Next! Your choice for the next Doctor.

I'm not surprised the bookies are placing Ben Whisaw as the leading candidate to become the next Doctor. He's young, he's quirky, he seems Doctor like in his performance as Q, and GallifreyBase is talking about him non-stop.

Lance Parkin made an intriguing suggestion on Facebook -- Jessica Raine. I hadn't considered her, but she'd be quite brilliant. And why he'd choose her over Olivia Colman:
Oh, that is in interesting an idea. I actually watched "Hide" again the other day and I was marveled by her performance. And it was the first time I've seen the episode since I saw her great performance as Verity in An Adventure in Space and Time.

I wouldn't be opposed to Raine, and I think the point that Colman would, counter intuitively, be a safe choice has some merit. That's one of the reasons I lean towards someone like Phoebe Waller Bridge because she has an ever so slightly deranged quality to her.

Of course if it is a woman I can, sadly, predict the type of complaints already.

"Oh they made her too mumsy."

"She's a bit hysterical isn't she?"

"why's she acting like a man?"

"Why isn't she acting like a man?"

"Her outfits too masculine."

"Her outfits too feminine."

and so on and so on. I say fuck it and do it anyway but I think whoever gets the job may need a thick skin, at least at first.

Whishaw is great, both as Q and Paddington. He's a good actor and he has that slightly alien quality about him that would make for a good Doctor but...we're back to safe choices again really aren't we?

Back to female candidates, and Line of Duty, I'm surprised Keeley Hawes hasn't been mentioned.

I think that the BBC should go with a Chinese actor to open the show up to the Chinese market. Jet Li? Jackie Chan?
In all seriousness though, I think an oriental Doctor or companion would be fantastic, it's something that doesn't seem to have been mentioned before.

We know the Beeb apparently want a fashionable Tennant/Smith type with possible US appeal, and therefore a bloke under 40. If we take it as a reasonable chance that it'd also be somebody who's worked with Chibnall before, I'd say the most likely names I could think of (cos it's as likely to be a theatre/soap actor I've never heard of and therefore *can't* name) would be Luke Evans or Jack Roth. Though if I was casting to that restriction I'd be looking for Tom Riley (who was quite Doctor-ish as Leo in Da Vinci's Demons, and I wouldn't care that he looks a bit like that Robin Hood...)

Tom Riley would be a great choice! I'd take Luke Evans as well, but yeah Tom Riley's a good idea.

@Lonemagpie Moffat had never worked with either Smith or Capaldi though had he? So it's by no means certain Chibnall will pick someone he knows.

I dunno. I think she's a little too cute. And I haven't seen anything crazy enough from her to put me in mind of the Doctor.

As traumatized as I am by Capaldi's departure, the DS9 fan in me would immediately feel better with Alexander Siddig in the role.

My main thing is that I absolutely do not want in the role any actor that reminds me in the slightest of Tennant or Smith! So, Ben Whishaw, keep on steppin'!

For a female Doctor, I'm not too familiar with Olivia Coleman but I like the fact that she would clearly not be an attempt to pander to the Tennant/Smith fangirls.

I can totally picture Laura Carmichael in the role. Although, if we're going to look at actresses from Downton Abbey, I think we need to look at Amy Nuttall. I felt she brought a wonderful, understated physical comedy to the show which, for some reason, only I have ever seemed to notice.

I can't picture Eva Green or Helena Bonham Carter in the role. But I also can't picture myself saying "no" to them if they wanted to do it.

Much as I'm in love with Peggy Carter, I can't fathom why anyone can picture Hayley Atwell as the Doctor. I can picture James D'Arcy as a very "safe" choice. But I don't want either one to do it because I'm still holding out hope that ABC or Netflix or someone will pick up a 3rd season of Agent Carter! :(

I couldn't see him doing it for more than 1 season, but I think Tom Hiddleston would be an interesting "safe" choice.

Luke Evans is far too beefy for the Doctor. Same with Idris Elba.

Tom Felton is younger than I would like but could bring an interesting dangerous quality to the role.

I like the sound of Alexander Siddig but I would be surprised if they went of another actor in their fifties so soon.
I hope they don't get Kris Marshall. Apart from that I am not bothered about the name if they are good in the part. After all I doubt many people were suggesting Tom Baker before he was plucked from the building site.

I like Marshall well enough but he's not remotely the Doctor.

It'd be kinda cool if it was nobody anyone had suggested like Matt.
