New Voyages/Phase II Appreciation Thread

Man, Ralph, thanks for posting the stuff you have on youtube. Wish I could be there seeing the stuff you see and talking to these people. Atleast I can get a taste of it from your videos........

Luckily I live in MA and have been up a couple times to see NV/P2 in action, amazing stuff and a great crew! You too Ralph! :)

ok so ive just been watching some of the fanfilms, was disappointed with "Of Gods & Men" setting it in an alt timeline, seemed to render the whole thing a bit pointless, & Walter Koenig toasting to another 40 years seemed hollow, 40 years of what, FanFilms? meanwhile Nichelle Nichols just seemed to old for all of it. I thought Tim Russ put in a decent performance as Tuvok, however maybe that was simply down to him having aged less.

moving on I started watching a Starship Farragut: The Animated Episodes, but it just awful, so I gave up. (sorry)

so I just went to what seems to the No1 FanFilm series "Star Trek: Phase II", and watched To serve all my Days.

Walter Koenig was on much better form in this one, he seemed alot more into it, which was not always the case with "Of Gods & Men" I am surprised we didnt seen him share more screen time with the ambassador who knew his grand farther, production wise its pretty good, the Klingon ship is awesome, much better even than the Enterprise, but even the Enterprise outshines the one in TOS, just goes to show how far things have advanced since the 60s.

Actually Andy Bray seemed to be really good casting as Chekov, maybe its the episode I was watching, but he was maybe the one actor who I thought, they really cast the role well. Uhura seemed a bit young, however there Sulu is more of a likeness for the Trek XI Sulu than the TOS Sulu. The parts where the older Sulu was talking to the younger Sulu was excellent.

Anyways im being picky, and overly critical for no good reason, I mostly enjoyed it, was a bit surprised to see (or at least have it heavily hinted at) Chekov die at the end yet he seems to be in future episodes, I thought this series were meant to continue on from each other like a series, and looking it up it appears Chekov does return, very strange.

Ill probaly watch World Enough and Time and then back track to the previous episodes.

Wamdue, as somebody enjoying fan films (I haven't watched animated Farragut yet, and found STOGAM enjoyable) I found your more critical view interesting. I have tried to show fan films to friends, and they, like you, have largely not liked them. I created a blog for those, who, like me, are new to fan films (my signature is the link). Originally, I thought the blog would mostly be about reviews, but so far it's mostly just about finding the films and linking to them, since the world of Star Trek Fan Films proved to be much larger than I initially imagined.

I was about to give up on showing them to my friends. I'm thinking maybe I'll try a LATER episode of Phase II, since their reaction to the pilot was also very bad.

Thanks for the input.

it should be noted that im not really a big fan of recasts (infact I hate recasts) that is really like I started with "Of Gods and Men" which features a fair amount of TV series actors, but fails to deliver plot wise. I would say that the use of Captain Harriman seemed odd he was not that bigger part of Star Trek, and I certainly dont ever recall thinking, I wonder what he would be like in a alt timeline, which is kinda similar to the Mirror verse.

I guess it can be best summed up as, if you can get actors from the TV series in your FanFilm, have them play their characters, Walter Koenig is not playing Chekov for most of the OGaM.

meanwhile Phase II, Koenig puts in a much better performance, the writing & plot etc is far better, and I honestly did like the guy who played the younger Chekov.

I think its always going to be better to start people off with the FanFilms that feature actors from the TV series, its a good hook.

im too much of critic for my own good sometimes

Re: Captain Harriman, It was orginally planned to be Sulu, Chekov and Uhura but George was unavailable for the shoot and Alan Ruck was available so Harriman was brought back. And so re-writes had to be done, so if it feels out place with him that is why. There was also to be some other extra stuff planned with guest actors that never made it to the final product.

What's some of that extra stuff?

A workable script, perhaps?

have now seen "World Enough & Time" forgot to post a mini review

ok World Enough & Time, if there is ever an argument as to if FanFilms can ever add anything to a franchise, this episode maybe the answer to that question.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Takei

George Takei and whoever it is who plays Alana Sulu puts in a stunning performance, with a script so breathtaking, tragic and heartbreaking (ok those last two things are possibly the same thing) that you are so engrossed you just dont care about the fact that anyone has been recast.

I do not know where this script came from, but if the TV series had, had any like it, it might have lasted more than 3 seasons.

The framing of the USS Excelsior is both good & bad, good for the fact that you get to see Captain Sulu, and bad for the fact you get to see a teaser of what a Captain Sulu / USS Excelsior might have been like, is it possible George Takei could do a couple of "USS Excelsior" FanFilms produced by some of the people involved with Star Trek Phase 2?

Kirks attempt to flirt with Alana marks the first time you see any of the TV series in World Enough & Time, and im not totally convinced its better for it, his antics seem cornball compared to what else is happening.

George Takei and the actress playing Alana act everybody else off the screen, and all the other character pale in significance, and unimportance to this storyline.

I realise its unfair of me to ask George Takei to make a Captain Sulu / USS Excelsior FanFlm, but like the end of Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, this leaves me (& I assume the rest of the audience) wanting to see one.

one last quick note, the CGI for this series is far to good, if they aim is to make S4 then they dont need to try so hard, the CGI around Alana Sulu is a brilliant example of this.

As we put finishing touches on the special effects for "Blood and Fire, Part 2," we're still looking good for a release sometime around Labor Day--about a month away. A lot of our team will be busy at Dragon*Con that Labor Day weekend, so we probably won't release it the very same time most of us are out of town unable to deal with technical issues if they crop up. But it'll probably be released shortly after that.

Also, a pretty-well completed version of "The Child" will be shown at Dragon*Con even though we shot "Enemy: Starfleet" before "The Child." Jit's just one of those odd things that "The Child" is nearing the finish line sooner than "Enemy: Starfleet" is. But like I think I've mentioned, we'd probably hold off releasing our follow-up episode to "Blood and Fire, Part 2" for a couple of months to allow the smoke to clear a bit. So that lag time might be enough time to get "Enemy: Starfleet" finished which would permit us to release the episodes in their actual production order.

And there is, of course, great overlap between our Phase II team and our Buck Rogers Begins team, and we are all hard at work getting ready to start shooting our first Buck Rogers segments in a month or so. Buck is shaping up to be a fun production.

Thanks for the nice comments about our productions. The nice comments are pretty much why we do the episodes. It's not like we can make a dime off the Paramount/CBS property that we have no rights to whatsoever, so its the nice comments and pats on the back (and things like Hugo Award nominations and our ever-increasing viewership numbers) that keep us going when our team starts running out of steam a bit.

Greg,

Before I saw this thread I posted a thread with a link to some photos here:
http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=103991
I wondered if you might shed some insight on who those people are on the set.
Thanks,
Larry

From what I have seen its extremely well made and edited. Definitely captires the feel of the original series. Its amazing how good it looks on screen. The main criticism I have is that its hard to navigate to where you download the episodes. Lotsof links to mirror sites pop up. I had no idea what a mirror was and it confused me.

I've just downloaded the episode with the original Mr Sulu. It opened up as DVD split files. I am not a dvd technician, I don't know what I'm meant to do with those type of files. They won't play on my pc. I find it strange that the episodes are not easily accessible. I would have thought it good practice to have instructions for download on the site. I can't see any. http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/episode_weat.html
I'm very disappionted after having waited for this download :-(

Thanks hun thats very kind of you. MWV or AVI are great. I'll message you tomorrow . I'm just off to bed xxxx

Hi Barbreader.

Thanks a lot for those instructions. I ended up watching the World Enough and Time episode streaming but I'm downloading the others.

This series is outstanding. So much is the same as the original series but so much is different. It makes me appreciate the way new film went in starting from scratch. It is a difficult thing to recreate Star trek. JJ Abrams took the easy way though!

This show was produced so expertly I could definitely see it working on TV. I had watched part of this episode a few years ago and I lost interest. But I think thats because I wasn't really a great original crew fan apart from the movies (even though I watched it in the 80s as a child)

About a ago I suddenly got interested in the original series and now love the charm and originality of it. As good as later shows are they do owe it all to Star trek. So with new enthusiam I watched this episode and it was absolutely amazing.

The story was solid and had a strong sci fi plot and a great character story. The way they brought George Takei back was ingenious. The sets were painstakingly recreated to perfection. Although- and this sin't a critcism - it was strange to see everything so crisp with the modern day filming techniques.

I like the actors. Alana really shined in this. I'm not sure what to make of Scotty, he hasn't got the best scotts accent. I know how hard it is having tried it myself for my own fan production. I think he spoke the lines a little fast in places due to nerves, but he still came across as Scotty and looked the part.

The effects were exceptional and even stand up against some CGI I have seen in blockbusters.

A couple of things that really stood out as not being realistic was Alana's first kiss was halted and she didnt seem that bothered. A first kiss for anyone is a big thing and even more so when you have no peers around to share one with.

I dont understan why the camera moves quite jolty following Kirk on the bridge- like BSG does- and then cuts to a static camera on the crew stations. It doesnt flow.

Apart from those small points this was a thoroughly entertaining and charming nod to the old but with a flare for the new. Well done to all involved. I am going to watch Blood and Fire the trailer looked too cool!
