Next! Your choice for the next Doctor.

Alexander Siddig would be my choice, but I'm fine with a woman, etc. Siddig is just the only specific actor that comes to mind for me.

Yeah, maybe a low key show like the one where they announced Matt. The Capaldi one was a tad extreme! Did they do anything for Tennant? I can't recall.

IIRC, there was just a press release. The show had only just broadcast "Rose" when Eccleston's departure was announced, and Tennant's casting was announced almost immediately.

The moustache was a dead giveaway for me.

I'm surprised it took you this long to mention Emilia Fox ;)

Gillian Anderson is another great idea!

I love the idea of Tom Hardy. And considering he's done Peaky Blinders, we know he's willing to do television.
i

Tom Hardy is also currently starring in Taboo on BBC 1

Well much as I adore Emilia I don't really see her as the Doctor. Romana maybe but not the Doctor :-)

I've never really been firmly in the female Doctor bandwagon, however I love the idea of Eva Green taking on the role! She's beautiful and has a mysterious, sometimes eccentric quality in the parts she plays. And that voice!

Some of the other choices I don't think would work because, while great actresses, they're so identified by other roles, notably Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) and Gillian Anderson (Scully). It would just be harder to see them as the Doctor and not their other big franchise characters.

On the guy side, another vote for Alexander Siddig! As for Ben Daniels, I don't think "The Exorcist" is an issue, since I don't believe that was picked up for a second season.

Even though I know it won't happen, I feel compelled to drag out the two people I always mention when this comes up: Eddie Izzard and Alexander Siddig.

If we're so lucky to have a female Doctor, I second Eva Green and I would also suggest Kate Winslett, Rachel Weisz, and Amara Karan.
I'd simply stop watching if it was Izzard.

My top five choices, in order of preference :

Gillian Anderson
Helena Bonham Carter
Olivia Colman
Georgia Moffett
Russell Howard

Richard Ayoade

Good call.

Outstanding !

James Moran (The Fires of Pompeii and several eps of Torchwood) claimed on Twitter that he's putting his money on James D'Arcy (Jarvis from Agent Carter). He's not someone who immediately sprang to mind but but if they had to go with another white bloke I think he'd be great!

And of course he's worked with Chibnall before into the bargain!

My preference would be for someone around Eccleston's age, someone more serious again; this was partially achieved in Capaldi's earlier episodes but I feel he's gone too silly. In fact I'm hoping for the whole show to be more serious once Chibnall gets in, been far too comedic under Moffat.

Same as last time, I really, really hope we don't get a female Doctor, at least not for the sheer sake of it. I can't think of any suggestions I'd be at all favourable of; options such as Miranda Hart or Olivia Coleman in my opinion wouldn't fit the show at all (Hart especially, she'd just make the entire show a bloody comedy), and others such as Hayley Atwell I'd sooner see as a companion (Atwell would be a fantastic companion mind you). I reckon a non-white Doctor would be good though; especially in time travel episodes where the issue of race could be addressed, it'd add a new layer to the show whilst not changing the dynamic. An Asian Doctor would be appropriate given the prominence of Trump and so forth, but again don't cast a non-white Doctor for the sheer sake of it, only if the right person is found, although there are plenty of suggestions I could get behind. Here are some of my suggestions for the next Doctor:

David Harewood
After seeing him on Supergirl as Martian Manhunter/Hank Henshaw I could easily see him as being a great Doctor, he fits the bill of what I'm looking for in a Doctor; serious and would bring a better atmosphere to the show. It'd be really interesting to see how he'd pull off the role, I could see him being most reminiscent of Christopher Eccleston, which is the direction I want the show to take. The main problem is the busy schedule of Supergirl, so that might make this choice unlikely.

Daniel Gillies
If anyone has seen the Vampire Diaries and/or The Originals, then you'll probably be able to understand why I've chosen Gillies. He is very "typical" of the Doctor in my mind, he's posh as hell, which I think would be a great fit the show (we need a handsome and posh Doctor one day, right?). He'd probably be most reminiscent of Paul McGann, maybe a tiny bit of David Tennant in terms of getting fangirls to love him, I think he'd be a fantastic fit for the show.

Damien Molony
I think I have a penchant for casting vampires in everything...If you've seen the last few seasons of the British Being Human, again you'll likely understand why I've chosen Molony, for pretty similar reasons as to why I've cast Gillies. Molony was one of my first choices to be the next Doctor after Matt Smith left the show, but this time my preference would be towards Gillies out of the vampires I've cast...but I'd still be extremely happy if Molony got cast. Again like Gillies I think he'd be most reminiscent of Paul McGann, but I could easily see some Peter Davison and Christopher Eccleston mixed in there too.

Ben Daniels
One of the most rumoured choices for the Doctor last time around, after seeing him in the Exorcist (albeit for only one episode; I gave up after that), I thought he'd be an ideal choice for the Doctor. He has the right presence for it, I could easily see him portraying a dark, stern Doctor, which again is basically what I'm looking for. He'd likely be reminiscent of Christopher Eccleston (you can probably see a theme in my choices by now) and would bring a great gravitas to the show.

Tom Felton
When I saw him in The Flash, I instantly thought he was just right for the Doctor. He's also my mum's top choice. He has the quirkiness and eccentricity to pull of a great Doctor, he'd fit the role like a glove. He has the ideal combination of seriousness and charm to pull it off well, I could see him being quite sarcastic at times like Colin Baker or early Peter Capaidli. On top of this he's also posh, which as I've said earlier is something I'd love to see in a Doctor.

Danny Dyer
Just imagine it, Danny Dyer shouting "fuck off you tin cunts" at a bunch of Daleks. Wouldn't that be glorious? Ok in all seriousness though, if Danny Dyer can avoid swearing constantly in Eastenders, it's not impossible for him to do the same in Doctor Who. I think he'd be a breath of fresh air; I'd love a cockney Doctor, he could be quintessentially British in a whole new way for the show. It'd take the show in an entirely new direction, and I could see Dyer being a truly unique Doctor, he'd perhaps have the urbanness of Eccleston, whilst his lighter moments would be reminiscent of both Bakers and Tennant. Unlikely to be chosen, but I think it's be brilliant if he was...there'd be no objections from me, and you just know the ratings would go straight up, at least for his premiere, plus I could imagine he'd keep ratings high. Maybe it isn't out of the question after all...

So these are some of my top picks. As you can gather from this, my main preference would be a return to a more serious tone to the show, and with either a posh or an urban Doctor. Some honourable mentions include Nigel Havers (which I touted last time) but I don't think he'd be able to keep the show going, plus I think after Capaldi it'd be refreshing to have a slightly younger Doctor again, and Jason Flemyng which I also touted last time, but I think he'd be more of a comedic Doctor, being similar to Tom Baker or Patrick Troughton, but that's not really the direction I want the show to take at the moment, although I'd still be perfectly happy if either of these options were cast.

As for all the Eva Green suggestions, I think she'd be a better fit as a villain, or a mysterious companion....perhaps as the next Master/Missy, although I've not been too keen on Missy and would prefer a return to a more traditional Master, I think Green would pull off Missy well enough to warrant a second female Master.

Seriously anyone who thinks Danny Dyer is a better fit to be the Doctor than Olivia Colman really ought to hand in their sonic screwdriver.

Olivia Colman is an award winning actress who can play battered wives, scatty bohemians, determined human rights activists and Numberwang contestants, she's quirky and funny and lovely and can also be dark and venomously nasty (just watch Peep Show). She's about as qualified as anyone has ever been to play the Doctor, aside from the apparently irreconcilable complication that she doesn't have a dick!

I REALLY want to see Mcgann get a proper series as the Doctor! Love to see Eddie Raymere but I'm sure he will be to tied up with films like the Fantastic Beasts sequels etc.

That was mostly more of a jokey suggestion, but I'd still choose Dyer over Colman; Dyer has shown he can "calm down" for Eastenders, a cockney Doctor would be fun, it'd be unique to the show. So him portraying the Doctor wouldn't be out of the equation, difficult to imagine perhaps but I could see it working. I would choose my five other suggestions over Dyer mind you.

As for Colman, there's no denying she's a good actress, a versatile one. But I still can't see her as the Doctor. I could be proven wrong; I was extremely dismayed when Capaldi was cast and extremely optimistic when Smith was cast, and as it turns out I was overall impressed and surprised with Capaldi, whilst utterly disappointed with Smith. However as it stands, I simply struggle to see Colman in the role. Plus she's what a lot of people are expecting, well people on the female doctor bandwagon anyway, I'd rather have more of a surprise when the Doctor's cast, a lesser known cast. Even if a female Doctor was cast, Colman would still not be my choice.

Lance Parkin made an intriguing suggestion on Facebook -- Jessica Raine. I hadn't considered her, but she'd be quite brilliant. And why he'd choose her over Olivia Colman:

I think if there's to be a woman in the role, someone like Olivia Colman would represent the sort of Alan Davies paradox of being too obvious for the role ... and for Doctor Who as it was, not the sort of Doctor Who where Matt Smith's played the role. The casting of the Doctor should feel a little dangerous, and 'casting a woman' isn't dangerous in and of itself, it's a sort of pseudo danger, a sort of superficial 'risk'. A safe woman choice is still a safe choice. Colman would be great, but I think I see how she'd play it. In, - er, how can I put this diplomatically? - an era overseen by a safe choice showrunner ... yes, that might trick people into thinking I'm being positive ... a safe choice Doctor would drag everything to a halt. In things like Line of Duty and Inside No 9, Jessica Raine's got a nice, arch, aware thing going on. She makes slightly mad choices that liven up the performance.

Hmm. That would work for me. I'd forgotten she'd appeared in the episode Hide, but I did like her in An Adventure in Space and Time as Verity Lambert. Her time on Line of Duty was way too short though.
