New uniform

I don't think these are Starfleet issue uniforms. They seem specifically for the Yorktown people. Aside from the odd uniform Kirk was in on the Boutella planet and the grey formal suit in the Yorktown "commander's" office, it's pretty much standard the standard gold/blue/red tunics.

I assume by "braces" he meant "suspenders".

It looks like the costumer has nudged the intensity and tone of the three colors a little more toward the TNG era - a less-bright gold (closer to TOS, really), colder red and slightly greener blue.

Suspenders are an old military trick to express your individuality while wearing a uniform :)

I wonder if the uniforms are specific to starbase personnel or this specific location, but still Starfleet. Though, it looks like both patches on the sleeves are Yorktown specific.

I guessed I missed something then. Is the Yorktown not a Starfleet vessel?

In the Prime-universe, it was one of the original 13 Connie's back in the day and the originally proposed main ship's name before Roddenberry changed it to Enterprise.

I wonder if they'll pick NCC-1704 or NCC-1717?

It's hard to say for sure, given the quality of the photos, the lighting, and all, but I'd tend to agree with your observations about the extras' gray uniforms.

That said, I thought the red uniform worn by Pegg and blue one worn by Quinto were actually deeper, richer shades of the colors than they were on TOS.

While we haven't seen Pine in command gold yet, in the crowd shots, the command gold duty uniforms actually reminded me of the tannish tunics worn in the pilots. It's definitely a more subdued shade of gold. Then again, there's the quality of the photo and lighting to consider and all.

It is funny that they shied away from using those colors for the predominant uniform colors on TMP because they thought they'd look garish or comic-bookish on the big screen.

Well, you know the old saying:
"The costumer is always right."

Er....wait....what?

:D

I mis-spoke. The Yorktown folk are certainly Starfleet. Their uniforms, however, are specific to them. There are no similar uniforms with an "Enterprise" patch, for example.

In fact, one has to wonder why they get different uniforms at all. Does each ship have their own tailor? We've never actually seen a crew from another standard SF ship. In ST'09, we only see the cadets going off to their assignments. Maybe the tunics are specific to Enterprise?

And it will be in this film too.

I like the new standard duty uniforms. I never did like those jerseys. The new ones have a TNG feel to them with the shoulder pads.

starbuck: in the future, please use an image-sharing service to host pics. It's bad form to use a news site's bandwidth to embed their images on another website. I've converted these to links.

Also: Please don't use three posts to post two images. Triple-posting is a no-no anyway.

Aargh! Kirk didn't say "There are twelve others like it in the fleet." He said "There are only twelve like it in the fleet." This latter turn of phrase means "This one and eleven more besides" in most English speaking countries, and always has. Am I the only one that knows this anymore?

He also didn't said only. He only said 'There's twelve like her in the fleet''.
Never mind, You're right, I went and look at the script. And he does said what you've said what he said.

He did say "only". From the episode transcript:
CHRISTOPHER: Must have taken quite a lot to build a ship like this.
KIRK: There are only twelve like it in the fleet.

Okay, please chill with the pedantic attempt at thread derailment. I was one off in my recollection of the number in the dialog. Not the end of the universe, for fuck's sake!

Hear hear, Gebirg!!!
I make plenty of errors. Anybody see me slapping folk around for them making theirs?

Seriously, the superiority complexes have to go!
