main concern relates to 14 being cast cos if it's another woman a certain section will complain but if it reverts to male I can see people being up in arms as well. Sadly it might take a few regenerations before people accept that it's just the best candidate at the time.

I'd be happy enough if it were Kris Marshall. If it is female Doctor, I only hope that the decision came from from a vision for a female doctor by Chibnal supported by a good casting match, rather than pressure to do the right thing.
If I were casting the first female doctor, I'd probably go for the likes of Sue Perkins or Sandy Toksvig, so its a good job I'm not in charge. I have faith the next doctor will be the right choice whoever it is.

That's something I've been thinking about. There will almost certainly be a female Doctor at some point, and it seems like it could be now. But what about the one after that? If they go back to having a man people will complain that they've reverted back to a boys club, and if they have another woman people will complain that it's now a permanent change. I think it's something that would only go away after multiple regenerations in both directions.
I'm curious though, what would be peoples' reaction if they brought back Romana at some point and had her regenerate into a man?
I'm glad that I'm American. My knowledge of British television actors is so limited, the casting of a new Doctor is always a surprise for me. I have no preconceived notions about any of the names floating about, so I'm good with whomever.
What about Graham Norton? Even more foppish than Pertwee and even more animated than Smith.
